Late September wedding, Aunt of the Bride

I'm stuck between these three, and then how to style then. Registry office wedding, restaurant meal then party.
I'm size 22 so appreciate it's harder to make it look good, and I have fish ankles so can't do heels, the pink show also comes in navy and will probably be my blue option.

Any ideas? Are they all terrible and I'll just look a state?

I think the berry coloured maxi dress (option 1) is the most flattering. It might just be the angle, but the plain navy maxi dress looks rather unflattering (sorry!) and the patterned/navy trim looks fussy.

With a maxi, you can get away with most shoes/sandals (the ones you're wearing are fine). I'd aim to add a jacket in the same shade of dark blue (that's what it's displaying as on my phone screen!) which would complement the berry colour/pattern nicely.

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 19/05/2023 01:44

Agree with the berry / red dress

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMe · 19/05/2023 01:52

I agree, the berry maxi dress is the most flattering. I would look for cream or navy jacket and take it from there.

I mean thins in the nicest way… I would return the 3rd/all blue dress. There are far nicer things for sale.

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMe · 19/05/2023 02:11

From Next and no need for a jacket.

This is lovely and a similar shape to berry - which is the most flattering op. Beautiful colour, looks lovely on you

Caszekey · 19/05/2023 02:31

Not keen on those alternative, but thank you. I don't do right sleeves and that midline on the first one looks clunky.

The plain blue one is very fitted in the middle, it would need shape wear under it but that's what was giving me pause. I adore the fussy blue one 😂.

Berry one, which was the favorite in rl, is lovely and I have the shoes for it (a perfect match!) but just feels like a lot of what I wear normally. I have lots of jersey type maxi or below knee dresses because I'm fat so had hoped for something dressier. The consensus is probably right tho, and I should just go long jersey dress and accept I'm too fat for something prettier.

It's more of a purple with pink in rl, I'll have a try to find something that matches colourise, don't really like jackets as I struggle with tight or fitted long sleeves, but perhaps a wrap or similar? I run hot and were not in church so unlikely I'd need much extra on top unless it's really cold

I did buy this, but it got dismissed as not very me.

Dismissed by who? Do you like it? You're allowed to give yourself permission to try out new things! How does it look on? It's a lovely colour and it looks like a potentially flattering cut... If you're a

Accidentally posted too soon!

...if you're after something more dressy than jersey, this (or something similar) could be a winner.

NewChapterHelp · 19/05/2023 02:59

FWIW I don’t think you’re “too fat” for anything. And besides, fat people are allowed to be dressy. The pink one looks lovely on you as it’s a nice fit. If you like that fit but want something dressier then perhaps look for that fit in a satin or more formal fabric.

Caszekey · 19/05/2023 03:03

This is what I'd be expected to turn up in. Just below the knee, flowery

Mom and sister. I wil try it on and post it tomorrow. It feels quite a heavy fabric, in a good way. .

Did you mean to add a link? You said this but there wasn't one.

I like that one NewChapter. I think what's putting me off my own maxi is it feels really broad at the shoulders but yours seems cut a bit less heftily and they have it in a 22. And the pink shoes would go great if it's not too long, I'm only 5ft4 so the pink one is borderline too long

NewChapterHelp · 19/05/2023 03:13

Yeah give it a go and see what you think. The other tip from me would be to book a bra fitting at M&S and take the dress with you to try on with the bras underneath. Different cut bras will make a big different to how you look up top and you’ll be able to pick something that you feel is flattering to your shape under that particular dress.

I’m not very tall either, smaller than you. I think that length would fit me fine so should be fine on you.

BEL88 · 19/05/2023 03:33

I actually really like that second dress on you! It's so pretty

Downunderduchess · 19/05/2023 05:08

I’m going to my nieces wedding in. July (Australia). And these are my 3 options, I have bought them all, wil get wear out of them at some stage.
I’m similar size to you, I love fashion so like to wear pretty dresses as much as possible. I just have to decide which one.

Have you looked at Scarlett & Jo dresses @Caszekey? 😊
I’m the same size as you and wore one (the one in the pic) for a wedding in October and it’s the first time I’ve ever felt “nice” in a dress and not just like I was making do with what fits! I got so many compliments on the day! I’ve got another wedding at the end of the summer and already have another one lined up.

Next and John Lewis both stock them online too and quite often have bits in the sale.

OP you're not 'too fat' for something pretty/ dressy, please don't be so down on yourself. The berry dress is just the nicest one. The frills on the others are overly fussy and just don't suit you, that's not because of your size. I actually don't think they are particularly nice dresses compared to the berry one to be honest!

So please stop beating yourself up about your size. There are flattering, lovely dresses to suit everyone.

If you are really struggling it might be worth buying something and taking it to a seamstress if you have time. Often when you buy a dress from a shop it is just not suited to your body, and that goes for everyone, not just plus size ladies.

If you really want a flattering fit, buy something in a size too big but a fabric you love and take it to a good seamstress to alter it.

UnaVaca · 19/05/2023 05:45

I think you need a professional bra fitting, would make such a difference.

CountryCousin · 19/05/2023 06:04

Your navy dress is great for Summer - but it’s not Autumn wedding wear. The pink is … ok. I think you could do better.

This might be closest to what you already like:

https://www.thereformation.com/products/nadira-dress-es/1310909SSG.html

It would look good with a jacket for September.

This:

https://www.ganni.com/en-gb/seersucker-v-neck-maxi-dress-F7433.html?dwvar_F7433_color=Chicory%20Coffee

is available in a 22 in black velvet. The brown seersucker might be findable in the right size somewhere else. If you scroll through the larger size photos you may feel you could manage the sleeves - they look fine on the model.

Although … this might be even better - wider sleeves and gorgeous shape.

This blouse

only goes to a size 20, but does at least look different to the things you’re thinking of. And you might find something else on the site.

This Seersucker V-neck Maxi Dress is made from a blend of certified recycled polyester. The dress is designed for a slim fit and features a V-neckline, zip closure, long puff sleeves and a high slit at the front.

(I know you said you don’t like jackets - I’m sure you could find something, if needed!)

MsDastardley · 19/05/2023 06:15

I think the ‘fussy’ dress looks most flattering on you, but the sleeves are just too much. As it’s your favourite, about getting the sleeves altered. A dressmaker could advise. I’ve just had some done and it cost £15
