Lipstick if I rarely wear makeup?

YorkieTheRabbit · 08/10/2022 17:01

Can anyone recommend me a lipstick please? I don’t often wear makeup but I’d like try a new one. Something that’s fairly neutral, my lips but better if such a thing exists.
I have fair skin, blonde hair (coloured) and I’m 55.
Thanks 😊

This is my go to with a similar colouring to yourself.

It's absolutely my lips but better and nice and moisturising.

I also love this one https://www.amazon.com/Lipstick-Queen-Medieval-0-12-Women/dp/B07GSDDRVX?ref=asttstodp

Don't be scared of the colour. It's a really really sheer red and gives just a pop of colour and not "red" lips.

This one "frog Prince" is also great. The colour reacts with the ph of your lips so the final pink shade depends on you. Again its lovely and moisturisering.

Can you tell I'm a fan Smile. I think they are good because all they do is lip products so imho it's a good place to start.

Do you want Matt/sheet/gloss/moisturising etc.

Ps I linked to Amazon cos I'm lazy but you can find better pricing

BreadInCaptivity · 08/10/2022 17:40

Oh that's pretty and very similar to Jean Queen...

YorkieTheRabbit · 08/10/2022 17:46

@IggysPop Thanks, I’ll have a look

@BreadInCaptivity mmm, think you could possibly be a bit of a fan 😂
Red does scare me tbh, I got a Mac ruby woo in an advent calendar last year, took one look and put it in a drawer.
Texture wise, nothing particularly shiny, don’t need moisturising as I use a lip balm at night. Other than that, I’m clueless 🤷‍♀️

My DD had some Urban Decay lipsticks ( probably still has them ) the case snaps shut with a very satisfying 'click' and a nice metal gold/silver case .

I've got a 'TooFaced 'one after searching to replace my favourite BodyShop one (I think 06 Clover Pink) I bought new ones but never as good

Lip exfoliator and a lip liner make a huge difference .

MAC Velvet Teddy or Twig and CT Pillow Talk

MAC Velvet Teddy or Twig and CT Pillow Talk

I agree with velvet teddy or pillow talk. I personally find velvet teddy has more staying power

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/10/2022 18:31

Yes to Velvet Teddy - or one of the Benefit balms, which are just lovely to wear.

YorkieTheRabbit · 08/10/2022 18:33

@Cheesyfootballs01 Thanks
I was wondering about Mac velvet teddy, I’ve read it’s supposed to suit most people, not sure if that’s true though. I’ll look at the others you mentioned. I’m buying online so not that easy to check the colours. 😊

Just checked , my TooFaced one is PinkChocolate , slightly darker MMBB

I've had a quick look at PillowTalk bu its a bit beige for me .

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 08/10/2022 19:07

Try Rimmel Asia. I'm the same colouring as you and bought it as a budget emergency purchase when I forgot my make up bag on a work trip about 10 years ago. It's been my go-to 'everyday' lipstick every since, and the only one except Clinique's Black Honey that I've ever repurchased.

You can get MAC in a mini size which is about £14.

Ohyoudodoyou · 08/10/2022 19:40

I'm trying to replace all my lipsticks (Dior/Clinique) etc with cheaper and more importantly (to me) cruelty free.
I went to Boots today and a rare thing happened. The holy grail of make up - they had FULL quota of no 7 lipstick testers! I nearly wet myself with excitement.
I bought a red one for £10 - 'glam' - it's a nice jammy berry red. I'd suggest having a look at their range as lots of good neutral shades (and 3 for 2!)

I bought pillow talk and can say categorically that it doesn't suit everyone.

Same for MAC velvet teddy.

I look like death warmed up in both (DSD was the happy recipient of both and they look great on her).

I think the undertone is just to cool for me and I need something warmer.

Also my lips are naturally quite rosy so a lot of nude lipsticks are paler than my natural lip colour and just look really odd.

Of the CT lipsticks my favourite is probably Bond Girl. Then Walk of Shame.

oceanbleu · 08/10/2022 22:14

Try and get to a shop and see the shades in person I think. I've made many expensive mistakes ordering online and then it just didn't suit me! Totally depends on your colouring. I was all set to buy velvet teddy but then saw it at the mac counter and it was dreadful! Totally brown and made me look corpse like. However I really like pillow talk though. Also MAC mehr is a fave.

YorkieTheRabbit · 08/10/2022 22:36

Thanks everyone.
I’m having a look at all the suggestions, think I’ll end up ordering a couple of different ones.
My nearest town has a Boots but that doesn’t have much apart from No7, Benefit a Rimmel stand and the last time I went there was still an Estée Lauder counter.
To get more choice I’d end up having to trek to the closest city which I hate doing, a full day out to buy a lipstick 😱
I was also going to ask about a subtle blusher too 😂

YorkieTheRabbit · 08/10/2022 22:42

I’ve just checked my two rather old Mac lipsticks, one is Hug Me and the other Mocha. Both are a bit too brown and dark for me now.

I'd look for a cream blush. Easy to apply and regulate how much you want to apply.

Also imho better on more mature skin as they are more glowing/flattering.

I really like the Bobbi Brown ones and they last for ages.

Amortentia · 08/10/2022 23:47

If you’re really not used to lipstick I’d advise you to stay away from brands like MAC or Charlotte Tilbury and try the brands that make very light, lip balm like formulas like Dior, Chanel (flash & bloom) or Bobbi Brown. You can really feel MAC on the lips and there are very light Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks but I think Chanel does it much better.

AdelaideRo · 08/10/2022 23:55

If you want a good nude I'd suggest Chantecaille Lip Chic.
I have camellia which is a good pinkish neutral for someone with a pale Scottish complexion & pale hair.

However, I got Hourglass I am for my birthday and I love it!. It's a fab colour - bright pink and looks great on a range of skin tones (several friends also have it). Lovely texture and the packaging (I'm a sucker) is super cool.

MistyRock · 09/10/2022 09:02

Op, why don't you go to No7, get matched with their machine thingy as you can then find lipsticks to suit you as they have a lipstick matching service too.

YorkieTheRabbit · 09/10/2022 09:33

@Amortentia Thanks, that sounds like the type of product I’m after

@BreadInCaptivity I’ll have a look at cream blusher, that definitely sounds more the type of thing I want. I’ve got decent skin texture, just occasionally want a bit of glow

@MistyRock didn’t realise No7 did lip match. Years ago I had a foundation match, I came out as cool ivory. That colour was fine for me although I haven’t worn foundation for years. I do occasionally use No7 tinted moisturiser or bb cream, I’m not sure which it is without checking.

@AdelaideRo thanks Chantecaille isn’t a brand I know anything about but I’ll have a look.

I'm cool ivory too. I wear pinks, mauves, blue reds. Basically blue toned lipsticks and some corals. Here a (rubbish) link.

Rimmel Soft Hearted is nice too.
