What to wear to ds communion?

Rololol · 12/02/2023 09:02

Ds had his communion in May.
I don't wear dresses, usually jeans. I'm 5'2, size 14 and 40 if that makes a difference!
Any ideas?
Was thinking these black cords but are they not dressy enough and not sure what to wear with them.

Hmm no to cords. Didn't even look. If you don't like dresses what's your go to shape to go out in? Can you pick up a nice spring like outfit shopping wherever budget allows. I'm a big fan of m&s lately as it does good smart separates at a good price.

Maybe some trousers and a nice blouse/top?

For work I wear cropped stretched waist black trousers with a loose animal print shirt tucked in and a camel coloured jacket (from next) that does double duty for smarter casual occasions.

Rololol · 12/02/2023 09:18

I just wear jeans and a top!
So maybe black trousers and a blazer would be better?

I have no idea either but following this thread as I also have a DS with a communion coming up!

I think I will wear a dress.

Coffeesnob11 · 12/02/2023 09:22

How about a jumpsuit?

Rololol · 12/02/2023 09:23

@Coffeesnob11 I tried a jumpsuit but I'm quite short and chunky legs...not a great look for me!

What about a trouser suit in pink or another bright colour?

PAFMO · 12/02/2023 09:28

I wore black trousers and a longline linen wool top for dd's.

RampantIvy · 12/02/2023 09:29

I agree that as it is an "occasion" that jeans won't cut it. You don't need to go OTT, it isn't a wedding. And don't buy a dress if you won't ever wear it again.

I would dress as if going for an interview - smart trousers a shirt/blouse and a jacket.

Do you wear jeans all the time, even in very hot weather?

Rololol · 12/02/2023 09:36

Are wide leg trousers more flattering with short legs?

Black is very sombre for a first communion, and it's likely to be quite warm in May.

I'm not a big lover of dress or formal wear, but I'd make an effort for something like this. First communions are not as formal as weddings. Sticking with FF,

This whole outfit - although I can't find the blouse on the FF website.
Or this top and chinos, and a cardigan.

Oblomov23 · 12/02/2023 09:53

Whatever you decide it must be smart, and you must feel comfortable in it. A pair of smart trousers and a top will be fine.

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 12/02/2023 09:57

Navy 3/4 length pants with a blue blouse with a nice neckline and some embellishment, or tan pants and navy top, paired with tan high heels.?

RampantIvy · 12/02/2023 10:02

Why tan? It doesn't suit everyone?
(Biased because I am a jewel winter)

LadyEloise1 · 12/02/2023 10:03

Communions in Ireland can be very dressy.
Not quite as dressy as weddings but....
What would you wear to a wedding @Rololol and then tone it down a fair bit.
However if it's in the UK I don't know what Mums wear to Communions.

redspottedmug · 12/02/2023 10:04

It's up to you how smart you go.

Some families make a big occasion of it, big do afterwards etc. Others keep it low key. So feel free to dress to suit your family celebration.

How about swapping out the jeans for smarter trousers and a favourite top, maybe a blazer to pull it together.

Rololol · 12/02/2023 10:13

@LadyEloise1 yes I'm in Ireland, communions are a big deal so I dread to think how dressy the mums will be!
Maybe I'm over thinking it, Black trousers, dressy blouse new shoes.

In my experience dressing for a communion can be as dressy as a wedding for a small amount and a notch down for most. Tends to be more spring/summer lights/bright colours.
I wore a long silk maxi dress with cropped jacket for my daughters and a cream trouser suit with a silk top for my sons. Half the mums of communicants were similarly dressy.
I wouldn’t recommend business dress, would look very sombre and reminiscent of funeral attire.
If you’re not sure on a dress or jumpsuit, try some separates to suit. If trying wide leg trousers, just make sure you balance it out with a fitted top.
Most of all, enjoy the special day.

OnaBegonia · 12/02/2023 10:19

Tapered leg trouser, bright blazer, heels.
Tan? 3/4 length? she's 40 not an 80 yr old lost in Seasalt fgs

LadyEloise1 · 12/02/2023 10:27

Black trousers, dressy blouse and nice shoes would be lovely and as @redspottedmug says a blazer.
I wouldn't go for wide trousers if you are short or short and dumpy like me.

Do you watch The Style Counsellors on RTE ?
You might see something on that.
Though sometimes, though rare, the outfits aren't great for the person intended.
I'm thinking ankle straps on thicker ankles. Just No !
Or too short skirts on those with chunkier legs.
But it is great to see what's available in Ireland for the Irish consumer.
Suzanne J is soo stylish.

Rololol · 12/02/2023 10:30

Yes I think a bright blazer will dress it up a bit. I'm a bit clueless with tapered leg, wide leg. Maybe I'll stay away from the wide leg and seasalt🤣

I’ve been to a few and women tend to wear nice dresses with a print. You could probably get something off eBay and then hand it off to charity.

DoorstoManual · 12/02/2023 10:36

Good quality black jeans, bright top, but if like me you can’t carry patterns or bright colours then something plain and statement jewellery.

Oh and make sure you have comfortable shoes.

Keep an eye on Boden, they sometimes have a nice summer dress for occasions. The main reason I say them is that I'm a similar age and size profile to you and I've had a few good buys over the years for this kind of thing.
