Work shoes for with wide leg trousers

What shoes are people wearing with wide leg trousers nowadays for work when you need to look a bit smarter than trainers allow? I’ve not been out of trainers or Docs in an age - I’m struggling! Would chunky loafers work? I can’t do pointy kitten heels, my toe box is too wide and I think it would look too dressy on me anyway. In my industry normal dress code is pretty casual but I need to smarten up a bit for an event.

I need the answer to this too!! I've been wearing my DM Chelsea boots with everything for months but only have been wearing skirts and dresses...

HuffPuffBosomHoik · 07/05/2023 22:11

I'm really struggling with this too op, so I'm glad you posted! I have to wear closed toe at work (secondary school), so can't wear sandals which is how they all seem to be styled online...

I was wondering about Mary Janes maybe with a chunky heel

Flockameanie · 07/05/2023 22:24

brogues - I've got a pair of light-ish orange nubuck ones. They sound horrible, but they're not! They look great with wide leg jeans/ trousers

Scaryshepherd · 07/05/2023 22:31

I have a couple of pairs of brogues.

Sammysquiz · 08/05/2023 07:00

Am in same situation, can’t find anything that looks quite right. I wear a neutral coloured pair of trainers (they’re Supergas and the colour is called Almond I think) which can look smarter than white, but still trainers nonetheless.

abyssofwoah · 08/05/2023 07:29

Glad I’m not the only one who can’t get my head around this one.

Thanks @Flockameanie @Scaryshepherd, can you post a pic/link of the kind of brogues you’ve found work? I’ll be wearing black trousers and mainly black/dark on top so I’ll need to go with black, and I’m guessing not patent.

I wear Moshulu in the winter https://www.moshulu.co.uk/product/buttermere-2468#?variant=15 I prefer the coloured ones but have black as well and am currently wearing a pair of pale pink suede heels I bought for my brother's wedding. Everyone commented on those but no one else would dream of wearing them 😆 I teach primary.

The only thing I’ve got that works is a pair of block heeled suede ankle boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/05/2023 08:22

Somebody needs to invent a work shoe that is basically a trainer disguised as a shoe.

Divebar2021 · 08/05/2023 08:26

Are the trousers full length?

Scootergrrrl · 08/05/2023 08:47

I have these from Next to wear with my wide-legged trousers. They're the only shoes which go well with them and they're really comfortable. I work in a secondary school and they've been admired by SLT so must be ok for work!

This creator wears a lot of loafers and flat shoes in a modern way… her Insta account is In case of Brit. Cos have always got a couple of loafers and usually at least one other modern take on a ballet flat that might work. It seems any lace up is referred to a brogue nowadays when clearly they’re not… but keeping with the lace up theme you could go for a saddle shoe (black or brown with white) or a totally white shoe and contrast with your trousers. They don’t have to be stiff they could be soft like a jazz shoe. If it’s a heel I like low block heels which I sometimes add socks to to give it more of a boot look. There are also clogs although I appreciate probably not for everyone.

I love those loafers, but I don't have Instagram so I can't check for the retailer.

Do you know where the loafers are from please @Divebar2021 ?

Also love these shoes (less keen on the rest of her look but they also look comfortable)

RampantIvy · 08/05/2023 09:07

Jumping in because our dress code at work has been updated to ban trainers.

That link doesn't work @Scootergrrrl.
I love the look of loafers, but I have a wide toe box and narrow heels so most of them are like flip flops on me.

SouthCoastShell · 08/05/2023 09:18

A ballet flat looks good with wide leg trousers

Any better? I thought I'd figured out the links thing by now 😁

RampantIvy · 08/05/2023 09:26

That one worked, but I can't wear those to work, they are too casual. I have some that are fairly similar.

isthismylifenow · 08/05/2023 09:37

I will start out by saying that I am not an avid follower of the latest in fashion trends, but I do like to be put together.

The trainer to wear with everything trend hasn't really taken off as much here (maybe we are behind the times or just have different trends)

As I live in a hot country wide leg linen trousers are very popular, but trainers etc would be too hot, so sandals would be the norm. As you said you cant have open toe, what about a wedge or flatform closed toe sandal? I personally I need a bit of a lift when wearing wide leg, if you like a flat shoe, a pointy toe flat looks nice too.

heretoread81 · 08/05/2023 09:43

I live in these, they are casual with jeans, smart with black trousers and comfy enough for walking miles xx

@Scootergrrrl those are AMAZING! I have just ordered two pairs in different colours to go with all my wide legged trousers!
