Nice stuff in matalan!

Spent the morning looking for summer dresses. Very limited here but tried Next, H&M, sainsburys and Asda. All awful. Could have cried at one point, I had a moment of 'who the hell even am I?!' when I saw myself in yet another terrible dress.

Anyway, I hit the jackpot in matalan. So many lovely dresses. Great colours, nice fit, bra friendly. Bought 5 and even better they were all half price!

They used to be brilliant, Then went 'off'. Then ordinary.
Like M&S only more so. IMO
But time to give them another go is it?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/06/2023 07:33

I hadn’t been for years, went recently and couldn’t believe how tatty and dowdy it all was. Couldn’t find a single thing to even try on and I used to often find stuff there. I must’ve caught it at a bad moment.

prampushingdownthehighst · 12/06/2023 08:35

Quite a few years ago now, I had to dress smartly for work and I bought a lot of trouser/shirt/jacket combinations from Matalan, good quality and washed well.
I went back a few years later and liked nothing, so maybe it's time for another visit, thank you for the heads up!

I’m currently wearing a pair of these shorts. https://www.matalan.co.uk/clothing/stone-button-denim-shorts/14543866.html. Honestly, they’re great. Comfy, flattering, wash well. Will be my staples for the summer.

I also rate their swimwear - bra sized bikini tops that I pair with decathlon board shorts.

It’s 95% synthetic dross, but what’s good is good.

I went the other day and was disappointed. So many things looked OK at a distance, but the quality was awful. Everything looked so cheap and badly made. Supermarkets do so much better at the same price point.

Or spend only slightly more at somewhere like M&S and the quality is streets ahead.

FedUpFanAnn · 12/06/2023 11:52

Little shout out for Morrisons. I've picked up a few surprisingly good tops in there when only intending to go for a pork pie.

AliceMcK · 12/06/2023 12:30

Love Matalan, I’ve just bought some nice bits. I struggle with shoes, I hate hate hate trying shoes on and buying shoes but I bought a pair of summer sandals which I never wear, but they have been very comfortable wearing.

I wear a lot of their blouses in winter, I’m big boobed and I find they hang just right and very comfortable without the buttons popping open.

Also get some nice bits for the DCs.

touchemachere · 12/06/2023 13:10

Drop down 1 or even 2 sizes

Am I the only one who's had the opposite experience? I haven't shopped there in years but I remember buying something in my usual size and finding it too small - put me off Matalan as it made me feel fatter!

WimbyAce · 12/06/2023 13:28

Yes I have got some lovely dresses in there recently, all in sale.

WimbyAce · 12/06/2023 13:29

There was a lovely summer dress in there recently but I waited too long and they'd all gone.

WimbyAce · 12/06/2023 13:30

Last post meant to be quoting the morrisons one!

SquashPenguin · 12/06/2023 13:37

Went in the other day, it was all awful. Couldn’t find anything that wasn’t frumpy. Not going back again any time soon.

Today I'm wearing waist 32" men's Drawcord Chino shorts, in khaki. Bought for adult son last year but he needed the next size up so I kept them for me. Well cut, quality is great, good weight cotton with 2% stretch and wash well. Two decent sized side pockets and a button down back pocket. Might have a pair in the sage green or rust colour, this year:

I was shocked the other day when I went in (haven’t been for well over 15 years). Lots that was decent quality, and really cheap! Their beach towels are really great, and about £7 or £8

fionaapple · 12/06/2023 19:08

Most of my work clothes are from there. Great for summer and winter. And the mom jeans from the petite section are the only jeans that I can achieve the slightly cropped mom jean look with, being 4'11. So comfy and light - I hope they bring out more colours. The sandals are really comfy too - I'm quite fussy after being left with scars from cheap sandal straps cutting into my feet a couple of years ago. Even my pool cover up for my holiday last year was from there. I almost always hit the jackpot in the sales.

I tried this on the other day after eyeing it up when it wasn't in the sale. Unfortunately wasn't for me but lovely quality nevertheless.

SusieKin · 12/06/2023 19:22

I agree. Don’t normally shop at Matalan for clothes but went in looking for luggage and found some really nice summer clothes.

All shops occasionally have something which is perfect. My mum made me go in Bon Marche and I found some perfect long, plain jumper dresses in nice colours - no frills or cheap ugly sewn on bits, like M&S had a habit of doing at the time. They've washed and worn well and I can still use them. Never seen anything in there before or since.
I've also bought things in Primark or Tesco for the kids that survived years and were good enough to be passed down. And other, more expensive things that have bobbled and disintegrated really quickly. It's all luck of the draw I think.

Nailed it.

Mykittensmittens · 12/06/2023 22:48

I wondered if there would be a thread about this as I’ve not shopped in there for years but this year I’ve had some absolutely brilliant bargains.

I’ve had three linen blend shirts - one in a stone stripe, a white and a coral one. They have a lovely cut to the neckline and look good over shorts and a vest or trousers and a vest. They were something like £17 each but I got another 20% off and 4% cash back with quidco. I would easily say they look like triple that cost - they are really nice quqlityZ

I've also had some patterned linen blend cropped trousers which look like £40+ fat face ones - not cropped on me as I’m 5-2 but a perfect ankle length.

camisole tops which have a crochet panel at the top, great under the above shirts, and if I’m on online work calls they don’t look too low cut like a normal vest can.

DD has had a really good teen bikini which is sized well and covers nicely, and some T-shirts and shorts.

all the above I got 20% off with a code, another 4% cash back with quidco and free delivery!

Mykittensmittens · 12/06/2023 22:49

*quality!

MerylSqueak · 12/06/2023 22:49

My colleague was wearing this today and it looked ace.

I got a really nice blue cotton embroidered maxi dress their recently but it's out of stock now. I love it

Nice stuff in matalan!
