Waisted dresses

At the grand age of 47 after lots of mistakes I seem to have figured out what suits me. I have a triangle shape with broadish shoulders compared with my waist and hips. I am petite and slim (size 6-8) - 5ft 2 with skinny long legs for my height, usually wear regular length jeans.

I need a dress with a defined waist - structured? The oversize voluminous kaftan dresses don't suit me nor do the straight up and down shapes or the ones that are A-line. I seem to be okay with midi length if it is not too long. Knee length or above knee is out of fashion these days I think and I feel frumpy in that length.

Would absolutely love some suggestions please S&B gurus!!

@greyhairnomorethank you for the reply on my lonely thread!
Shirt dresses are good! Has anyone seen any? I love the M&S dress you posted but suspect a little too much material for my frame, and I may need something neater fitting.

Seasalt used to regularly have dresses with waists and shirt dresses.

I am the same OP. I like a waist. In last years Jigsaw has served me well. I'm currently eyeing this one..

Back to the 1950s early 1960s then just prior to Mini skirts. Kay Kendall in Movies
Flower prints, just handy for this time of year.
Stand-up collars, petticoats to give body and shape to quite full skirts.
They didn't just hang. from your body.
There are still patterns for home sewing in collections.

Oh I love that! I have similar tastes to you, though being quite a bit taller I do suit the straight up and down styles (as long as they are slim fitted).

TheOrigRights · 25/04/2023 14:14

What's your budget and where are you looking to wear such dresses, work, day to day, going out, conquering the world?

Stumpedasatree · 25/04/2023 14:57

Thanks for all the suggestions which I really like. @TheOrigRights just super casual dresses, not work. Budget below £100 and ideally below £50.

I would have suggested Palava. They're not everyone's cup of tea as patterns are quirky but beautiful, natural materials , made in the UK, with waists but they're not in that budget.

I've got the one @greyhairnomore linked to but in the khaki. It's lovely and much nicer than the pics. I also struggle a bit with midi lengths - the hem on this is slightly handkerchief style(if that's the term) - so not straight across which seems to be more flattering.

Forever New have LOADS of dresses in this style and budget!

georgethegeranium456 · 25/04/2023 20:53

Boden Amelie dress is always a winner!

Or this one, that I've currently fallen in love with (and may have bought all three colours Blush) from George, of all places!

Sorry just seen you don't want knee length!

@Stumpedasatree Have you checked to see if wrap dresses work for you?
They usually have a defined waist
