What jacket do you wear with a halter neck?

Hi all
I have a couple of halter necks and struggle with what to wear on top.
For context, these are for weddings/other such dos and a massive apple shaped body.
I ended up with a cardigan last time and still not convinced about the silhouette.

What jacket do you wear with a halter neck?

Tbh the whole point of a halter neck is the open back! If you’re going to need a jacket isn’t it the wrong dress to choose?

emmaliz · 05/03/2023 11:23

I would wear a blazer or if too hot a light kimono type jacket, think that might look nicer than a cardigan

I get your point. But in winter. In the north?

I did try a few blazers but felt it was a whole lot of material on top with the closed neck.
Will try again
Thanks

If it’s warm enough for me to wear a halter neck, I wouldn’t be needing a jacket! I’ve only once had a halter neck dress and wore it to a wedding abroad-no cover up needed!

Marshmallowmountain · 05/03/2023 11:29

A round neck dress coat or cropped jacket

mynameiscalypso · 05/03/2023 11:29

I think the things that look best are denim jackets and leather biker jackets but not sure how wedding appropriate that is!

SurpriseSparDay · 05/03/2023 11:33

But a lightweight halter neck dress is by definition Spring /Summer wear. I do understand you might want to wear your favourite thing - but in purely style terms it’s as unreasonable as wanting to wear a bikini to a Winter event.

No one can suggest the ideal jacket for a dress that is specifically made to be worn without one.

A shawl , sort of pashmina . Then you can drape it . Jigsaw have nice cashmere ones . Or a velvet one .

OMGitsnotgood · 05/03/2023 11:34

I don't understand people saying 'why wear a halter neck if you need a jacket'z Surely it's obvious that there are times where you need to be warmer (eg outside while wedding photos are taken; sat at the table at a function if the room is cool) and times when you are plenty warm enough (if you're dancing or if they turn the heating up).

My point was, that if there there were times when it was going to be colder, then I wouldn’t be choosing to wear that particular dress-I’d choose one with straps that looks better with a jacket!

My halter neck dress looked fab for a boiling hot summer island wedding. I knew it would be hot all day and all evening. I also knew it would have looked crap on me with a jacket over the top, so wouldn’t have worn it to a wedding where it was colder.

It is this point. Baltic venue for the ceremony. Warm, heated venue for the 'do'.
Thanks for the suggestions though

Definitely a blazer. Would look stunning.

I don't really know what MN means by a "blazer" but the word makes me think of school uniform or Henley Regatta.

That dress needs a short, fitted, cropped jacket or bolero which is no longer than waist length or even shorter.Or just a shawl.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/03/2023 12:37

An open pale-coloured jacket I think. Although it would depend what happened with the armholes — you don't want a triangle of chest/arm between the dress and the jacket.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/03/2023 12:39

I have a nice bolero/cropped cardigan, that I wear a lot with dresses for extra warmth but I'd be concerned with a halter neck that it might not be long enough at the back.

In that case, I’d go for a lightweight dress but one with straps and then a pretty bolero. I honestly think any sort of blazer or cardigan would totally ruin the lines of that dress

Something like this one 👍

Leather jacket in the winter - denim in the summer

See, I wouldn’t wear either denim or leather jackets to a wedding!

paradyning · 05/03/2023 21:13

Neither would I.
But I like that blazer shake collar. I did try that before but will try again.
Thanks all

It's too long for that dress.

Depends how tall you are and where it hits on the body. Also with a good set of heels it will look lush

Well, if you live in a mixed climate you may need something to cover you in colder areas of the venue or when travelling, however you will end up spending allot of time without the sweater/jacket/shawl in the warmer areas during the event, sometimes those areas get too warm. It's just to keep warm when temporarily exposed to a cooler area of the venue and/or while travelling to and from the venue/different venues and/or if you just happen to get cold. Even in warmer climates people can get cold. For example, if a cool breeze is coming through... you know, like from an open doorway, or window, or an AC unit. What about the evening when the air cools in the summer as the sunsets? If you have never gotten cold from that perhaps you wouldn't understand, but it helps to have something to quickly remove and put on as necessary to warm up. It doesn't mean you will wear it the whole time, you might not end up wearing it at all, but I wouldn't judge anyone for wearing something warm over a halter dress for the entire event either... but maybe I am slightly less judgemental and understand the value in being prepared...

With that said, YES! You can totally style a shawl, jacket, blazer, or cardigan over a halter dress to be used when you get cold.
