So where do older 5ft ladies buy everyday summer dresses?

Wandered round a London mall today, and have to say I'm not impressed. M&S offering far too long, or high necks. Primark, slightly young in style.

Just want a couple of cheap day to day dresses to take me through summer. I'm just over 5ft. Where are you all heading? Perhaps High Street isn't for me, anymore.

I get mine from seasalt. M&S isn't good for short people. You could try fat face too.

Niftythrifter · 27/05/2023 18:35

New Look are worth a look!

whirlyhead · 27/05/2023 18:37

Hush. Good range of dresses and easy to send back.

i still don’t feel old enough to buy m&s clothes!

WellTidy · 27/05/2023 18:40

I’m mid 40s, 5 foot 1, apple shape (at the moment). Size 12-14.

Ive bought loads of dresses recently from M&s online, in petite fit. If you search ‘petite’ you get a load of results, including short length jeans, but there are lots of petite fit dresses and tops.

white stuff, seasalt and Boden do decent petite fit dresses. Sainsburys too (but they don’t have much choice right now).

LittleMachine · 27/05/2023 18:40

I'm not sure what you mean by older but I'm around the 5 foot mark and get lots of my summer dresses from Dorothy Perkins petite range online. I reckon all the ones I have could be worn by any age - I'm 37.

fuckmyuteruslining · 27/05/2023 18:42

Seasalt

Magenta82 · 27/05/2023 18:43

Fatface

MissAtomicBomb1 · 27/05/2023 20:55

Next
Zara's shirt dresses are great too

To the poster that says they're too young for M&S, I think they've really upped their game the last yr or two. Not a fan of the floral midis though, I find them frumpy.

ThirstyThursday · 27/05/2023 20:58

I'm just under 5ft, but I don't buy dresses as I look like a bloody lamp shade. I'm more 'watermelon' than apple. 🥲

Nebulosity · 27/05/2023 21:04

I’m 5ft and living in my And/Or dresses from John Lewis - got a plain khaki green cotton tiered dress last year and the same one in black this year and they’re endlessly useful and comfortable.

Augend23 · 27/05/2023 21:06

I'm struggling with dresses this year as all the "midi" ones fall at a really weird height. Thankfully I got a few last year so I should be okay.

Not that that helps you, but you aren't alone!

unicornsinspace · 27/05/2023 21:11

5'2 and I find fatface and M&S are good

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 27/05/2023 21:36

Next online mainly as they do other brands too- although I have my eye on one at Hush .

MedievalMadness · 27/05/2023 21:42

5' and 62 and have decided dresses don't do a thing for me. But the nearest I got was an And/Or tiered dress last year (sold it on eBay) and actually looked ok. I just didn't feel like 'me' in it. It sounds like the one Nebulosity has only I had it in black. Would def try And/Or .

continentallentil · 27/05/2023 22:58

You will get much more choice online, there is generally so little on the high street for practically everyone.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 28/05/2023 06:45

Mistral

divingworldchampion · 28/05/2023 08:01

I'm 5'2 and size 12-14 and I find Mango really good for my shape. Just bought these and happy with both.

Jolie Moi. If you are willing to spend a bit.

LadyKenya · 28/05/2023 08:36

All of my dresses come from M&S. I get the short length.

Paq · 28/05/2023 08:40

I'm bemused by the Fat Face / White Stuff / Mistral recommendations. I find all their stuff is for much taller women.

My go to is vinted and a great seamstress who takes up hems! But I live rurally so don't have access to many IRL shops.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 28/05/2023 08:41

I usually like the Petite Linen dresses from Next but I don't know who has chosen the prints this year, they're awful!

jackstini · 28/05/2023 08:45

Everything5pounds.com

Huge selection, a lot of branded (not that you know the brand until you get it!) and all the pictures state the size and height of the model which really helps

Also gives the fabric content

I usually buy around 10 items and end up keeping 7/8 and donating others to charity

Best bargain so far was an ASOS dress tagged at £70 for £5.75

happyinherts · 28/05/2023 09:27

Thanks, Ladies

SeaSalt / Fat Face still look a bit long, but Sainsbury's seems worth a look and Everything5pounds.com, although I do like to see fabrics before buying.

High Street purchasing options aren't great, are they? Unfortunately, we're being pushed online whether we like it or not.
