So where do older 5ft ladies buy everyday summer dresses?

Wandered round a London mall today, and have to say I'm not impressed. M&S offering far too long, or high necks. Primark, slightly young in style.

Just want a couple of cheap day to day dresses to take me through summer. I'm just over 5ft. Where are you all heading? Perhaps High Street isn't for me, anymore.

I got a couple of nice inexpensive dresses last year from Next petite. I look terrible in anything on/above the knee though, so you might find them too long.

I’m 4’11 and Seasalt petite is good for me. Maybe mainly online? There isn’t a Seasalt shop near me, so not sure if they have lots of petite fit in the shops. Also some Fatface- I don’t find the Simone style too long. The full length ones look awful on me, even in short length though.

I’m 5ft and living in my And/Or dresses from John Lewis - got a plain khaki green cotton tiered dress last year and the same one in black this year and they’re endlessly useful and comfortable.

Thanks for this recommendation - I hadn't heard of this make before . I like the look of their plain cotton jersey dresses (possibly the one you have ) .

Boden do a petite range and some of their more 'staid' dresses are similar to Seasalt.

The other option is to have dresses shortened. I've bought a couple from John Lewis (they might be their And/Or range) and got busy with my needle and thread!

Very little petite on the shelves in Seasalt shops. Much better going online.

I find their dresses cut tight across the shoulders and back so stick to their stretchy fabrics.

I’m 5’1 and this year I love…

And/Or tiered dresses
Fatface Navi dress
Hush Elisa dress

I mostly pair dresses with wedges. A bit of height and the better posture heels gives me (pulls in your tummy slightly and shoulders back a bit) feels better to me than flats.

Hobbs Petite

Weird fish. Good quality cotton, doing good introductory offers right now. I picked up three really good dresses yesterday for £90.

I know from experience they will last two years with a lot of wear. So I think that's good value.

BrunchMonster · 28/05/2023 13:14

I was about to say Weird Fish. . They have some nice dresses but I couldn't wear them as too short for me (and I'm only 5'5")

I buy Nobody's Child Petite, ASOS Petite, M&S petite or short length, new Look Petite...obviously I have to choose carefully because not everything looks good on someone in their 50s. These are also affordable brands. Seasalt is lovely but a bit too pricey. Sometimes buy Boden if heavily reduced or on Vinted.

Toddlerone · 28/05/2023 13:44

Boden petite and Hush mostly.

DelphiniumBlue · 28/05/2023 13:56

I'm taller than some of you at 5'3 but came on to say that I find Seasalt is designed for tall, broad-shouldered shield maidens !

Random small boutiques and department store concessions full of labels I've never heard of. I always find so much nicer stuff in there than the main chain shops!
