What to wear to ds communion?

Rololol · 12/02/2023 09:02

Ds had his communion in May.
I don't wear dresses, usually jeans. I'm 5'2, size 14 and 40 if that makes a difference!
Any ideas?
Was thinking these black cords but are they not dressy enough and not sure what to wear with them.

If you are in Ireland you need to dress up.

If you are on a budget then Dunnes do really nice tapered trousers for about €20, in both black and navy and maybe other colours, they look quite nice with high heels, and you just need some dressy top/blouse. You ll wear them again and again.

Irish communions are very dressy, for most people but not everyone, some people rock up in any old sundress they have for holidays, so anything goes really.

Sounds like communions vary a lot depending on where you live. DS had his first holy communion on Christmas Eve. I just wore a pair of smart ish jeans, jumper and had a huge coat over the top that never got unbuttoned as it was cold in church. You are also just sat watching, not " up front or anything ", I would not of felt a need for a special outfit. DS literally just got up and had communion as part of the mass.

I'm wearing an oversized 'mensy' Topshop blazer and trousers (suit). Not chosen a top for underneath but probably a strappy bodysuit.
I'll wear them again as separates too. I already have the trousers in a different colour and love them. I've got the suit in a cornflower blue colour

I've also got a baptism coming up and want to wear a dress, any suggestions?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/02/2023 11:09

@Rololol - ignore my casual-ish suggestions, I'm English (RC family, but English). Take guidance from the Irish Mammies! Probably step away from Seasalt and Fatface.

(I know you said you'd don't wear dresses, but a dress and blazer could be a quick win).

pornyshroudofturin · 12/02/2023 11:15

I'd go navy trousers rather than black. Black can look a bit "work uniform"

Rololol · 12/02/2023 11:20

@pornyshroudofturin I was just thinking navy looks less work wear.
What colour top or blazer would work well with navy?

Think what you would wear to a wedding or Christening and wear that. I wore a midi dress to my dad's, I have my Dad's coming up this summer and will probably opt for a lined dress or smart trousers blouse and cheerful jacket.

I’m an Irish mammy!! OP I would wear white trousers - straight or tapered or wide - ankle length- and a very dressy tunic top - choose your favourite color, blues; tan; coral; - silky and patterned work well. You can usually buy these in Zara. Then ‘dainty’ shoes but you can wear heels or flats - whichever you prefer. And a small bag.

I have had 3 Communions - last was 2 years ago!! This was the outfit people wore if they did not want to wear a dress.

good luck.

OnaBegonia · 12/02/2023 16:42

Maybe this kind of thing with tapered trousers and heels.

As so many of the school mums were making a gigantic fuss over their outfits, I went the other way and wore white jeans and a nice top. But I’m allergic to looking dressed up.

Rololol · 12/02/2023 19:34

@OnaBegonia yes that blazer really dresses it up, I'll definitely go for something like that.
@DillDanding I'm definitely not wearing a dress just because the rest of them are,!

Black is very sombre for a first communion, and it's likely to be quite warm in May.

I'm not a big lover of dress or formal wear, but I'd make an effort for something like this. First communions are not as formal as weddings. Sticking with FF,

This whole outfit - although I can't find the blouse on the FF website.
Or this top and chinos, and a cardigan.

That's really casual -it's more hanging out in the garden at week ends than a formal occasion in church.

Cuppasoupmonster · 12/02/2023 20:43

No. Communion dress is basically wedding guest attire just without the hat.

Findyourneutralspace · 12/02/2023 22:29

White trousers would look fab with the pink blazer posted up thread. You could wear a navy top under it, or a paler pink. That would be perfectly appropriate and nice.
