Black or Navy Bridesmaid Dresses?

PlanningAhead2024 · 05/05/2023 13:46

As the title states, I’m looking for opinions on navy vs black bridesmaid dresses? Husband doesn’t mind if his suit is black or navy so final decision is whatever the bridesmaid dresses are as I’d like them to match the groomsmen.

Our wedding colour “theme” is very neutral with a lot of creams, golds, and greens (flower leaves mainly). Flowers are all white, and we’re having a late afternoon wedding so a lot of sunset pictures.

the white dress I’ve posted is very similar to my own just for reference.

Thanks!! Xx

The navy will look gorgeous. Black is just too monochrome.

mynameiscalypso · 05/05/2023 13:51

I like the navy best. I think black is a bit too much of a harsh contrast with a white dress especially in summer. I've worn navy as a bridesmaid and it worked well.

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/05/2023 13:54

Love navy for bridesmaids. Less keen on the black.

Black can be a difficult colour for a lot of people wear. Navy is a bit more forgiving.

mrssunshinexxx · 05/05/2023 13:57

I had navy bridesmaid dresses so that gets my vote

rainraingoawaay · 05/05/2023 13:57

I had the same flower colour scheme - had navy dresses and they looked amazing!

I went to a wedding recently with all black bridesmaids dresses, I'd never have picked it myself, however they looked absolutely stunning and genuinely amazing, it made me reconsider black!

Bogggle · 05/05/2023 14:07

I had black bridesmaid dresses with white and green flowers and then sunflowers for a pop of colour. DH etc wore grey tweed suits with black ties and black shoes. I was a bit worried people would judge it but actually everyone said it looked really nice

hettiethehare · 05/05/2023 14:07

Navy definitely, especially with the creams/ golds and greens of your theme.

gettingoldisshit · 05/05/2023 14:22

Definitely navy, black is awful for a wedding.

Tippexy · 05/05/2023 14:23

Black is a mourning colour in the U.K. and so is not worn at weddings.

Hazelnuttella · 05/05/2023 14:24

I’d say Navy. Black doesn’t photograph very well.

Heroicallyfound · 05/05/2023 14:26

Navy. Black looks too funereal.

Lulu1919 · 05/05/2023 14:32

Navy much more flattering I feel ,and children look better in navy than black I think

Leapintothelightning · 05/05/2023 14:41

Navy is much nicer (and I stay this as a staunch "any colour as long as it's black!" clothes wearer). Solid black just feels too much at a wedding to me. I had navy bridesmaid dresses (husband's kilt is a blue mix so wanted something that goes) and my bouquet was white roses and thistles - with some greenery. Bridesmaids flowers didn't have thistles in them.

Going against the grain I vote black. My bridesmaids wore black and they looked fab.

AuntieStella · 05/05/2023 15:01

I'd go navy

If you hadn't mentioned the kilt, I'd have said you were my best friend as that is exactly how her wedding looked!

Navy for sure. Black and white is too stark.

Lcb123 · 05/05/2023 16:06

I'd say navy. But I'd then go grey suits, otherwise too much navy and black is too close.

NotMeNoNo · 05/05/2023 16:07

Navy suits almost everyone but many peoples colouring doesn't suit black

Stratocumulus · 05/05/2023 16:12

Black can be a challenging colour for some complexions.
Black is traditionally a colour of mourning in the UK.
Navy is classy and generally an easier, softer colour for most people’s colouring.

* I vote navy like lots of others on here! * 🥳
Whatever you choose, have a wonderful day.

Blackbyrd · 05/05/2023 16:15

Agree with navy, and the style of those dresses is lovely. Would suit anyone! The dress like your one is beautiful, you will look amazing

PlanningAhead2024 · 05/05/2023 16:41

Thanks everyone! I was thinking the navy as well, in the halter neck style. Husband did like the navy suits a bit more than the black, but he wants to let me pick. Problem is, I want to let him pick 🙈😂

He did try on some other suits, like a burgundy and a grey suit, but didn’t like any of those. Whereas the navy seemed to be like a second skin, and I know navy will look lovely on my bridesmaids too!

Also agree with the points on black being like a funeral - that’s the main reason I was iffy on them in the first place. I don’t think I could get passed the association, and it’s not really something I’d like on my wedding day 😬

I had navy bridesmaids - looked great.
I think black works but only with an evening /tux theme.
