Extra long women’s trousers

DD (13) is 5’8” but has ridiculously long legs, like her dad. School trousers are becoming an issue, the extra length ones from m&s are too short even with the additional hem down. I’ve just bought some Sainsbury’s women’s “long” black trousers which are about 1cm longer than the m&s ones, and still not really long enough.

I don’t want to have to go Long Tall Sally prices for school trousers, but are there any extra-long legged budget brands out there?

Would men’s trousers work, or be too obvious? I don’t think DD would care (few girls wear the school trousers) but don’t want her to get comments.

This isn’t a problem I have ever had as although I’m 5’6” I need petite trousers due to my teeny legs!

Have a look at Next they do an extra long leg which should be long enough.

Singleandproud · 27/01/2023 19:08

DD is 5ft 8 I buy her school trousers from Next, I get her the extra long womens boot cut ones in grey.

Decorhate · 27/01/2023 19:09

Have you tried the M&S women’s section? It’s the only place I can buy trousers that are long enough.

SlipperyLizard · 27/01/2023 19:21

Oh Next is a good idea, they used to be the only place DH could get trousers long enough (36 inch inside leg!).

I was trying to avoid m&s adult prices for school wear but I am getting desperate!

Yes try NEXT. I'm 5ft 9 with disproportionately long legs and their 35" are more than long enough. Never have them in store though.

Singleandproud · 27/01/2023 19:25

Have a look in the Next clearance section of the website. They had extra long tailored trousers in it last week they might have some in the size / colour you need.

princesssugarless · 27/01/2023 19:32

M and a woman's - they have some lovely comfy jersey ones which are ridiculously long. I'm 5"9 and have has to turn the long ones up! Even with shoes they were far too long. I think they were £16.

My daughter has m and a women's trousers for school. £22.50 a pair so not extortionate. She's 5ft 6 and the regular length is a very decent length on her so hopefully long would work for your daughter.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/01/2023 19:46

Next Tall range is v long. My DD is 5"10 and all legs and I find the M&S ones fit her. Do you have the extra long? They do longer length and extra long. I get her the extra long in the size up and then just adjust the waist with the elastic/buttons.
For PE I got her some tall range black joggers from Asos which are 36".

WhereAreWeNow · 27/01/2023 19:48

Ps. M&S have changed their women's sizing so the extra long trousers are incredibly long. You might find something suitable in the women's trousers section.
Also, are skirts an option? Might be easier than finding long trousers.
I feel your pain OP.

JanuaryBlues2023 · 27/01/2023 19:57

I’d go ASOS Tall range - for tall cheap and cheerful lots of choice and pay for years delivery. That way she can 6 or 8 pairs to try.

As this will also do for jeans and out of school wear.

PAFMO · 27/01/2023 20:20

Definitely Next.
I'm 5ft 10 and wear their Long or Xtra Long. I made the mistake of thinking I was special and ordered XXlong a few years ago and could have fitted 3 of me in them.
Remember too Next are big (no pun intended) on vanity sizing. I'm a 12 everywhere in a trouser except Next where I'm an 8.

JanuaryBlues2023 · 27/01/2023 20:22

For a 13 year old I think ASOS would be better.

SlipperyLizard · 27/01/2023 21:00

Thanks all - I’ve ordered some Next trousers in the XL tall, I think they’ll be ok (33 inch inside leg). More than I wanted to spend but needs must.

Skirts are an option but DD has never liked/worn them, plus tights are compulsory and I can only imagine buying tights for such long legs would be another nightmare!

I got her M&S age 15-16 with extra length, took the extra length down but now she’s grown again! There’s a good few cm between the hem of the trouser & her shoes!

Don’t get me started on PE kit, it can only be bought from one supplier who do not cater for long legged girls!

I had same problem with PE kit @SlipperyLizard but I complained about it and they let me buy a sew on school logo and stitch that on to the plain black joggers from Asos. I would write to head raising concerns about the uniform policy and explain the problems it's causing you and your DD. I think there was actually a change in law last year about reasonable uniform policies. Basically schools should limit the number of items that have to be specially bought to things like blazers. PE bottoms is a good example of where it makes sense to just say plain black/navy joggers/shorts.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/01/2023 08:33

Marks has just had a change in lengths and usually ex long is just about long enough on a good day and depending on style but now regular length is ok for me and I'm nearly 5,11.

legalseagull · 28/01/2023 08:43

Long Tall Sally

I came on to say M&S!

M&S have changed their sizing and their trousers are now incredibly long, so maybe they’ll work for your daughter.

I went there yesterday for the first time in ages to try some trousers on. I’m 5’6 and their regular trousers totally swamped me….the only size that fitted were the short ones. I’ve never worn ‘short’ length and am fairly average (if not taller) compared to most of my female friends/colleagues.

The changing room assistant said they’d had a lot of comments about how long their trousers are now since they recently changed manufacturer.

Cyclingmummy1 · 28/01/2023 09:50

It might not be the same for girls, but I found John Lewis long length boys school trousers were a good 3cm longer than M&S. Hopefully they'll see a tall skinny year 11 through to the end of the year. Suits next year which, having recently bought one for a wedding, will be its own headache. Sports trousers are so long that the small senior I bought in year 8 still just about fit 😆

hotshot55 · 28/01/2023 09:55

I'm 6ft1 and refuse to buy from LTS as it's so expensive. The following all have tall/longer lengths online.

ASOS (my go to)

Please don't buy her men's trousers.I had this and felt awful!

InconvenientPeg · 28/01/2023 10:00

Lts is part of Very now and is cheaper, though the quality is awful but prob ok for school trousers.

ASOS is good, you just have to keep an eye, as their stock changes quite frequently..

If you do need tights, snag are all I bother with now, but I'd stick to trousers because skirts are a whole other world of pain!

I’d only consider men’s if I couldn’t find any women’s (I was deeply conscious, as all teens are, of not wanting to have the “wrong” thing and wouldn’t want my DD to feel uncomfortable). But the great suggestions on here mean that’s not going to happen!

My Next order comes today but I’m worried they’ll be too big as I ordered a 10 which normally fits her in other shops!
