What to wear over summer dresses

Hi, looking for help with what to wear in the evenings in Lanzarote in June please, first time there so not sure how hot is too hot for denim jacket for example. I'm looking for something to wear over dresses if it gets cooler in the evening. Are denim jackets too heavy for there? I have a green utility jacket too but don't know if that's too heavy? Am open to all ideas was thinking cardigan but I don't have any that would work for summer and afraid of looking too dated. Thanks in advance:)

Another easy thing I do for over a dress/sleeveless top etc. is to get the scarf/pashmina thing. Tie the short ends together separately to make a sort of armhole at each end. Place arms into hole, shrug it on and voila, nice cardi type warmer upper. And a match for everything if it's a neutral colour, which is "in" now. Easy and as pp said, anything goes on holiday, but these are versatile and look good, well at least for me! No bulky cardis in the luggage either....

orangeflags · 12/05/2023 17:44

We go there a lot and I actually always get cold in the evenings, especially if we are walking by the sea. I take a light jacket or cardigan

Oblomov23 · 12/05/2023 17:54

A small glitzy glittery cardigan would be nice. Or sainsbury Tu £12.

@Topictwenty I know they didn't mention budget, I meant that thinking of people's budgets is probably why they didn't suggest something in a budget range most people didn't have.

I was surprised at the 'spam' too though, it's the first time I've seen them do that.

I usually go for a few linen shirts. They double up as beach cover ups as well So it’s a win win. H&M have some available from their conscious collection. So do Zara, M&S and The White Company. Lots of price points.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 12/05/2023 19:29

I agree with 2ndMrsdeWinter on linen shirts. Plenty versatile and has the huge advantage that they comfortably cover your shoulders if you’ve caught the sun a bit. Scratchy fabrics/ denim/ wool on your shoulders can really irritate. Lanzarote can get some chilly sea breezes early and late so taking a cover up is not a bad idea. God I sound like a fussy old bat!

shalo2 · 12/05/2023 21:03

We went last June and it was windy every night and I was cold ! So I was glad I brought a cream denim jacket and a cosy short cardi for over dresses. I wore linen trousers at night and long dresses.

Oak30 · 13/05/2023 00:02

Thank you everyone just catching up on this now, love all the suggestions so thank you, budget is probably anything up to something like that Fat face cardigan, but you've given me loads of ideas between the short cardigans, pashmina, linen shirts etc etc, it's been a while since we've gone anywhere hot so appreciate all the posts 🙏

@BeccyMumsnet

None of those would look nice over a dress in the evening

The first one is beach wear

The others are all modelled over jeans

None of them would look nice over anything.

WonderingWanda · 13/05/2023 07:54

What about a denim shirt instead of a jacket?

taybert · 13/05/2023 07:58

Worth remembering that most MNHQ staff are also users of the site, I’ve certainly seen it before where a staff member has commented as a user but accidentally used their staff account. So it could have just been an accident and @BeccyMumsnet may have just been posting recommendations for what she thought. In which case the replies are a bit mean.

taybert · 13/05/2023 08:00

Agree re linen shirts, I think the cardigans shown are too heavy. Uniqlo have linen shirts in loads of different colours, worth a look.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 13/05/2023 09:19

I find the problem with cardigans over dresses is that if they are too long, they swamp the pretty dress. If they are short ones, they are often fitted and don't suit the summer vibe.

Boden have some nice cropped cardigans, which are soft and lightweight, short but not tight. I have one and am really happy with it and will probably get more.

TBH, though I wouldn't wear a cardigan over a dress on holiday unless it was absolutely perfect. I'd actually bring a pashmina. I'm not a big fan of them, but if you're sitting down and there's that slight chill that becomes irritating, you can pull it out of your bag, throw it over your shoulders, job done.

I agree. The cardigans suggested are too heavy and dark, and as for a denim jacket...

The thing about a shawl is it takes up almost no space, isn't heavy and it doesn't hide the dress which should be the main focus.

I have a few cardigans or loose batwing style jumpers that work, in cotton. Not necessarily the most up to date look but I think most people are less bothered about fashion on holiday, everyone just wants to be comfortable!

Crochet cardigans are in at the moment so that would work, although suspect I’d get chilly in one due to the holes (I get cold easily!)

Where did you get the batwings from ?

I have a few dresses that have 'angel' sleeves which I love but very difficult to get a cardo over

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 22/05/2023 07:27

@Mummysalwaysright

Aren't kimonos now considered "cultural appropriation" (unless you're from Japan of course)?

No they aren't. There's quite a lot of videos about this on YouTube

Alitri · 22/05/2023 07:36

A thin hoodie might be alright. I always wear hoodies no matter what the weather is like even on the hottest days because I'd always feel exposed if I was just wearing a t shirt and jeans and get very uncomfortable but in summer I'd wear a thin hoodie so I wouldnt get too hot.

So maybe a thin hoodie or denim jacket.

Rina66 · 22/05/2023 08:13

I bought this linen split back unlined jacket from a company called Threadshed, it's sold out now which is why I can't link it - i wore it over dresses on holiday and it also looked good with my jeans and shorts too.

Scarf, shawl, thin cotton cardigan. Tend to have cold shoulders since 50s.

Lanzarote is pretty windy though. Hot in June in the sun, but in the wind I've needed a denim jacket before. Or how about an oversized lightweight denim shirt? Like this one https://themeekboutique.co.uk/products/oversized-soft-denim-shirt?_pos=1&_sid=5ea1a25a4&_ss=r

Oversized Soft Denim Shirt

This is a gorgeous buttoned shirt, soft and fluid and comfy to wear. The cotton fabric has a slightly vintaged, stonewashed look to it.  Sleeves have buttoned cuffs. Looks great worn done up or open with a tee or vest underneath. 100% cotton - this shi...

Im going to tenerife and I've got 2 cardigans that are short, fitted and shortish sleeve, in navy and white plus a light knit in light pink. It's a batwing sleeve cotton 'sweatshirt' but thin silky fabric.

I hope this will be enough. Off to dig out multicoloured pashmina now!

Justalittlebitduckling · 22/05/2023 09:19

BeccyMumsnet · 11/05/2023 17:23

What about a lightweight kaftan or kimono @Oak30? It can be used on the beach, by the pool and also on an evening as a cover-up should you feel you need it...

Boohoo have loads in different colours actually, like this one:

I hope you find what you're looking for!

Boohoo.com, seriously?!

Twiglets1 · 22/05/2023 09:47

Doubt you will need anything - it may be a bit windy but not cold. I would take a lightweight cotton cardigan personally just to be safe, but probably not need it.
