Dress for wedding guest help - I've fucked up

PuffinMcStuffin · 14/05/2023 14:18

I'm going to a wedding this weekend, I've just tried on all my suitable clothes and nothing fits.

I feel so awful and angry with myself, that's probably a problem for another thread, but now I need to find something suitable in a very short space of time.

I think I'm now a 14/16 hourglass with an ample bum and hips. Am 40, if that's relevant.

The only place I can shop between now and the wedding is braehead shopping centre, and i don't think anything bought online will arrive in time now - do any of you stylish people have any suggestions? I've never been to braehead, so I've no idea if I've got a hope of finding something that will feel good.

Thank you in advance to anyone that can recommend a shop or a dress, I'm overwhelmed.

Where abouts in Highlands are you? You can order from John Lewis to some Co-Ops - should arrive Tuesday or Wednesday depending where you are. I’ve done it a few times to Inverness and it’s very reliable 😊

I’m a similar age and a bit bigger than you. This is probably a bit too casual for most for a wedding, but I wore it to one recently, dressed it up with nice accessories and got lots of nice compliments. It’s quite forgiving and I think would be a safe bet, I’d size down:

Is there still a Next clothes shop at Braehead or is it just Home shop? They have some nice dresses in that were suitable for a wedding. I was looking at them in my local store yesterday.

Debenhams has closed.

Debenhams are online only now

DonnaDonna0 · 14/05/2023 18:24

Debenhams closed their last store two years ago in May 2021.

I second order John Lewis to be delivered to Waitrose

PinkyFlamingo · 14/05/2023 19:19

Theye is a Yours in Brahead, nice stuff.

randomsabreuse · 14/05/2023 19:23

Any chance you can get to Silverburn instead of Braehead? Monsoon is often worth a look.

Doggolover2 · 14/05/2023 19:59

How can you be in the highlands and Braehead is the closest shopping centre. Surely Fort William, Aberdeen, Perth, Dundee and Stirling are all closer?

though if you can get to Braehead that’s so close to town you would be best to go there x

Improbablecat · 14/05/2023 21:01

She said highlands and islands so I presumed an island or somewhere like tarbert where you're quite limited by ferry times, when we lived somewhere like that Glasgow was by far the easiest city to access, and I was a bit angsty about driving into the city centre vs coming off the motorway into a retail park!

Scirocco · 14/05/2023 23:41

Silverburn or Buchanan Galleries would have better options, probably, and are almost as easy to get to. The John Lewis in Buchanan Galleries is actually pretty good. There's also decent individual shops in the shopping centre. Junction 17 on the M8 is still closed though, so you'd need to come off at either Charing Cross or Townhead, depending which way you're coming from.

Studio 8 by phase eight are great for the fuller figure. Available in John Lewis.

Lots of shops do next day delivery - try simplybe

Where delivery counts as Highlands and Islands means chuff all... it goes by postcode, so lochgoilhead and crianlarich are both too remote to be counted as mainland Scotland 😐

PuffinMcStuffin · 15/05/2023 15:27

Thank you, silverburn looks like a much better bet for a nice dress.
The dresses I've ordered should hopefully be here tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest so my fingers are crossed.
I nipped in to the local charity shop this morning (literally the only clothes shop between me and Dumbarton) and bought a couple of back up dresses to try on when I get home from work, they aren't what I'd usually go for, but they are a step up from joggers and a hoodie!
I'm very grateful for all your suggestions - I had no idea I can get John Lewis delivered to the local coop! I'm going to ask them about that next time I'm in there.

Thanks for your defense @tabulahrasa , you know your Scottish geography!

tabulahrasa · 16/05/2023 04:18

Ah, actually bot that good with geography, just grew up in Argyll , so very familiar with the stupid delivery 😂

Colinorpercy · 16/05/2023 10:56

Let us know how you get on with your deliveries.

just another thought in case it’s easy for you to get to via the backroads (depending on where you’re coming from)…there’s a Libellula Boutique in Milngavie and they usually have some nice dresses. They also have a website so you can phone the store and they check what they have in stock so it’s not a wasted trip.

hilbil21 · 16/05/2023 17:07

If you're anywhere near Helensburgh you could try Laura Kate?

porridgeisbae · 16/05/2023 18:54

A lot of deliveries tell you they arrive the next day and usually complete on that; for instance a lot of Amazon.

Lifeisapeach · 16/05/2023 22:50

John Lewis next day delivery is always my saviour.

I bought the Yumi green dress that someone posted on here recently. Im
Similar shape to you and it’s really flattering. Perfect for a wedding too. Good Luck.

Also from Glasgow .. and braehead (any shopping centre for that matter) has gone downhill in my opinion.

Lorralorr · 17/05/2023 10:03

That dress is gorge
