An alternative to leggings!

Mumofthree8 · 09/05/2023 08:13

I hope someone with a broader idea of clothes can help me, I absolutely love leggings, they are comfy and practical for me but I don’t feel comfortable going out in public in such skin tight clothing (even thick ones) I’d love to hear of trouser alternatives. I’m a 12-14 with a big bum but relatively small waist, my top half is a size 8. I’ve got sensory issues (autistic) and wearing anything tight or restricted (denim) makes me irritable and I can only stand them for a few hours at a time which means multiple outfit changes in a day!
I tried a pair of paperbag waisted light denim jeans but they didn’t look great, the cut wasn’t good.
any ideas and links appreciated, thank you!

Try jeggings?

porridgeisbae · 11/05/2023 00:49

I maybe have sensory issues but mine are more like I prefer things tightish. Or maybe it is a body image thing- if I'm in anything baggy, I feel fatter and frumpier.

OrchidsBlooming · 11/05/2023 01:22

They are pricy and I recommend sizing up to slightly baggier, but these are light, never bag at the knees and for me (and my apple shape), more flattering than joggers or harems

Thanks all, I’m going to give the cotton blend slim fit joggers a try from M&S lots of colours so finger crossed!
The lulu lemon ones are lovely too but I may have to wait until the sale. Hoping to also tr the hush harems and then search for a pair of light fabric culottes too; wow so many great suggestions.
Thank you!

My daughter wears dresses over leggings.
I've got some cheep elasticated waistband smart trousers from Amazon for work which are lasting very well and very comfortable.

M and S do straight leg stretchy trousers with elastic waist, dont know how to link but they are item 07659614. I am now wearing these as look awful in leggings now.

I wear these for work, they're very comfy but 2 pairs of mine have shrunk in a 30° wash and are now up round my ankles😒

ittakes2 · 11/05/2023 09:12

M&S are great for sensory issues just look at their range of clothes for women - they also do seamless socks which my teens wear and appreciate.

Dreamwatchwait · 11/05/2023 11:03

Hush harem pants are so comfy

Dreamwatchwait · 11/05/2023 11:04

Also just bought some Roman culottes which I really like

Lovemusic33 · 11/05/2023 11:05

I have sensory issues with clothes too, I hate jeans but will wear them for a short time. I have a pair of stretchy cord dungarees that I am living in at the moment and I love harem trousers.

Cocteautriplet · 11/05/2023 11:18

I am a size 20 and don’t like showing my bum off in leggings but I love being comfortable so was searching for an alternative. I discovered Gudrun harem trousers and absolutely live in them. They are soft, cool and floaty for summer but in winter I slip a pair of thin leggings or footless tights underneath and they are really cosy. Pricey but amazing quality and they last and last!

This. Hush’s Amie joggers are brilliant. So comfortable yet much dressier than leggings.

I love the look of these but I am petite :(

Are these M&S ones super soft? My skin is extremely sensitive. Love that they come in super short too, amazing!

JoyApple · 11/05/2023 12:12

These from H&M look comfy although I'm not sure if they really are cropped? https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1171571001.html

I also can only wear trousers at waist and not above so limits my options.

Cropped jersey trousers - Black - Ladies | H&M GB

Cropped trousers in soft viscose jersey with straight legs. Regular waist with concealed elastication.

You lot are my tribe, thankyou for this thread! I too am ND and live in jeggings and tees due to sensory issues. I can't do tights with dresses as that's far too many layers to feel and dungarees might be a goer although they might get annoying with how many times i have to go for a wee, but still I wanted to find some nice alternative to wear, so great suggestions!

Definitely try the M&S slim fit joggers. To me they're more like elasticated jeans than joggers. When I got mine recently they were the first thing I've worn with a button and zip since before the pandemic - I've lived in jeggings for years. They feel as comfy as jeggings but make a nice change. I've put on a lot of weight too and I think they're really flattering.

Yes they are super soft, very comfortable but I'd advise to hand wash them 🙂

catgirl1976 · 11/05/2023 13:12

I came on to mention the M&S stretch wide leg jersey trousers but I see others have beaten me too it

I have them in every colour and live in them. They are cheap but don't look it and super comfy and generous to those of us with larger arses and hips

I wear leggings with boots in the winter and Robell with sandals in the summer. Elasticated waists, several different leg width styles and lengths. In independent shops, some department stores and online.

Some of these are lovely. I love the pink tropical ankle grazers! I’ve not seen this site before but will be keeping an eye on it from now on!

Redebs · 11/05/2023 15:17

I wear black jersey harem pants a lot. I have treetrunk legs and leggings aren't flattering.

Viscose jersey is incredibly soft and comfortable. If you get the ones gathered a bit at the hip, instead of all at the waist, you hardly feel anything restrictive.

I do wear palazzo pants too, but have an unfortunate habit of getting an opposite foot caught in the flapping fabric of the loose leg and have fallen over spectacularly.

KirstenBlest · 11/05/2023 15:27

Do you mean the harem pants that are sort of like joggers or the loose ones with a low crotch?

WedTheBed · 11/05/2023 15:28

Jersey flares.

You’ll never go back. As comfy as leggings.. if not comfier, trendy, the 70’s patterns are always a plus!

Super soft and comfortable but not too clingy trousers

PrincessofWellies · 11/05/2023 16:18

These are very loose fotting and supersoft but size down 1 size.
