What do I need to make my hair like this.......

I have shoulder length hair (somewhere between the first and second photo) and want to put a very slight wave in it like in the pics below.

What is the easiest way for me to do this bearing in mind I am bordering on incompetent when it comes to hair? I had long hair until last week and I have NEVER managed to curl my own hair. But this isn't curls, it's like a very slight wave. I have straighteners but failed to make them do anything other than straighten. What implement do I need for a fool proof way to get this look? And extra points for an Amazon link!

Also what products to use to to keep the wave, I have annoyingly fine hair that requires washing every day 😡. Again recommendation (that aren't too pricy, I have soooo many hair products that have been disasters!)

You can do that with your straighteners. Have a look on YouTube. It looks like it has just one or one and a half twists in it.
Try salt spray for texture and hold.

MrsPerfect12 · 28/03/2023 20:15

Look up the beach waver. It will do that for you. It's super easy.

WingBingo · 28/03/2023 20:17

You can use tongs if you curl half the hair and not the ends.

NormaTheWife · 28/03/2023 20:41

KMS Thermashape shaping blow dry spray. Use your tongs then - as someone said there are loads of tutorials online. Leave each "curl" until the end than slightly separate.

NormaTheWife · 28/03/2023 20:42

Oh and alternate the curls - one away from face, the next towards face etc. You can see they have done this in photo 1.

OhVicIveFallen · 28/03/2023 21:18

Bloody hell, I've just tried curling with a straightener and now I look like worzel gummidge! They make it look so easy on you tube! Think I'll stick to my very straight hair 😆

There's a fine line at where you should start and stop the curl.

OhVicIveFallen · 28/03/2023 21:22

Yeah I've got like a bump where I've started the curl near my scalp, looks shit 🤣 also the Straighteners kept opening as I turned them 😬

I did a training session with my hairdresser on this and it is not easy. Takes lots of practice. What you can try is put your hair in the straightener then wrap your hair around it holding onto the end of the hair and pulling. A wand might be better for you.

Pineapplemonkey · 28/03/2023 21:36

Have just watched a few YouTube videos and they make it look so easy. Will give it a go with my straighteners tomorrow and see if I can make some vague waves that are neither frizzy or poodle like, I’m just so cackhanded!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone

It's a similar motion to making ribbons curl on a present with a ruler or pair of scissors, just with an edge that isn't so sharp and less pressure because the heat does the job. The tension is similarly scaled down.

Or just wash then rough dry and scrunch it up as you give it a blast with a hairdryer, finishing off with cool setting as each bit begins to wave more (styling product/seasalt spray optional).

MaltedCow · 29/03/2023 15:55

I'd use a wand rather than straighteners, I just cannot get the hang of straightener curls. Medium barrel tong/ wand curl vertically leave them to set then use a wide comb/ your fingers to loosen the curls to waves.

JumpToRecipe · 29/03/2023 16:05

My hairdresser does this for me with straighteners. I have never got the knack at home. She has to do the curl very tight and I leave the salon looking like Shirley Temple because my fine hair simply can’t hold a curl and drops almost immediately. Unfortunately it sounds like your hair may be similar!

Rainbowshit · 30/03/2023 04:00

I use this:BaByliss Soft Waves https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07JL81TNR?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

Take largish sections and wrap round and hold for 20secs. The key thing is to hold the end out and don't wrap it so you get the effect shown in your pictures.

Wrap the next section the opposite way round to the first and continue round the head.

It needs to look quite tightly curled to begin with and then left to cool and then brush through with your fingers.

Rainbowshit · 30/03/2023 04:04

Chloelovetoshop has a tutorial in the Instagram highlights called hair tonging.

Mamabear48 · 30/03/2023 18:39

A beach waver pretty cheap on amazon. To keep them in I would honestly try holding out washing your hair for a couple of days and using dry shampoo it will hold much longer. On freshly washed hair in my opinion falls out super quick

menopausalbloat · 30/03/2023 18:40

Just buy a pair of cheap tongs and watch a few tutorials.

JackHackettsMac · 30/03/2023 19:09

It might be worthwhile booking an appointment for a hair styling 1:1 training session where they can work with your hair and show you how to achieve a couple of particular looks. Maybe beach waves for a casual style and then how to style it a bit more dressed up for more formal occasions.

They'll also recommend products suited to your hair type and the style you want to maintain.

Lpmum51 · 30/03/2023 20:55

Try this it’s ace, I am rubbish at anything to do with hair & my daughter is a hair dresser & told me to get this

TenterfieldSaddler · 30/03/2023 23:00

Following shamelessly as I have dead straight fine hair and suffer from an inability to style it with straighteners too. Which beach waver do people recommend? There are loads of different things when I search that on Amazon.

Horses4 · 31/03/2023 07:36

The barrel curler as above. I have a Wylera one but they are all kind of the same. The lower heat, low time setting produces waves. I have thick hair and no skills and I love this curler, first time in 43 years I have achieved curls!

CosyCoffee · 31/03/2023 08:23

I am the most clumsy cack-handed person but I manage to get this result with straighteners. For me the key was getting a really good pair of straighteners (Cloud 9) and practice.

My tips are, style each side using the opposite hand so your arm is going over your head, and leave the ends out. When cool comb through with a really wide tooth comb or fingers and finish with some oil.
