So I have a day in London next week, flying in, walking round city and nice lunch and dinner. What can I wear that will be comfy and stylish?

Which day? The weather looks slightly different each day!

I'd probably go for a pair of flat leather boots (waterproof if it rains), leggings and a cute oversized jumper, long tan coat and bag that can hold a mini umbrella in. Or white trainers if you've got a nice pair? But I'm a bit of a basic bitch when it comes to outfits!

What have you got? What is in your wardrobe that you're thinking of wearing?

BigotSpigot · 14/01/2023 20:52

Decide the day before when you know what the weather will be. Definitely very comfortable shoes, otherwise absolutely whatever you like. No need to dress up for almost anywhere, unless you want to of course. If anything Londoner's dress down....

33goingon64 · 14/01/2023 21:03

Layers and flat comfy shoes.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 14/01/2023 21:17

Monday to Thursday's forecast is really quite cold. It does depend how much walking you'll do - if it's just between A&B and you'll spend the rest of the time indoors then just a big coat will do but if you're going to be properly yomping along for hours outside you might want a couple of thin layers that can come off later.

It's be a lot colder if you're exposed by the Thames rather than in built up areas.

Flat shoes, Londoners do dress down so trendy/ quirky - or just posh smart like the pics a PP posted - can't go wrong.

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/01/2023 22:03

You can wear whatever you like here. If you don’t want to stand out, don’t dress up

Rina66 · 14/01/2023 22:18

I'd wear a one colour base with a comfy not too heavy coat over the top, flat boots, big scarf and wrist warmers. Cross body bag, possibly a hat if it's really cold!

Jeans boots. Blouse underneath and a jumper. Can go night to day easily

AbsoluteYawns · 14/01/2023 22:48

Anything you like. No one cares in London!
Obviously wear comfy shoes.

HGC2 · 15/01/2023 08:07

Thanks all, I was thinking along those lines but need to find some comfy boots as mine are fine in, anyone recommend comfy but stylish boots as we will be walking miles!

No one dresses up anymore unless it’s literally a really special event. If you’re just doing touristy stuff you want a few different layers incase it rains or suddenly gets warmer, really comfy shoes (probably trainers!) and a bag that has a secure zipped compartment to put your stuff in that doesn’t hang on your back - so people can’t pick pocket from behind in very crowded places. (Born and raised in London)!

I wouldn’t wear new boots. Your feet will die.

DarlingCoffee · 15/01/2023 08:18

warm coat, and definitely comfortable walking shoes. It’s meant to be cold next week so I would wear smart trousers and a good jumper. Have fun!

AuntieMarys · 15/01/2023 08:19

Wear boots you already have which are comfy!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/01/2023 08:21

I had a day in London recently and wore skinny jeans and trainers, fingerless gloves and a crossbody bag. I’m in my 50’s. Was not out of place at all. Took great note of what everyone else was wearing as MN tells me skinny jeans are definitely out. No they aren’t. Every age group was wearing skinny jeans or leggings. Obviously other styles of jeans too, and a few skirts.

Wear whatever you like. Smart or casual. Anything goes.

Workawayxx · 15/01/2023 08:34

I’d work out footwear first based on some you have that are comfy then go from there. If you want to get new boots I’d go m&s or Clarks as they have always been comfy from the start for me. But try on in store. Maybe sone Chelsea boots or lace up like these?

Oh dress up op. Life is short, we've all had a shit few years and you're having a day out.
Comfortable shoes.
Warm, weatherproof coat.
And then underneath it, dress the hell up, any way you like.

Dress up, dress up, dress up

AnnaMagnani · 15/01/2023 08:45

London is a very dressed down place. Plus you walk a lot so no-one is giving up their trainers soon. And there is a massive cost of living crisis so a lot of people are not going to be buying this year's jeans or whatever.

I had a massive shock when I went to Liverpool, went to a nice restaurant and realised I should have spent this afternoon doing my hair and makeup.

In London you can totally dress up if you want to, but don't be disappointed if the people on the next table to you at the posh restaurant are wearing jeans and a hoodie.

Best boots , I’m on my third pair as we speak

Reugny · 15/01/2023 08:52

Make sure you bring a pair of gloves and a scarf if you are coming this week. It is going to be cold.

spartanrunnergirl · 15/01/2023 08:52

I'd wear trainers tbh. The soles will be much kinder to your feet as give padding. Wear thick socks in your boots if you are walking all day.

I went London on a similar itinerary and wore-

Of white white flared wide leg trousers
white air max Nikes

t shirt
oatmeal roll neck sweater
camel coat
black leather/canvas rucksack

for dinner I rolled up blouse and took some hoop earrings. Changed in the loo.

Dress for comfort, especially shoes. Most people in London these days where flats, even trainers.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2023 09:00

Contrary to most people on here, I’d say don’t wear too many layers. The tube, galleries and shops are always really warm. My outfit would also depend on if it is going to rain.

Absolutely no to new boots. You need to be able to guarantee your feet are comfortable!

If raining, I’d go skirt, tights, lightweight merino jumper, raincoat and hat. Skirts and tights dry out faster than jeans. Boots. I’d avoid trainers if raining because of slipping.

If not raining, I’d do dark slim flare jeans, trainers, lightweight merino knit or a blouse layered over a T-shirt. Wool coat.

Workawayxx · 15/01/2023 09:08

@pompei8309 ah, I really want the lace up burgundy ones now 😍!
