How can I avoid dated looking make up?

Oblongbluebell · 13/02/2023 21:24

I’ve recently got back into wearing make up. I feel like I do a semi-reasonable job of applying it, but I can’t help wondering if it looks a bit 90s/early 2000s. What should I do/use so that my make up looks current? What shouldn’t I do/use to avoid looking like I’m in a time warp?

Any advice/suggestions welcome. Thank you.

Any tips on eyebrows? Think mine are looking worse each week (90s/00s sperm brow trend) would love to know what products are worth trying!

Benefit microfilling brow pen is the best thing I've ever used on mine. It fills them out nicely but looks really natural.

RhadamanthNemes · 15/02/2023 07:06

Ok OP

Here's my 50 year old face. It doesn't look as though I'm wearing much make up, but I am!

So, you need to have a good base, look after your skin.

Then a primer, an illuminator.

Quality base. Then I love a cream eyeshadow, just rub it on, then eyeliner in the corners. Buy an eyelash curler and a decent mascara.

A cream blusher on the top of your cheek.

Eyebrows, don't fuck about with them, natural is best. Just comb up.

I’d go and get a Bobbi brown counter makeover

I read somewhere that the in thing with eye liner was to put it on the top lid very close/under the lashes? I've not tried it, it sounds painful! But it was called something and I can't remember what.

I'm 40 and Im just going with finding a very good matching shade of foundation, a good brow colour to hide the grey (!) And some mascara. Nothing too heavy. I just want to look less like I've been up all night with my sleep stealing DC

Tight lining! You apply black eyeliner under the lashes tight along the lash line. It makes the base of the lashes darker so has an eyeliner effect without being as obvious as eyeliner on the eyelid. It's actually not that hard to do. I use a waterproof liquid liner for staying power.

RhadamanthNemes · 15/02/2023 07:33

@littleburn I do tight-lining!

Brown not black though

Littlemiss74 · 15/02/2023 08:02

@RhadamanthNemes &. @littleburn which product do you use for tightlining? I love the look it gives but my eyes are sensitive and everything I’ve tried makes them into a watery mess

RhadamanthNemes · 15/02/2023 08:31

@Littlemiss74 I use Chantecaille it's very gentle. I just scribble it all round.

LostidentityM · 15/02/2023 08:47

Following! I do the black liner look but also think I look dated! What's the alternative? Dark brown?

RhadamanthNemes · 15/02/2023 08:55

What's your colouring @LostidentityM?

BoxOfCats · 15/02/2023 09:13

This is a great video on modern makeup:

RhadamanthNemes · 15/02/2023 09:40

That is not a good video.

It's great if you like shit-loads of lip-liner and contouring.

It's certainly a 'modern make-up look' if your look is 'I've drawn my face on'.

My 14 year old daughter does that, I let her get on with it.

I love make-up, but I'm not a fan of the overdone.

I'm not sure OP is after that.

@RhadamanthNemes dark skinned

Dreamstate · 15/02/2023 10:13

I've pared back my makeup since covid and its make me get used to my natural look. I just do eyeliner on top lid and then mascara and fill in my brows and quick sweep of blusher. I still love a good red lipstick so will use for nights out. Coral/ Peach wouldn't not suit my skin colour

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 15/02/2023 10:16

Applying less, a lot of us apply more with age but your skins lost that youthful glow and it now looks harsh.

It makes people look older.

I use Il Makiage waterproof liquid liner in black card. My eyes aren't particularly sensitive but I wear contacts. Never had any problem with it running or causing irritation.

My 16 year old dd and all her friends have eyeliner on the waterline. None underneath.

Yes mine too!

theatrical · 15/02/2023 11:06

Agree about the natural look, for younger and old. I use eyeliner on the upper waterline, the younger people are using it on the lower, but that never did suit me and o think that depends on eye shape as it can make eyes look smaller.

Mascara I never did like on the lower lashes, and some are dispensing with it altogether! Natural, non laminated (and all of that) brows.

theatrical · 15/02/2023 11:07

And dewy, glowing skin. Pinky or peachy blush

Ive just bought the Clinique black honey . I thought it would be too dark but it's a sheer looking colour and just what I'm looking for. So thanks to those who recommended it. Flowers

Shopper727 · 15/02/2023 11:21

i would say good skin care and cream products are the best way to look current and not over the top, I obs wear a bit more on a night out but during the day it’s very natural and soft. No black eyeliner, I use a chocolate brown and a brown tubing mascara from Clinique as my eyes are prone to watering so find it stays put.

I watch Bryony Blake, freyja, and a few others on instagram for tips and ideas or products I just need to lose weight as I don’t recognise my big moon face anymore but that’s me 😏

To avoid looking dated with your makeup, you can follow some tips:
Keep up with current makeup trends: Follow beauty bloggers and influencers on social media to stay up-to-date on current makeup trends. This can help you incorporate new styles and techniques into your makeup routine.
Choose timeless makeup looks: While it's important to stay up-to-date with current makeup trends, it's also a good idea to incorporate timeless makeup looks into your routine. Classic looks like a neutral smokey eye or a bold red lip never go out of style.
Use quality makeup products: Investing in high-quality makeup products can help you achieve a more modern look. High-quality products tend to have better color payoff and more advanced formulas.
Pay attention to your skin type: Make sure to choose makeup products that are suited for your skin type. For example, if you have oily skin, you may want to choose a mattifying foundation to avoid a dated-looking shiny face.
Keep your makeup minimal: A more natural and minimal makeup look tends to look more modern and fresh. Try to focus on enhancing your natural features with a few well-placed products, rather than piling on too much makeup.
Experiment with different colors: Trying out different colors and textures can help keep your makeup look fresh and modern. Don't be afraid to try a bold lip or colorful eyeshadow, as long as it suits your skin tone and complements your overall look.
Remember, the key to avoiding dated makeup is to be open to new ideas and techniques, while also embracing classic looks that never go out of style.

TulipVictory · 15/02/2023 12:09

@RhadamanthNemes your skin looks great for 50, what's your secret? 🤔

Silvergone · 15/02/2023 13:16

Well, if you want to look current like teen girls, grow your eyebrow into a massive slug, mascara it upright so it looks ridiculous, then inject poison into your lips so they look like they’ve been stung like a bee (aka will appeal to users of inflatable sex dolls).

Oh and stick on two pairs of false eyelashes.

Or you could just stick with a classic style. Modern make up trends are not a good look.
