I've got lots of broochs, some handed down from my Nana others I've picked up on Ebay, nic nac type shops. I wear them on jackets, coats, pinned to bags and belts and on a plain scarf. I think i wear them cos my Mum always has.

CountessDracula · 12/02/2008 19:56

Yes I have quite a few vintage or vintage style ones, as well as a couple of cheapo Accessorise ones. I wear them in a very 80s way on the lapel of a suit jacket, or on belts or on the tie bit on cardigans as Lennygirl says. I also quite like them on the front pocket of jeans, although again this is very 80s-ish I know.

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 20:03

i wear them all the time.

i have TONS of vintage ones that were my grandmother's or given to me by MIL and an antique cameo.

i wear them strung on velvet ribbons as necklaces to match outfits, on jumpers on my left shoulder, to pin my big shawl - i usually use a kilt pin for that because it's a heavy wool shawl or to secure my scarf.

i even use them to secure cardis and shrugs instead of buttons.

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 20:05

I've just them to secure ruched up sleeves, pin up a baggy tshirt on one side, to secure the slit on a skirt i felt was slitted up too high, on shoes even.

janeite · 12/02/2008 20:39

Am liking the sleeves idea!

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 20:43

works best with a three-quarter length sleeve, jan, pinned up into a shorter sleeve about the elbow.

i have a couple of shrugs i've use them on and a couple of jackets misssing buttons.

try them on ribbons as necklaces, too.

i've even worn them over my ponytail, back when i had really long hair.

I have several, and I always have one on my coat. I wear them with scarves as well, or on a plain jumper.

I really love your idea of putting them on ribbons to wear as necklaces, expat - sounds lovely.

rantinghousewife · 12/02/2008 20:47

Yes, I wear mine in a fucky way too!

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 20:48

i have a lot. a lot of costume jewellry in general - my mother's mother loved it and kept all of it and my mother has so much real jewellry she doesn't use anything her mother left her, now did my sister want it, so it's all mine!

MIL has a load, too, some of which she's already given me to pass to the DDs, but they're not getting it until they're old enough to appreciate it.

i loved it in the 80s, when baroque came back in, and people wore ropes and ropes of fake pearls.

kindersurprise · 12/02/2008 20:48

I just bought one to go on my hat. The hat is tweedy cap thing and I was worried it looked to masculine. Bought a sparkly brooch and it looks lovely.

Folk here look at me as if Ì am mad though. No sense of style.

Must have a rake through my mum's jewelery box.

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 20:50

just fold the ribbon in half and pull the fold through a space in the brooch, so you have a loop. then thread the two loose ends through the loop and cinch down. then adjust the length round your neck.

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 20:50

snap! i put them on hats, too!

Ouch!!!

kindersurprise · 12/02/2008 20:55

I always wondered how to wear them as necklaces.

2nd new things I have learnt on MN today

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 20:56

you can also thread the ribbon the same way around the pin bit. fasten the pin and then thread the ribbon through.
