Nail varnish virgin, what do I buy??

Never really used nail varnish, I have toe nails for the first time in my life. I would like a azure blue, metallic, maybe two tone. I don’t want to buy a cheap one, or lots of mistakes. What are good brands to buy? Any recommendations?

I find easier good and doesn't chip as fast as some other brands

Catchasingmewithspiders · 29/05/2023 22:39

should say Essie sorry stupid autocorrect

EversoDisorganised · 29/05/2023 22:41

Sometimes cheap ones are the best to be honest, Barry M have a good range of two tone types usually. I’d go for a browse in a large branch of Superdrug. You will also need a basecoat (any brand) and a topcoat - for this I recommend either Seche Vite or Sally Hansen Insta-dry as they both dry super fast. I think Superdrug sell both, Boots do. And some remover for when you want to change it.

Chanel! It lasts for ever, goes on beautifully and looks professional. A foamy thing to separate the toes is good too.

SocksAndTheCity · 29/05/2023 22:53

Essie Aruba Blue is a favourite of mine, although it's more (shimmery) cobalt than azure Smile

TokyoSushi · 29/05/2023 22:57

Essie is really lovely nail varnish and they have great colours. They do mini versions in Superdrug which are £3.99 if that's helpful. Even better if you can find 'Expressie' - dries in 60 seconds!

ceepeeree · 29/05/2023 23:00

Essie gel couture is great. It's two steps: (1) colour & (2) topcoat.
Brush is good so it goes on smoothly and easily. Finish is excellent and it's long lasting.
I've tried lots- highly recommend this.

Comefromaway · 29/05/2023 23:08

I like Essie

i bought Sally Hanson quick dry for the first time on Saturday and was not impressed. Pools, is very uneven going on and look at it already after I only put it on yesterday

Essie is the best by far, lovely colours, doesn’t chip and reasonably priced.

Justkoko · 30/05/2023 12:58

Essie is great, try you do blue, its a little but two tone hyacinth blue and lilac. Very pretty and summery

SirenSays · 30/05/2023 13:18

I've tried hundreds and hands down rimmel topcoats are the best I've ever tried.

tobee · 30/05/2023 17:23

I always find Chanel sadly disappointing.

I like Nails Inc, Opi, Barry M, Nail berry as well as Essie.

I've got these recently but they need a few coats. They change colour according to temperature apparently. I use Nails Inc base and top coat too and they are good to stop chipping

Actually, I've currently got Santorini by Nailberry on: (slightly chipped now!)

Slightly more turquoise irl

Lilliflip · 30/05/2023 17:34

I’ve got a bit of a nail varnish obsession and got 50+ bottles. I’ve tried most things from expensive to very cheap. I find rimmel, Barry M & Essie the best.

Sarvanga38 · 30/05/2023 17:35

I'm an Opi fan - loads of colours, goes on well and lasts.

(Am amazed to hear anyone recommend Chanel - like a PP, have always found it absolutely useless.)

Inadvertentlyspring · 30/05/2023 17:41

Another vote for Rimmel

HippyChickMama · 30/05/2023 17:42

I do my own gel manicures and pedicures but if I don't have time I really like the Rimmel 60 Second polishes. They go on well and dry really quickly. They don't last brilliantly but a clear top coat helps

SourDoughToast · 30/05/2023 17:42

Another vote for Essie gel couture- I've tried loads of different brands and this one stays on the longest by a mile.

BriarHare · 30/05/2023 17:45

Essie is the best and they do lovely blues. I have a somewhat embarrassing number of Essie nail varnishes.

Jessica and OPI are ok but don’t last as well.

Thetowelsareallwrong · 30/05/2023 17:46

Nailberry is lovely but my last one, green something, is chipping and peeling off really quickly despite buying their topcoat grr...

SocksAndTheCity · 30/05/2023 18:07

Nailberry is my favourite too (especially the pink base coat), but I love Essie for the colour choice. My favourite topcoat is Plumpy by Barry M.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 30/05/2023 19:26

I love OPI Infinite Shine; when I use the base and top coats it lasts around two weeks.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 30/05/2023 19:30

I have a huge nail varnish collection, and like PPs I think Essie is good, and has a big range of colours. My new favourite, however, is Zoya, which I buy from here -https://www.nailpolishdirect.co.uk/zoya-m82 It lasts a good week on me.

I must be the only one who’s not a fan of Essie! I mean, it’s ok but I’ve not found it long lasting. My favourite is Jessica and second Nailberry.
