Does anyone still wear ballet flats?

I need an alternative to ankle boots and trainers, for transitional weather! I've tried loafers, but I find them really uncomfortable. Brogues make my feet look massive! It's unfortunately not Birkenstock weather yet. :(

Any suggestions appreciated! I just want simple, flat shoes to go with slim leg or straight jeans. Perhaps a low-heeled court shoe? Would that look weird with jeans? I just dunno anymore!

Do grown women really pay that much attention to what's in fashion? I'm surprised. As I said before I've been wearing them for years but really surprised how much fashion influences peoples footwear choice.

blebbleb · 24/03/2023 03:55

Saying that I bought a recent pair of ballet flats from a pensioner and I'm only in my 30s so what do I know about style Grin

It‘s hard not to when what’s available is based on it. I’m not embarrassed to follow it though. Not slavishly but tastes change and it’s fun to see. I’ve always liked ballet flats though, usually some with a bit of cushioning. Oddly I find trainers uncomfortable and faffy to put on - I think I’m defective!

WandaWonder · 24/03/2023 04:32

I tried but they were terrible for me, I don't care about looks I just had nothing but trouble with them

AuntLucy · 24/03/2023 05:34

The fitflop ones have proper rubber soles, and are very comfy. Size down, if you are between sizes.

Yes, I only recently released they were back in fashion. I've been wearing them for the last 15 years.

They never went away. I buy mine from Pretty Ballerina.

Fit flop ballet flats with arch support, the traditional ones will destroy your feet.

When were ballet flats NOT available? Russell and Bromley, Office, Hobbs, LK Bennet, Office always had them. Pretty Ballerina and French Sole don't sell anything else.

I've never found a pair to fit me, think I have big toes! Does anyone else have this problem?

namechangeforthisbleep · 24/03/2023 06:28

I think they look at bit nerdy teacher like. But each to their own

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 24/03/2023 06:40

Don’t buy cheap ones. Or if you do, buy those special discreet socks to wear inside, to prevent sweaty feet. A couple of people I know are betrothed to them but they have the smelliest feet in them. 😬

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 24/03/2023 07:31

I recently bought a pair from Cocorose and they are as comfortable as slippers and also come beautifully packaged, which I am such a sucker for Blush. They are foldable, have a little travel bag and the company say they plant a tree with every order.

Mutabiliss · 24/03/2023 07:39

I've always worn them. They're comfy for me and I prefer shoes to be quite delicate, hate big clumpy shoes and boots.

That's not to say all ballet flats are comfortable, of course. Some are instruments of torture. They basically have to be comfy when you first try them on, otherwise no go.

ShyMaryEllen · 24/03/2023 07:48

I wear them when I'm not wearing Docs or sandals, and have done so for years and years. I am super trendy and known locally as a fashion icon, so take it from me, they are perfectly acceptable.

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 24/03/2023 07:52

If your willing to wear flimsy ballet flats that offer no support or protection from the weather, just wear your birkenstocks.

TheChosenTwo · 24/03/2023 07:57

I haven’t worn them for years and haven’t noticed them when out shopping so wasn’t aware they’d made a come back!
I didn’t really get on too well with them as I walk a lot and they never lasted very long, plus with no arch support I think they were adding to my back problems. They also don’t really go with what I wear now so I probably won’t be buying them again but they can look nice! Hate all the bows that used to be on them though.

Yep, I'm in my 50s and so I guess I qualify as a 'grown woman'. I'm interested in fashion and what people are wearing. That's why I'm on a 'Style and Beauty' thread.

ImAvingOops · 24/03/2023 08:35

I never really stopped wearing mine, when the weather was okay for them. I still think they look pretty - as much as I adore the comfort of trainers, ballet flats are a lot smarter.

Haha, this! 😂What's so wrong with it?

I didn't say they weren’t available. I was replying to the fashion comment.

The title of the thread is "does anyone still wear ballet flats"

Might as well ask "does anyone still wear knickers" - ballet flats are a standard, staple item.

Oh for goodness sake. It’s a conversation. Whatever.

Doesthepopeshitinthewoods · 24/03/2023 11:28

@blebbleb seeing as ‘fashion’ filters down and influences what is actually sold in shops, it stands to reason that we’re all influenced by it.

Did you meander onto the wrong board? Maybe the thread was trending.
