Winter coat with good range of interval/external pockets?

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 13/01/2023 12:01

My much loved North Face Brooklyn jacket is reaching the end of its life, after a mere decade of daily wear for four months a year Sad (see attached photo from John Lewis archives of what it used to look like, sniff).

One of the many things I've loved about it is that it has lots of zipped pockets inside and out for phone, Oyster, keys and credit cards, essential if you travel by tube as much as I do.

So has anyone please seen anything good in the sales which:
Is warm
Covers the bum
Is more or less waterproof
Has a hood
Doesn't have overt branding like the new North Face Brooklyn Parka
Has secure, ideally internal pockets for phone/cards etc.

Online searches are good for most things but answering the pocket question requires digging into the description for every single item which is why I'm in search of the wisdom of the S&B crowd.

In terms of shape, I'm a short pear shaped size 12.

Well without wishing to sound obvious have you looked at North Face again? The Belleview is good. I like the Sierra but it might be too long if you want a jacket length. Belleview probably better for pockets.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/01/2023 12:23

Look at Didriksons, a variety of styles and lengths, very waterproof can get padded or unpadded (I'm surprised you'd want a padded warm one living in London and travelling on the tube, but that's up to you, mine is unpadded and I just wear a jumper or down jacket under it when it's very cold).

Might get one in the sales now, mine is mid thigh length rather than what you've pictured, but it's got two chest pockets, two hip pockets and another small pocket next to the zip, all zipped (this is where I keep my payment card when anywhere that needs tapping in and out. There's also a deep pocket inside that takes an OS map. Details about pockets was something that was really lacking when I was looking for mine, so I went to some actual shops to see for myself and try on, and ended up getting one in the sale from Cotswold.

Thanks Barbara, I'll seek out some Didriksons to try on. I run very cold so wear a thick padded jacket for almost half the year, October to March, even on the Tube.

Thanks for the suggestion Mandy, but I can't see any secure pockets on the Belleview and I hate the new in-your-face North Face branding: it obviously works with a younger target market but it's not for me. Sierra looks like it would drown me.

Barbour is great for this, I have the Belgrave and it's brilliant. Lightweight but super warm, completely waterproof, loads of pockets including secure internal ones.

I've got one from Lands End which would fit your requirements. Long, waterproof, lots of pockets, warm, hooded.

TheMagicDeckchair · 14/01/2023 18:34

It’s a cheaper price point but I bought a Peter Storm Paloma parka for the school run. So far it’s fully waterproof, warm but not too bulky and has two enormous external pockets, plus two smaller zipped chest pockets and one internal zipper chest pocket.
My only complaint is that the hood is on the large side and obscures my vision a little but otherwise it’s a really practical coat.

FunnyCradock · 14/01/2023 22:30

I just bought a Fjallraven Nuuk parka.
Ticks all your requirements. It’s windproof & waterproof with loads of pockets.

Didriksons are great for keeping you warm, dry and lots of pockets! Some nice items in the sale here www.nordicoutdoor.co.uk/clearance/womens-sale/ and worth looking at country type shops for sales for good warm, waterproof coats at this time as lots have extra % off offers eg CHO, Country Attire etc.

Love the Nuuk but couldn't justify it as I've already got a similar Didriksons - also been eyeing up the eye watering 66° North range....

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 15/01/2023 00:59

Thanks all. The Nuuk looks perfect, albeit at a cost...., I've got a lightweight summer Barbour with brilliant pockets. I thought none of their heavier coats are my style, but hadn't seen the Belgrave - I love the green but it doesn't seem very waterproof.

I need to get to the cluster of outdoor shops near Covent Garden and try stuff on asap.

If you're still looking OP, I bought this last year and one of the reasons is the pockets! 6 outside and one inside.

BornAgainCountryBumpkin1 · 26/01/2023 20:30

Didriksons definitely. About the same price point. Like a Swiss army coat. But from Sweden. I think.

MissRainbowBrite · 26/01/2023 20:40

I have the Nuuk and it would fit your bill for having many pockets but it's extremely warm. I only wear mine when it's below about 3 degrees. If you like being toasty it's well worth it though as it fits all your requirements. Also, it's quite heavy.

stickystick · 26/01/2023 20:54

I bought a navy Barbour Mull in the John Lewis sale. It covers my rear and all other key areas, has a hood, and is just as warm as my old padded jacket but without being as bulky. No evident branding!

Bimblesalong · 26/01/2023 20:57

I have one from Rohan (Alberta) and have just had a few days in Iceland feeling toasty warm in -18°. It has many pockets!

MargaritaRita · 26/01/2023 20:59

The Men's Department. Not kidding. It's where I buy all my winter casual stuff. Great length, many (deep) pockets, inside pockets, outside zipped pockets at chest level, hoods, you name it, they've got it!

I tend not to buy expensive as these jackets get hacked around like hell, so the men's department of any big store will help.

Of course if you are into labels, sorry I can't help you there!
