Hair oil or similar to stimulate growth?

NotAnotherBathBomb · 16/03/2023 12:34

I'm looking for advice/experience from anyone who's used a product applied directly to hair/scalp that promotes growth, that you'd recommend.

I tried hair gummies which did cause thicker growth, but it affected it all over Confused I have PCOS so already have issues with hair growing in places where it shouldn't, and am having laser done on my face, so felt I was throwing money away on treatment as the hair was growing back much quicker.

I used to live in the Caribbean and had thick long hair, since moving to the UK my hair has fallen and thinned. I'm aware that's also a side effect of PCOS, but I had PCOS in the Caribbean and much healthier-looking hair.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

Rosemary oil. Didn't work for me set off my eczema unfortunately. Biotin gummies? Finasteride and minoxidil based products

I might be able to help you here!

I've been rubbing rosemary oil into my scalp twice a week for the past few weeks. It's been all over TikTok so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Went for a haircut this morning and my stylist asked me what I'd been doing differently as there lots of little hairs sprouting out. So it seems to be doing something.

Omg ok. A TikTok is what prompted me to make this post 😂 but I wanted to hear actual reviews from people, of course influencers will say a product is amazing when they're being paid.

Ok I will take a look at rosemary oil!

It cost less than a tenner so I though I didn't have much to lose if it was all rubbish!

Pinktruffle · 16/03/2023 16:08

@MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake would you mind sharing which Rosemary oil you bought? I've lost so much hair postpartum, I also have PCOS and nearly I'm about to turn 40 and I'm worried the hair loss might be permanent, it's really getting me down.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 16/03/2023 16:10

I have pcos, got rosemary oil off amazon, mixed with squalene and use a bonnet. Literally so much hair after a few months.

usernother · 16/03/2023 16:12

Isn't it just the rubbing and stimulation of your scalp that encourages hair growth rather than what is rubbed into it. I cannot see how rosemary oil could make hair grow.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 16/03/2023 16:19

Dunno, I don’t rub mine in, I put a pipette full on my scalp, pop a bonnet on and go to bed.

Rosemary oil has the same effect as minoxidil 🤷🏻‍♀️

It was this one by Nature Spell. I bought mine from Amazon although it seems to be out of stock there at the moment. Apparently you're not supposed to put neat rosemary oil on your hair but this one is already diluted with a carrier oil. I massage about a tablespoon's worth into my scalp and leave it for a couple of hours before washing it out. I do this twice a week.

Pinktruffle · 16/03/2023 16:44

@usernother I regularly oil my hair with other oils and it doesn't stimulate growth alone so want to give rosemary a try. Anecdotally there seems to be a difference with Rosemary oil

Thank you @MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake , I'll get myself some. Great that it's ready diluted!

The Ordinary Hair Growth Serum is also good. I've used it along my hairline, but you do have to keep it up!

Nioxin Anti Hair Loss Spray is also good and easy to use.

@defi - that’s interesting. My DD has been using rosemary oil on her hair and has recently developed an eczema-like rash on her face. I hadn’t thought about it possibly being linked to the rosemary oil…

NevieSticks · 16/03/2023 19:11

Champo hair serum

ifyougochasingrabbits · 16/03/2023 19:16

Rosemary oil but needs diluting - I do about 10 drops in half a small spray bottle with water and shake it up til it goes a whitey cloudy colour

I had bad hair loss end of the year ...I'm not sure if was to do with covid as had had covid a few months before, or if I'm getting to the fucking bloody perimenopause...but it was awful 😢

So late December I started taking iron tablets (florisene), got a vitb12 jab and started taking vitamin D. I also use champo shampoo although only started that about a month ago. I also have been using diluted rosemary oil every couple of days as an over night treatment. I try and get H to give me a head rub as well sometimes

My hair loss has now dramatically slowed down over the last month or 2. although I'm sure I'm still losing a little more than I used to - Altho I'm a very anxious person who does tend to obsess over stuff so I might not be !

Champo hair serum

Oooh is this good, I use the champo shampoo and I don't know if it's a coincidence but my hair loss slowed down at the same time I started with it

HuggingtheHRT · 16/03/2023 19:22

Not a lotion per se, but I started drinking 2oz pomegranate juice a day a few months back to help with cholesterol levels and my hair is looking amazing. Have had very thin hair for ages with lots of visible scalp. All the baldy bits have totally filled in....

birdshavingabath · 16/03/2023 19:24

be careful with rosemary oil, I have endometriosis and it triggers it to be much worse! hopefully you guys will be ok with it, but of course make sure you use it with a carrier oil. Most essential oils are hormone disruptors so should be used with caution (same with peppermint which is apparently also good for hair growth!). Just a diluted drop is enough to set me off!

take a supplement daily - with B vitamins - the hair, skin, nails one by holland and barrett is good.

I am currently trying onion juice (!!!). I realise this sounds completely nuts but I've tried everything else and this is one thing that I have read works well in one study that was carried out - and it's not triggering my endo, phew! I am rubbing into hairline overnight then washing out in the morning a few times a week. Too early to tell but will report back (only trying it a couple of weeks so far). Obv this has the side effect of smelling like onions overnight but it's not been too bad.

Massage and scalp stimulation meant to be really good. As is hanging your head upside down as blood rushes to the scalp delivering the nutrients.

Get your iron levels checked at the GP!

Try to avoid shampoo where possible esp with SLS in it. I now wash with chickpea flour (works well!) mixture, bar shampoo and co-wash with conditioner, I've cut down a great deal with the harsh shampoo chemicals as far as I can.

I realise some of this sounds completely bonkers but my hair has improved a lot over the last 6 months.

birdshavingabath · 16/03/2023 19:26

Also often hair loss around hairline is linked to higher levels of male hormones, so if you can balance your hormones better you may experience some regrowth. I'm trying to lose weight as I've noticed when I lose weight I have better hair growth. I think it can be linked to the liver or something (hence a lot of alcoholics can lose their hair).

Donnashair · 16/03/2023 19:38

I have had loads of problems with thinning hair. It’s coming back and here’s what I did.

Oil my scalp twice a week. With a rosemary oil. Not the natures spell one. I use hair syrups growsmary. Don’t use loads. Massage it in for 5 minutes.

On one oiling I put some in my ends. Not loads. Next time I use Phillip Kingsley elastizer on the ends.

For the poster asking Rosemary has shown some positives results similar to minoxidil. It’s not massively been researched, but what there is, is promising. Though with minoxidil, you (usually) use it more often than Rosemary so that has to be taken into account.

Once a week I boil fresh rosemary and a cinnamon stick in water for 5 mins. I then keep it in the fridge and spray it on my roots every morning, the. Blow dry the roots. Not everyone can tolerate loads of Rosemary so you may not want to do this.

Hair gummies (boots own or Aldi do some really good ones when you can get them.

every night I used the ordinary multi peptide scalp treatment. It feels greasy when you put it on but is gone in the morning. then wrap my hair and put a satin bonnet on.

I only use a wooden comb or bamboo brush.

It’s a lot of faffing. But my hair is loads thicker. In the top 8 inch of my hair. I am waiting until it’s a bit longer and then chopping. I couldn’t even wear my hair up at one point as you could see so much scalp at the side.

If your hair was fine in the Caribbean, you may fine the water in your area is causing problems. In which case a water filter on the shower may help.

My3cents1 · 16/03/2023 20:14

OP, can I ask what area you live?

Lycanthropology · 16/03/2023 22:14

I don't know about any oils or shampoos, but I started taking high dose vitamin B complex, Vit D, omega 3, magnesium and iron about a year ago. I also started exercising more.

My thinning, menopausal hair has turned into a thick floof!

I think iron in particular is very helpful.
