Hair oil or similar to stimulate growth?

NotAnotherBathBomb · 16/03/2023 12:34

I'm looking for advice/experience from anyone who's used a product applied directly to hair/scalp that promotes growth, that you'd recommend.

I tried hair gummies which did cause thicker growth, but it affected it all over Confused I have PCOS so already have issues with hair growing in places where it shouldn't, and am having laser done on my face, so felt I was throwing money away on treatment as the hair was growing back much quicker.

I used to live in the Caribbean and had thick long hair, since moving to the UK my hair has fallen and thinned. I'm aware that's also a side effect of PCOS, but I had PCOS in the Caribbean and much healthier-looking hair.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks

my hairdresser recommended Montibello products. have been using the shampoo and serum for about 8 weeks and have new hair growth.

Isn't it just the rubbing and stimulation of your scalp that encourages hair growth rather than what is rubbed into it. I cannot see how rosemary oil could make hair grow.

This study found it does

What worked for me was firstly really upping my protein levels . That stopped the excess hair fall. What filled in the thinning parts at the front was the ordinary hair serum. I started using the ordinary at least a year since I managed to stop the initial hair fall.

Oh great post, I seem to be thinning at the one side which I thought was my imagination but its definitely thinning. Gutted. I'm on HRT low dose and take a vit b complex and vit d. I will have a look at the Aldi gummies when im in tomorrow, failing that I'll try the rosemary oil. Xx

Don't know why my reply has been hidden its nothing bad 🤣

Great post OP. I added to my post partum hair loss by wearing v part wigs very carelessly and managed to pull out some hair right at my center parting! Lots of research tells me that the answer to hair growth is rosemary oil, Jamaican black castor oil and pumpkin oil with daily scalp massage. I bought a hair growth oil containing these oils from Wolfmen Skin and have been using it for a week before using my head massager. Will wait and see!

Btw be warned that Wolfmen Skin has terrible service if you do decide to order from them.

Castor oil is supposed to work

Castor oil is supposed to work

I've had it on good authority that it's great for eyebrows I didn't think of using it for my hair. Maybe because it's thick oil. Could add rosemary oil to that. X

I became obsessed with growing my hair for yeaaaars so definitely consider myself a somewhat expert now! It reaches half way down my back now, so something has clearly worked.

  • Stimulation is the best thing you can do. I've got a little plastic head massager (bought for like a pound in a random shop) and it sits next to the sofa, so pretty much every night I use it to give myself a scalp massage. It's basically a small brush. Started as a "self care" thing and now I do it cause it just feels incredible. I also brush my hair out with my tangle teezer every night before bed, then flip my hair and use a bamboo brush on my scalp for 10 mins. This means you get more blood flow to your scalp because of the inversion of your head and stimulation of your scalp.
  • Rosemary water! Oils are great and I use them once a week, but they're a faff. I boil dried rosemary (leave to simmer for 20ish mins) and put it in a spray bottle and spray my whole scalp morning and night. It doesn't leave much of a trace, so you can just style your hair as normal once dry. Because it's easy, it means you do it way more often than something more hardcore like using oils.
  • Oil hair mask once a week. I tend to spray my ends with a leave-in conditioner, then coat everything (scalp included) in an oil (I'm using amla at the moment and I really like it) and then leave in for as long as I fancy. Sometimes 2+ hours, sometimes overnight.
  • Daily biotin supplement. I've got a cherry-flavoured one you suck. I just leave it next to the bathroom sink so I always remember to take it.

I've been doing all of the above pretty consistently for a few months and I have loads of baby hair and thicker hair. It's grown faster than it usually does, but mainly it just looks a whole lot better. Whatever you choose to do, stay consistent! That's the key!

Has anyone mentioned a scalp brush? It helps with my hair growth.

@Lheuredubebe what's a bamboo brush? I have one of these massagers I bought to try the curly girl method would that do as a scalp stimulator maybe? I'll get some rosemary in the shopping and boil it. For an oil mask I don't want to buy anything expensive so would castor oil do? And do you just wash it out with your usual shampoo? I did have an actual masssager with nodules but its disappeared 😔

When it comes to piling, different oils suit different people, hair types and scalps. Castor is no good for me, but dds hair is fab with it.

I think the natures spell rosemary is fairly well priced. Hair syrup is good but a bit more expensive. But lasts ages.

Donnashair · 17/03/2023 17:20

Oiling. Not piling

Mumsanetta · 17/03/2023 17:23

Has anyone tried Fable & Mane products? They do an Amla oil and some others.

birdshavingabath · 17/03/2023 17:29

castor oil is horrifically sticky and gloopy. I personally didn't get on with it due to that fact.

I had Holi roots. I found it expensive. It was good. But not better than other cheaper ones

BigButtons · 17/03/2023 17:34

What works will depend on what is going on. If you are not biotin deficient than supplements won’t work for example.
mine was hormone related in peri- HRT didn’t stop it but extra protein did. I chanced upon this quite by accident- doing weights to build muscle I decided to take a protein shake a day. After years of increasing hair fall it stopped within a couple of weeks of upping the protein and is still good.

Thanks for this detailed advice.

Also thanks to everyone who's replied!

I ordered some rosemary oil off Amazon which arrived today and have massages into scalp (diluted).

I have ADHD and sticking to routines is hard for me, but I'm going to keep it simple for now hopefully going to keep at it.
