Dress for date night

CUDet · 18/05/2023 08:05

Going on a date with my husband in a couple of weeks time and have no idea what to wear. Don't get to go out often and feel like I either have work or casual clothes. I'm only 5ft and size 10/12. We're going to a nice restaurant and would like to make an effort. I have this dress but suspect it might be a bit too much. It's floor length with an asymmetric hem. Any ideas? If I did buy something new I have a tiny budget of £50

What restaurant? Unless it's dinner at the BAFTAs that might be a bit much op Smile

Barstools123 · 18/05/2023 08:20

Ok you said nice restaurant. Floor length dress is I think too much for pretty much anywhere. Do you have anything shorter? Or a lovely top? Any good jeans or trousers? Where do you usually shop? What style do you like?

CUDet · 18/05/2023 08:21

A french restaurant, definitely not the BAFTAs! Everything else I have is either work clothes or too casual. Think I might need to go shopping.

I don't really have any nice jeans or trousers. I live in denim dresses, shirt dresses and skater dresses normally. I used to shop in Dorothy Perkins, but found them a bit more hit and miss online.

New Look has loads of spring midi dresses op. Like any of them?

C1N1C · 18/05/2023 09:41

Maybe ask your husband? You should dress for each other, so if you're confident in it and he wants to see you in it, isn't that a win-win?

CUDet · 18/05/2023 09:42

Just had a look. They do look nice. Will have to go in store to try on. Most midi dresses end up maxi on me, my legs are extra short for someone of my height.

He loves that dress, so he would definitely have me wear that!

Well according to a recent post on MN nobody dresses up any more and schlepps around in jeans and trainers - even to smart place - so wear what you want!

satsuuuumas · 18/05/2023 09:52

I love getting dressed up for date night! It is a lovely outfit but I agree with PPs that it may be a little too formal on this occasion.

I second the New Look midi dresses suggestion, I got a few of them last year and find them easy to dress up or down or even some of them for work.

SirVixofVixHall · 18/05/2023 09:54

I think it looks gorgeous ! I wear floor length dresses for all sorts of things.

Doggymummar · 18/05/2023 09:58

It looks fab on you, but I'm afraid I am guilty of casualness. I went out for dinner last night in black bootcut jeans Stan Smith's a blouse and pink blazer. I looked the same as most people. No dresses 😞🥻

TomorrowsPrincess · 18/05/2023 10:03

No such thing as 'too much'
It looks lovely.
If you feel comfortable in it, wear it.
If it makes you feel good, wear it!
We do date night every other month or so, and I get dressed up to the nines like I'm 21 again...... and I look and feel great and my DP loves it!

LittlePoBeep · 18/05/2023 10:44

I'd wear that! I always dress up, don't care if it's OTT for the venue. We're off to the pub tonight for food and I'll be as glammed up as possible!

AllIeveknewonlyou · 18/05/2023 14:08

Looks really pretty on you. Unless you feel the urge to splurge on a new outfit I'd wear that and focus on a face mask and make-up and perfume (if you enjoy that!) and music before you two head off.

What length do you prefer?

Short
Midi
Maxi
Midaxi

I prefer short normally. My milk bottle coloured legs haven't been out of tights or leggings yet this year though.
That dress makes me think of Austin Powers, very 1960s flower power.

@AllIeveknewonlyou @LittlePoBeep @TomorrowsPrincess @SirVixofVixHall thanks for the lovely comments.
I think I'll check out New Look, but at least I have an outfit in reserve.

Life is too short to never wear "the dress"! You look good in it and you don't have money to buy a new one so just wear it! People are so worried about looking over dressed. Get your DH to wear a nice shirt and the pair of you will look and feel fab

StoneColdAlibi · 19/05/2023 11:53

Your choices are very conservative, is that your style or is it lack of confidence in picking other options?
I can suggest some stuff but there's no point if I'm going to scare you away.

CUDet · 19/05/2023 15:47

@StoneColdAlibi you're right. Please share if you have some ideas though, I definitely need some inspiration. I am very short though, so any clothes in a regular range are much longer on me.
