Dress for wedding guest help - I've fucked up

PuffinMcStuffin · 14/05/2023 14:18

I'm going to a wedding this weekend, I've just tried on all my suitable clothes and nothing fits.

I feel so awful and angry with myself, that's probably a problem for another thread, but now I need to find something suitable in a very short space of time.

I think I'm now a 14/16 hourglass with an ample bum and hips. Am 40, if that's relevant.

The only place I can shop between now and the wedding is braehead shopping centre, and i don't think anything bought online will arrive in time now - do any of you stylish people have any suggestions? I've never been to braehead, so I've no idea if I've got a hope of finding something that will feel good.

Thank you in advance to anyone that can recommend a shop or a dress, I'm overwhelmed.

I think your best bet is to get loads to try from next online, order them to the store in Braehead to try on? You can probs pay for next day delivery and they have tons of stuff online

PuffinMcStuffin · 14/05/2023 14:26

Ordering stuff to the store is a great idea, I hadn't thought of that! Thank you.

Braehead isn't great in my experience, M&S, next, new look, joules, river island and h&m is pretty much it for women's clothes. Could you get to Silverburn or into town instead? Next online stocks lots of brands and usually delivery to the store is quick. M&S are similar but in my experience delivery is much slower.

Wellhellother · 14/05/2023 14:46

Assuming the wedding is next weekend, you have loads of time for delivery. Order lots and return all but 1

KrasiTime · 14/05/2023 14:47

I don’t know if there is a John Lewis near you but you could maybe try their personal shopper service if you can get to one? Good luck.

FrangipaniBlue · 14/05/2023 14:49

Very use yodel for delivery, if you get it delivered to one of their drop off shops it's free

There's loads on their website, they sell brands like AX Paris, boohoo, river island and new look

Fuckitydoodah · 14/05/2023 14:50

If you got on and ordered stuff this afternoon it'll come in time. Pay extra for speedy delivery if needed.

Fuckitydoodah · 14/05/2023 14:51

What's your budget?

waltzingparrot · 14/05/2023 14:51

Wallis do next day delivery for £5.99 and have loads of wedding guest dresses on sale.

Dropchain · 14/05/2023 14:51

I ordered something Monday afternoon (Bank Hol) and it was ready to collect from my local M&S foodhall by the next afternoon so you may be lucky.

Shufflebumnessie · 14/05/2023 14:54

I've ordered from Next a few times recently and each time it's arrived the following day.
Hopefully this link to their delivery options works:
https://zendesk.next.co.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/4407489456657-Delivery-Options

Or M&S generally deliver to a store quickly too.

Good luck, hope you find something lovely.

PuffinMcStuffin · 14/05/2023 15:09

Thank you so much for the suggestions, I'm working my way through them..

Delivery is really unlikely, where I live everything comes via secondary courier (Highlands and Islands), even amazon prime is a minium of 3 days, so its a bit of a non-starter.

I'd not thought of Silverburn, I'll have a look now and see if a can plan a route that passes there, and really tempted to leave very early and try to get to John Lewis in Glasgow and book for the personal shopper - that's a great idea.

Budget is up to £100.

Look at Jolie Mae dresses in John Lewis and get them delivered to the Waitrose in Dobbie's garden centre. Lots to choose from, in your budget and easy to wear.

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/jolie-moi-jaylynn-flare-sleeve-jersey-maxi-dress-blue-white/p110318345?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappios&size=14&&_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

@PuffinMcStuffin you need to book the John Lewis stylist session online first

Did you see the yumi dress mentioned on another thread on here? Is this too casual for a wedding. I ordered one. Came in a couple of days. You’d need to be 5ft 6 or more it’s long but it’s very flattering.

PuffinMcStuffin · 14/05/2023 15:46

Right, I've ordered 3 dresses to be delivered next day, in the hope that they might arrive in time.

I've ordered two more to be delivered to the local M&S food hall, and my boyfriend has agreed to stop in at silverburn on the way up the road if nothing I've ordered works.

Thank you so so much everyone!

PuffinMcStuffin · 14/05/2023 15:47

@Inertia that's very similar to one I've ordered, I think it's a really good cut for bigger bums and hips

SmudgeButt · 14/05/2023 15:48

I tend to order a massive amount of stuff to be delivered to the local M&S, take it home to try on in peace and quiet and then take the majority back a few days later. Last time it was £700 to order and I'll I kept was one pair of trousers - but they were exactly what I needed.

I don’t know your area at all but when I was in a similar situation I went to Debenhams as there’s lots of different brands in one place.
So if there’s one near you it might be worth a look.

MsWhitworth · 14/05/2023 16:16

Debenhams has closed.

Improbablecat · 14/05/2023 16:21

There's a waitrose at Dobbies at Braehead, it's round the back of Ikea. You can get John Lewis dresses delivered there and you could probably use the family bathroom there to try them on and send back what you don't want right away to save another trip / posting back from home. Otherwise the shops in Braehead itself are a bit limited though you might find something nice in Next / Joules.

Jolie Moi is a nice brand with v forgiving and thick good quality fabrics. I wore something v like this to a wedding when I'd gone up a size, I found the 14 was a perfect fit when I was closer to a 16 round the bum https://www.johnlewis.com/jolie-moi-saniya-leopard-print-maxi-dress-green/p6406515

KrasiTime · 14/05/2023 16:30

I get a lot of this brand for weddings- always in the sale!

MsWhitworth · 14/05/2023 16:16

Debenhams has closed.

Well I’m obviously very behind the times then lol I had no idea they had all closed!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 14/05/2023 16:49

Definitely John Lewis and get it delivered to Waitrose, they do next day delivery if you order before 8pm I think, if you spend over £35c and you can return there too. Sorry I’m not sure if you live near a Waitrose.

I also second Very, they have a brilliant choice, some great bargains and their delivery is fast.
