A Summer alternative to wide leg side stripe trousers

This year I started a new job in a new school and my office is freezing. So I switched from my normal tights and dresses to M&S side striped trousers, merino jumper and trainers (don't need to be v smart).

This has also suited me as I've gone onto HRT, put on weight around my stomach and breasts and it's all been v forgiving.

But I can't figure out a Summer version.

One that doesn't show my knicker line, is flattering on my stomach - I'm a 10, but also spend a lot of time in period pants 😔

Is there something I'm missing here? I've loved my winter 'uniform' of three pairs of trousers and five tops which have kept my thinking to a minimum and have kept me looking current and comfy.

I don't do floral. Or midi dresses.

M&S side striped trousers but the lighter weight ones. I have the thicker ones (the more expensive ones) and the thinner ones.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 30/03/2023 18:16

Which are the thinner ones? I have grey dogtooth with a blue stripe, navy x2 the navy ones are heavier but I can't imagine wearing the grey ones when it's June?

The office which is frigid in January is likely to be tropical by May as its on the corner of the south facing part of the school.

I wear wide legged linen trousers (generally M&S), a long sleeveless blouse (H&M usually have a few) and a light cardigan in the summer generally. Usually with white trainers.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 30/03/2023 18:30

@mynameiscalypso I will have a look, one of the things I like about the side stripe trousers is the wide waist band and the lack of gathering effect at the back around the waistband.

Maybe I need to splurge some money on good quality ones.

What about some cropped palazzo pants or culottes. They come in loss of different patterns and are really comfy.

CatOnTheChair · 30/03/2023 18:39

Echoing the linen trousers - you can get elasticated waist ones. Personally, I just wear black trousers all year round....
I wear v necked jumpers in winter, and half decent teeshirts in summer - with cardi for cooler mornings.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 30/03/2023 18:46

@Ilovecrumpetseveryday palazzo pants a good idea. If I can find ones that are just below the knee. Mid calf doesn't work for me in any kind of clothing including gym leggings!

This is the first time in my life I've worn trousers on a daily basis. Previously I might have worn them once in a while.

Thank you so much for all the replies!

I think footwear is important too. Do you want to keep wearing trainers or can/do you wear flats/sandals/whatever?

lindyloo57 · 30/03/2023 19:07

@Moredarkchocolateplease hi, can you link the trouser from m&s, I just took alook but so many to choose from, I like the elastic waist which doesn't bunch up at the back.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 30/03/2023 19:11

@mynameiscalypso yes I'll be wearing trainers. I work in exams so significant amounts of running up and down stairs. Ankles need to be cool though as legs and feet swell in the summer.

I have three pairs like this. They are brilliant.

These trousers are the epitome of smart-casual. We've designed them with wide legs, featuring striking side stripes and neat pintuck seams. Get the perfect fit by pulling in the drawstring around the elasticated high waist. M&S Collection: easy-to-wear...

Cullote/pallazo type trousers and a plain t-shirt. Monki serves me well for this look.

UndercoverCop · 30/03/2023 19:37

I've just bought these and plan to wear them similarly to the way they are shown here

Wide legged trousers, I got some last year in a linen/cotton mix, I think from Selected Femme.

You could also try a pleated skirt or satin/silk midi skirt, I tried on a plain navy one yesterday but not sure where it was from.

Put wide legged jersey cotton trousers into google and see what comes up. Years ago I had jersey cotton navy with white stripe trousers that were so comfy and had a drawstring waist, this was in my early 20s though!

Last summer I just wore Fitflop black patent ballet pumps or a shoe with a heel.

lightningstrikes · 30/03/2023 19:44

I've just bought wide leg linen trousers from Next. They have a wide elastic band, but a tidier button closing on the front. Really comfy round the waist. They do a tapered version as well.

They're the ones without a drawstring waist and have a wee zip at the ankle. They're not a heavy jersey. Hang on, I'll have a look at mine. (I have the navy/white and the black/gold) from last spring/summer.

So1invictus · 30/03/2023 19:49

They're a polyester and viscose mix rather than a jersey. M&S Collection. I'm not sure now if they are the £39.50 ones or the £35 ones. I do know it's been on my list of things to do to buy a pair in every colour way for this summer - wore them not only at work, but in Madrid and Lisbon in temperatures of 35 degrees plus.

minipie · 30/03/2023 19:50

How tall are you? I look terrible in mid calf too because I have short legs. However the benefit is that all these “cropped” trousers are ankle length on me and look much better (IMO) than the length they’re supposed to be.

As well as the trousers suggestions, I would add shirt dresses in linen or cotton. (You have to hunt a bit as so many are man made). Somehow a dress always looks smarter than skirt & top and it’s a lot easier to put together! Get some comfy canvas shoes or loafers which could go with dresses or trousers. You could add cotton cycling shorts under if that would feel more secure.

ButIWantedToBeYourValentine · 30/03/2023 19:55

I'm in a school office too and the heat can be unbearable but I'm still having to look "dressed"! Eg no strapped vests...
Cropped linen trousers from Matalan; come in black or navy, or striped. Plus a sleeveless blouse type top to prevent sweaty armpits! Matalan is my saviour for all of these, or look on Vinted and filter the brands you like for cheaper clothes!

ButIWantedToBeYourValentine · 30/03/2023 19:55

Meant to say the trousers are all pull on elastic waisted too x

Gingerwarthog · 30/03/2023 20:24

Robell trousers (loads of colours) - cropped - with ballet flat, white shirt and jacket (cropped).

These are the thinner ones and they’ll probably get them in more colours. I have the navy with white stripe too and the khaki with black stripe.
