Find me a fabulous bag (please!)

I’m in the mood for a new fabulous bag, but I am fussy and can’t find what I want. Budget is not at Chanel levels but happy to pay for something really special. My criteria:

  • probably black, but a nice soft kind of black rather than shiny/patent/likely to scratch. Open to a lighter more summery colour though
  • everyday rather than just evening (I have a couple of beautiful bags for evening already)
  • not too obvious a logo. I do like the Gucci Marmont style but the GGs are too much for my taste (and lifestyle if I’m honest!)
  • small-ish - I’m really short and don’t want a big bag
  • adjustable or short-ish strap that I can wear cross body. I tried on the Gucci Marmont camera bag and liked the style but the strap was just too long (and the GGs too obvious, as above!)

Any ideas? I’m in no rush so happy to just get some inspiration from you knowledgable people! Thank you 😊

Not in the style of the Marmont but what about the Celine Nano Luggage? At the higher end of your budget now but I got mine pre-loved for under 1k. It’s a really elegant, everyday bag.

Maybe the Gucci blondie?
Still does have quite a prominent logo but it's not as "obvious" as the marmont GGs. I love it in the off white

Last suggestion from me OP, Matt Fothergill has amazing bags, all beautiful. I have a wide based postman bag, and a bespoke one (black calf hide, lined with red pigskin- just gorgeous! He can make a bespoke bag for you too, eg say if you wanted a squishy Tenbury, but as a cross body, he will do that for you. I gave him an appalling sketch and dimensions and he made my perfect work bag for me. Thoroughly recommend!! http://www.mattfothergill.com/Products/Large+Handbags

Lots more for me to browse, thank you so much! The smaller version of the Whistles bag was actually on my radar already - it’s a beautiful style. I like the more unique bags suggested too - I think I probably lean towards more simpler styles but it’s good to open my mind to different ideas and get out of my comfort zone. Very grateful for all suggestions - I’ll need to set some proper time aside to work through them all and then maybe go and play with some in person to get the feel.

Did you get a bag in the end OP?

I'm shamelessly bumping the thread as I loved seeing everyone's suggestions!

OneFrenchEgg · 29/04/2023 17:58

Coach? I love them, and the little stamps you can get to personalise them.

How about this acne studios bag?

Ooh my thread got bumped! Thank you for all the extra suggestions. I have actually ordered the Aspinal Ella bag to try but I think it may be too smooth for me - I really wanted more of a pebbled/grainy leather. Will wait and see when it arrives though as I do like the style. Bizarrely, the more bags I look at, the more I like my Polene Beri bag and am thinking perhaps I just stick with that style. I really need to go and browse in somewhere like Selfridges and see if anything jumps out!

Quick update (if anyone is still interested 🤣). I’ve received the aspinal Ella bag and it’s almost right but not quite - the size/shape/strap are perfect but it’s just a bit too bulky for me 😭. Plus it’s almost TOO plain. Back to the search!

Forgot to say thank you for the extra suggestions. Not so keen on the shape of the Celine I’m afraid, and the Gucci blondie is a bit too square. However this has caught my eye - don’t know if I missed it last time I looked. Not sure if the branding is still too obvious though…

@GoShorty hmm have you looked at the Gucci Attaché? Very versatile and fabulous without being overly logo-ed.

Oh - I just looked at the Kate Spade link and I actually have a Kate Spade bag already that is very similar 🙈! It’s beautiful. I think I’m after a more casual version that’s still special but not too obvious 🤪. Not that I’m fussy at all! I hadn’t seen that Gucci either, thank you. The colours are a bit too much for me but the leather looks lovely. I’ll keep looking. There’s no rush, as to be honest I probably won’t be using a black bag again until autumn, so I have lots of time to find the perfect one! Loving all the links though.

Browsing the Guccis again - this is new I think? Not sure how I feel about the logo. It’s more subtle than the GG but is it a bit cheap looking? (Not that it IS cheap!)

And a few people have suggested the blondie. I wasn’t keen at first but I think this is growing on me…

My aunt has two smaller older Fendi bags which are soft and slouchy with minimal hardware, ones small, other is a bit bigger.

I’ve got the Loewe puzzle mini in black and I love it and considering getting another in a more neutral colour.

It’s good to see other brands and I think in future I’ll go for some of the more niche French brands. Have got too many bags and considering selling some. Quality of Mulberry has gone down a lot in recent years. My aunt has several from 2000s and I’ve got one (forget style) and when we went to Kilver Court where they laid or used to make them, definitely not same quality.

I’m not keen on the logo and too visible for me but I don’t like logos on bags or only barely visible though I’ve broken that rule in the past!

GoShorty · 27/05/2023 20:34

Small update if anyone is still interested 😂. I’ve still not found ‘the one’ but I did see that Harrods of all places had a 10% off deal today, so I’ve ordered a Loewe mini gate bag to try as it doesn’t look like I’ll get near the shops any time soon. Bit worried it’s going to be too small but I like the style and have heard good things about Loewe quality. Will update when it arrives!

Was also very tempted to order the mini puzzle to try, but I can’t see if the shoulder/cross body strap is adjustable- it looks quite long from the pictures 😕
