What to wear over summer dresses

Oak30 · 11/05/2023 15:29

Hi, looking for help with what to wear in the evenings in Lanzarote in June please, first time there so not sure how hot is too hot for denim jacket for example. I'm looking for something to wear over dresses if it gets cooler in the evening. Are denim jackets too heavy for there? I have a green utility jacket too but don't know if that's too heavy? Am open to all ideas was thinking cardigan but I don't have any that would work for summer and afraid of looking too dated. Thanks in advance:)

Definitely don't think you'll need a denim jacket in June! I take some light jumpers normally to put on over a dress.

Plump82 · 11/05/2023 15:33

You will 100% not need a jacket in June. I was there in March and I needed a denim jacket and only when the sun was completely away. When we go in September/October I never need one.

What about a lightweight kaftan or kimono @Oak30? It can be used on the beach, by the pool and also on an evening as a cover-up should you feel you need it...

Boohoo have loads in different colours actually, like this one:

I hope you find what you're looking for!

Thank you everyone! That was really helpful, really like the look of those kimonos! Much appreciate the replies 🥰

I agree.

I have a liking for scarfs / shawls / pashmina type things. Can be easily put in a bag if it is too hot and has multiple options to cover shoulders / arms / head even.

Oak30 · 12/05/2023 07:59

Good idea @sashh thank you

You really won’t need anything in June. DD and I go every year in June and just take pool clothes, a couple of T-shirts and shorts and three dresses for the evenings.

Oak30 · 12/05/2023 09:38

Thanks @mdh2020 as it is I know I'm looking to bring too much, need to do a serious cut back 😊 Was trying to figure out if it's windy, which I've read it can be, what one thing could I bring to cover up if I need it, I've found a crochet type cardigan hopefully will work or a pashmina. Thanks again

I'm going somewhere hot and sunny in June too, and I'm taking a pashmina and a crochet shrug. No jacket.

CordyLines · 12/05/2023 13:32

Yep, I'm just back from a heatwave ridden Southern Spain, where it cooled down (thankfully!) a little in the evenings, all I used was a light pashmina thing which was brilliant, did the trick and looked and felt fine, they were everywhere there BTW. So versatile and as someone else said, they fold up and you can stick them in your bag.

Hope you have a great time.

katemulberrybush · 12/05/2023 13:44

@BeccyMumsnet

None of those would look nice over a dress in the evening

The first one is beach wear

The others are all modelled over jeans

minipie · 12/05/2023 13:48

I have a few cardigans or loose batwing style jumpers that work, in cotton. Not necessarily the most up to date look but I think most people are less bothered about fashion on holiday, everyone just wants to be comfortable!

Crochet cardigans are in at the moment so that would work, although suspect I’d get chilly in one due to the holes (I get cold easily!)

friend had this recommended on a John Lewis personal shop. Very versatile - Goes with dresses etc - could wear for travelling on the plane?

Mummysalwaysright · 12/05/2023 13:52

Aren't kimonos now considered "cultural appropriation" (unless you're from Japan of course)?

I would just take a shortish cardigan.

Hairpinleg · 12/05/2023 14:03

I don't think I've ever seen someone wear a pashmina in all the times I've been to Lanzarote. Not even much older women. It's normally cardigans or denim jackets over dresses.

Completely agree

porridgeisbae · 12/05/2023 14:13

Some fitted cardigans, maybe very light ones.

I don't think they look old fashioned, just smart and pretty if you can find some that fit you well.

Ethical fashion is somewhat a luxury practiced by the middle class as it tends to be more expensive at the time of purchase (though ideally more expensive items are more durable.

Having said that, I'm disabled and unable to work for life and I getmost of my stuff from charity shops. I get quite a few pretty dresses each time. The price of new dresses etc shocks me now, even in Primark or Peacocks.

I mainly just use Primark for leggings etc, basics that wear out.

porridgeisbae · 12/05/2023 14:20

@Rainallnight @Tornado70 As they were suggesting an item, I imagine they decided what brand/store to suggest based on the type of site that most people tend to use and have as a budget. Poncey ones would just be not what the average person does or can afford.

Aside from the ethical side of shopping at boohoo, I was just surprised to see the post from beccymumsnet, mnhq don’t generally come onto threads with links to boohoo or anywhere else unless it’s links to a sponsored thread. It just seemed odd and if it hadnt come up in blue I would have assumed it wasn’t genuine mumsnet staff, just any old poster
but yes I was surprised that the links were to boohoo also

Topictwenty · 12/05/2023 14:49

Oh and just went back to op and checked, she didn’t ask mention budget at all so it was a bit strange t
