Black or Navy Bridesmaid Dresses?

PlanningAhead2024 · 05/05/2023 13:46

As the title states, I’m looking for opinions on navy vs black bridesmaid dresses? Husband doesn’t mind if his suit is black or navy so final decision is whatever the bridesmaid dresses are as I’d like them to match the groomsmen.

Our wedding colour “theme” is very neutral with a lot of creams, golds, and greens (flower leaves mainly). Flowers are all white, and we’re having a late afternoon wedding so a lot of sunset pictures.

the white dress I’ve posted is very similar to my own just for reference.

Thanks!! Xx

@Leapintothelightning I had basically the same dress as you and flowers! Aside from I had bright pink flowers and the bridesmaids had cream with the thistle!

I vote navy. I think navy is very flattering but mainly I saw a tik tok the other day that opened with a line of bridesmaids in black dresses - I thought it was a funeral! Put me off black for a wedding, although could work for a more alternative vibe and / or a winter wedding.

The one minor regret I have about my wedding is that I listened to my mum who talked me out of navy bridesmaids dresses because they would be too dark and ‘wouldn’t photograph well’. We had light blue which was lovely but I LOVE the look of navy dresses with cream/white flowers, I think it’s so elegant and beautiful. I wouldn’t personally go black but navy, 👏

I think either colour could look lovely, it really depends on the style of dress. Just to add some balance to the debate, here's Sofia Ritchie in her black bridesmaid dress at her sister Sophia's recent wedding. I love the fact that brides no longer feel they have to dress their bridesmaids in dowdy clothing to ensure that they are the "star" of the day.

Slight tangent here, but are you telling me some parents called their dds Sofia and Sophia ? Hmm

I think that poster means Nicole Richie’s black dress at her sister Sofia’s wedding?! Lionel Riche’s daughters. She looked great but it’s definitely not a style that would look good on a non celeb so I would not take it as inspiration!

@UsingChangeofName , apologies for the confusion! This is an excellent example of why I should always proof read. Sofia was the bride and Nicole her sister / bridesmaid. I love the dress, it wasn't tight or revealing and the long length covers a multitude of sins,

Love the longer dresses in navy and your dress is fabulous have a wonderful day.

I found this on Pinterest and love it! I’d probably look for the navy to be a shade or two darker but I just think it’s so timeless

I definitely prefer navy. Think black can work eg New Year's Eve wedding but navy better.

Unequivocally navy. Black is just too much. Navy is elegant and suits more people's colouring and better with colour scheme
