DS outgrown all available school trousers- where next?

MrsS0werberry · 26/02/2023 20:42

Sorry, not really style or beauty but clothing related anyway.

DS is v tall and skinny and still has a year and a bit left in school uniform. I've just let down the hems of his M&S school trousers which has given us an extra 1.5 cm approx, but they're not going to last long as he keeps growing, the bugger. I've just realised they are the biggest size M&S do (Next too). Ironically he still has the elasticated waists pulled right in - a proper beanpole. I was like that once <sobs>

Any ideas where I can find some cheap but not too nasty men's black trousers suitable for school uniform?

My 12 year old son is really tall and skinny and now wears Next men’s 26 inch waist skinny leg trousers. He also wears a belt with them.
They fit much better than the kids ones with the adjustable waist and he said they’re more comfortable.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 26/02/2023 20:49

Black workwear trousers, like waiters wear. It is easy to get a 28" waist and they often have long or unfinished hems . example

MrsS0werberry · 26/02/2023 20:52

Thanks! The workwear ones look great - I'd never have thought of that. Reassuring comment in the reviews "trousers are longer than stated." 😂

My beanpole wore ADSA - they have adjustable waists, so try the size 15-16 and pull them right in.

Otherwise try Trutex

MrsS0werberry · 26/02/2023 20:54

Thanks Ethelswith - he's got 15-16 now but that seems to be the biggest available size in the main HS shops.

M&S do a longer fit, they have a 34" inseam from age 14/15

Getting longer than a 34 leg is hard work, hence I discovered unfinished work wear for my leggy brat

QuillBill · 26/02/2023 20:56

My ridiculously skinny nephew gets his all,his jeans and trousers from ASOS.

Hellocatshome · 26/02/2023 20:56

Next do extra long and extra extra long waist trousers, look in the mens section but be prepared to buy a belt.

Hellocatshome · 26/02/2023 20:57

Leg not waist!

Dibblydoodahdah · 26/02/2023 20:58

My DS has the super skinny leg slim
waist school trousers from M & S. The go up to age 17-18.

Btjdkfnn · 26/02/2023 20:59

2tall
www.2tall.com/2t-skinny-fit-tall-trousers-black.html
you can get the length up to 40 inches
and the waist down to 28 inches
my ds wears these

handmademitlove · 26/02/2023 21:02

What length leg do you need?

Ripleysgameface · 26/02/2023 21:04

I had to stop buying supermarket/high street trousers and men's were too wide legged.

At just 16 he's 6ft 3 and slim

The school shop was the only place that did 38 inside leg

AdventFridgeOfShame · 26/02/2023 21:05

@Btjdkfnn I needed you 15 years ago Smile

@MrsS0werberry do you know his waist and inside leg?
Realistically, you will probably have to get trousers on-line.

Just realised I was looking at their normal trousers, not their uniform range! That's why i thought 15-16 was their biggest size. What an idiot I am! Thanks- this is what I needed. I've ordered some 16-17 and after that we still have 17-18 as an option.

Thanks everyone for your tips - I knew MN would know ;)

I used to buy DS1's school trousers from ASOS tall. They weren't cheap (about £20 each) but they washed and lasted well. They came in a range of shapes - he liked the slim fit ones

rhiannon1967 · 27/02/2023 08:37

The M&S age 16-17 and 17-18 trousers are the same length as the 15-16! I think the waists just get bigger.

However they do 'long length' and 'extra long length' school trousers.

I actually phoned up M&S to get the measurements. I dont know why they can't just put this info on the website.

From memory I think the 15-16, 16-17 and 17-18 standard trousers are all 29 inches inside leg. The long are 31 inside leg and the extra long are 33 inside leg. I may have this bit wrong but you get the idea. So you can go for long or extra long but stick with 15-16 if you still need the skinnier waist.

DisforDarkChocolate · 27/02/2023 08:40

Definitely worth looking at M&S for their extra long length trousers.

handmademitlove · 27/02/2023 16:05

The lengths are in the size guide on M&S website - extra long from 14-15yr are 34"

I'd second workwear supply stores. We found them excellent for skinny young ladies too.

Whaaaaat?!? I just ordered some of the 16-17s. I'll have to compare them to the 15-16s that we have. Will be annoyed if this is the case!

There's a niche market here (actually I suspect it's a pretty big market) for trousers for long thin boys. I've been having this problem since he was at nursery!

I found John Lewis long length were almost 2" longer than M&S, despite being sold as exactly the same.

Noticed tonight that DS's trousers are looking a bit short, but with less than two months to go until study leave they will have to do. I'll let them down 😆

Did you solve this problem and find something for him? My tall skinny ds needs new trousers and the 16-17 is too short now. Until now Asda were the best fit, at £16 for 2 pairs I'm not going to get that anymore!

We've tried:
Next extra long - far too big at the waist. They do slim waist but not in the longer length.
M&S extra long - all have a crease down the front which is an absolute no-go apparently, and they were very baggy on the bum with the waist pulled in.

He's 13, 6ft 1" but very lean. In men's sizing he would need 24 or possibly 26 Long skinny fit which I'm struggling to find anything suitable.

rhiannon1967 · 08/06/2024 23:43

M&S do the long and the extra long lengths in slim leg, skinny leg and super-skinny. @Invisimamma did you definitely try the skinny or superskinny leg and not the regular leg?

Also can you not just try to iron the front crease out if you are going to struggle to get any better ones?

CristabelSeagrave · 08/06/2024 23:49

Mine is wearing Tesco mens black trousers 33in leg just moved up from 31in leg. I'm hoping they see him through his last year next year! He's not fitted into 'school' trousers for a good while now.
