Hats to wear about town

I’ve never been a hat wearer but my scalp is beginning to burn in this sunny spell we are having! Can you please spam me with what you are wearing on your head? 😁

I need something practical to wear while pushing a pram, going to the shops, baby classes etc. it would be good if people could post actual links of stuff rather than just say ‘wear a cap’ 😂 I want to know exactly what people are wearing as I never see any women wearing hats wear I live!

I have an Other Stories fedora from about 10 years ago, they have some nice things like this at the moment www.stories.com/en_gbp/accessories/headwear/hats/product.ribbon-brim-straw-hat-beige.1158240001.html

Bucket hats seem to be popular (maybe due to Welsh football?!) but they will always make me think of when Perry comes back from his trip to Manchester in Kevin & Perry. Alright Mrs Paterson.

Ooh I really like that fedora but I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep it on my head. I live in a seaside town north of the country so it’s quite a breezy place! Maybe they do stay on, my knowledge on hats is non existent 🤔

Yes, a bucket hat would make me think of the same thing 😂😂😂

Maybe I do need a baseball hat that doesn’t look like a delivery driver sort of hat. One I can wear with dresses, but I don’t think they exist!

Accessorize - £25 straw hat with and adju inside rim so it bloody fits and doesn't fly off!

I have a similar problem, very early macro degeneration, need to keep sun out of my eyes so wear a hat with a brim but don't want to look like a van driver either. Sun hats are ok but not in a breeze. Also 5ft 2ins and don't want to look like a mushroom🍄. Baker boy hats are not too bad but often I get dressed and look ok until I put my cap or hat on

SocksAndTheCity · 05/06/2023 18:49

I often wear a headscarf (I have some pretty Liberty ones) now it's a bit warm for a woolly hat, but this last couple of weeks I've been wearing my elderly Stussy bucket hat, so I am no help at all 😀🤣

Love this! Would it stay on if it’s breezy outside or if I took a walk to the (windy) beach near my house? 😁

I wear a battered old stetson from Fat Face (it really is battered but I love that), havent found a replacement yet.

Fat Face usually have a good selection of hats. This is just one

This is lovely but I fear it’s not going to stay on if it’s breezy outside? I’m sure the neighbours would love to see me chasing my hat while pushing a pram 🤣

This is the kind of hat I like too. But I'm also partial to a baseball cap when I'm looking 'sporty'

ThroughTheAppleOrchard · 06/06/2023 10:24

Muji hats are adjustable so could conceivably stand up to the wind. Only one of these has an actual chin strap though. https://www.muji.eu/uk/women/women-hats

This summer I’m wearing a £3 baseball cap from Primark, looks fine and hasn’t blown off yet!

This one is nice although it’s a men’s hat so I assume will be too big for my little head!

I got a Wallaroo hat last year after doing a lot of research, it’s brilliant and folds up so you can bring it around in your bag.

3luckystars · 06/06/2023 23:30

Re the Wallaroo hat,I think it was the Sydney hat I bought in the end but will have to check that. I watched loads of videos and thought the fact that it folds up was a real bonus.
i have had straw hats before and trying to hawk them around the place was awkward and once you pack them, they are no more good. You can bring this one around in your bag with you.

Ooh I like the sound of a folding one. I’ll have a look!

Thanks, @3luckystars.

I've just ordered a foldable Wallaroo Scrunchie, in the natural colour. I especially like the fact it's SPF50+ and wide brim. The Aussies know what they're doing.

Has an adjustable drawstring. Hooray.

I don't have much joy with sunhats. It's a shame, but my lovely natural straw Monsoon cowboy hat of 8 years is a little too large, blows off in the slightest gust.

And last year's, from Village Hats, which does fit nicely, has a higher dome: a bloody comedian van driver shouted "Oy, Pharrell!" at me! <blush>

In case anyone else is interested:

They do a petite size as well.

I love that one, all the best with it! I got very badly burnt on my neck last year, I am usually very careful but got caught outside in the blazing sun and I promised that would never happen me again. There’s no point thinking I’ll carry a hat around the place under my arm just in case, but this one is in my bag ready so I’m sorted. I’m now eyeing up a second one. The Casual Traveller.

Stitch on some elastic to go under your jaw

Stitch on some elastic to go under your jaw

Or, to do it a more elegant way, use proper hat elastic, and sew it to the hatband so you can put it behind your ears and under your hair at the back - invisible like that.
