Work shoes for with wide leg trousers

What shoes are people wearing with wide leg trousers nowadays for work when you need to look a bit smarter than trainers allow? I’ve not been out of trainers or Docs in an age - I’m struggling! Would chunky loafers work? I can’t do pointy kitten heels, my toe box is too wide and I think it would look too dressy on me anyway. In my industry normal dress code is pretty casual but I need to smarten up a bit for an event.

Really chunky loafers or brogues. They need a bit of heft to balance out the width.

I’ve got a previous season’s version of these. On me, they work with slim trousers but not wide.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/05/2023 10:07

Those Next ones are trainers. I couldn’t wear them to work.

I have to wear closed-toe shoes at work, but wide-leg trousers are my go-to, so I have lots of things I pair them with. These are a more fun take on a ballet flat, and are made of very soft leather. They're from Clark's, and I know that's not the coolest place to shop but I have weird shape feet and their shoes fit me almost every time.

I also have a patent leather brogues from Russell and Bromley which I love, and little soft lace-up jazz shoes from Shoe Embassy. If you want to splurge, I'd definitely recommend Tracy Neuls for fun flat shoes

What about Vivaia. They were in the Mumsnet swears by email yesterday.

For my long wide length trousers I wear these to work. super comfy wear them heaps and they still look like new.

For shorter wide length I'd go as others suggested loafers.

I can't believe those sale prices for the weejuns! I have several pairs. I haven't worn them for a few years as I've been into other things, but they're good shoes so they're waiting for me to want to wear them again. I always bought mine on sale and can't believe how much they've jumped up in price since I last bought, about 6 years ago. I don't like their fun colours, mine are all sensible browns/oxblood/tan, with the most exciting being a brick red.

I agree with the poster from the hot country, I think wide legs look great with sandals and I have several pairs of Arizona's for this. But with a cropped wide leg I also like Pascals (the comfy DM). Yesterday I tried a pair of Bostons with my longer wide leg and it really didn't work for me.

I've got these black patent loafers from Next. I wear them with long wide trousers and cropped/cigarette style trousers.

I wear chunky black patent brogues or loafers

RampantIvy · 08/05/2023 13:09

I really like those @givememarmite. Sadly, I think I would get too much heel slippage with those.

Patent always looks best in these styles IMO

Duckcurtains · 08/05/2023 13:16

I'm sorry I can't help, but where are you buying your trousers. I have the idea that my new, updated work wardrobe should be high waist, wide leg trousers and leather trainers, but I'm really struggling to buy the trousers.

Also what tops?

LoobyDop · 08/05/2023 13:22

I struggle with this. I think brogues, loafers or ballet flats would work, but I keep defaulting back to leather converse because “it’s cold in my office”- but really, it’s because I’m lazy and I prefer the converse.

RampantIvy · 08/05/2023 13:25

Blossomtoes · 08/05/2023 13:15

I have two pairs of these. They go with pretty much everything.

None of those would be suitable where I work.

Blossomtoes · 08/05/2023 13:39

Where on earth do you work where a pair of grey suede lace ups wouldn’t be ‘suitable’?

RampantIvy · 08/05/2023 13:48

The link just took me to a whole page of unsuitable shoes. I didn't see any plain grey suede lace up shoes @Blossomtoes

TheMoth · 08/05/2023 14:07

I tend to wear high block heels with long wide leg trousers and a brogue or loafer with my shorter ones.
Tops are either fitted t shirt type, or tucked in floaty shirt, if I'm going for a Katherine Hepburn look. The high waist on the trousers pulls it in. I'm tall though, and have coat hanger shoulders, so it doesn't swamp me.

impressivelycunty · 08/05/2023 14:20

If you don't mind spending more for some incredibly comfortable flats/loafers/ballet pumps, check out Bared Footwear and Air & Grace.

greyhairnomore · 08/05/2023 15:08

Loafers , ballet flats seem to be back.

UncleHerbie · 08/05/2023 15:20

I vote for G Bass “Weejuns”. First pair I bought full price, but got three more pairs from TK Maxx for less than the cost of the first pair - result. They are extremely comfortable and go with everything I wear

abyssofwoah · 08/05/2023 18:27

Thanks so much for all the advice and links! I’m going to order some loafers and brogues and see how I get. I have some ballet flats to fall back on, so that’s a plan B. I don’t want to spend too much as I suspect I won’t wear them often but it’s nice to know some good brands if I get the wear out of them.

I'm wearing Western-style ankle boots with a block heel with my floor-skimming ones today (mine are from And/Or). For cropped widelegs, I'd do brogues or chunky loafers.
