Help handbag people: which Acne Musubi Mini colour?

totalnamechanger · 14/09/2022 09:57

Hello, I’ve just bought the above bag in brown ( dark beige to be precise) and picked it up from the store that I ordered it from. Although I really like the design, the type of brown is quite flat and I don’t think flatters my (pale, pink toned) skin.

Would it be a mistake to swap it for a black one? Is black too safe for the style? Or any other colours you’d recommend? www.acnestudios.com/uk/en/musubi-mini/A10093-AL4.html?categid=woman-bags

I can’t go for an orange as it doesn’t suit my colouring and some of the bright colours I’m not sure if I’d get enough wear from. White? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Or another minimal / European made/ easy wearing alternative bag? Any thoughts appreciated.

Disclaimer: No, I don’t have space in my garden for a bench. Yes I do want to spend £750+ on a bag. Yes I have had a shit time recently (haven’t we all) and would like something fun in my life. No I can’t use the money for a holiday as I can’t go on holiday for foreseeable future (see above point) and finally I don’t think it will solve all my problems 😉

I've often contemplated buying this one too but the colour options put me off. It loses a lot of its personality in black, especially when worn with other darker colours. The white ages terribly (the corners are especially susceptible to damage and is most noticeable on the white and I think the process of making it white also makes it more fragile), the brown is a cool brown that does feel flat somehow. I sweet they used to have a cognac colour that was good but I've not seen it sold for a long time. I would have suggested the burgundy version but it looks like they do that one either. I ended up buying a different and more expensive Acne bag 🤷

Off the top of my head, you could consider some of the South Korean brands like Danse Lente, Osoi, or Low Classic or some of the other Scandi designers like Yvonne Koné or Aesther Akme. Yuzefi or Boyy may have something too.

Also, either Arket or Cos (but think Arket) has a fairly close dupe to the musubi but even more limited colour choices.

Appleblum · 14/09/2022 10:13

The blue is nice.

totalnamechanger · 14/09/2022 10:14

Thanks so much Bo. Actually the Arket, opposite Liberty where I bought it, has a beautiful burgundy, which would be my preferred colour. However it’s not got all the detail understandably- and I’m not sure about the ethics?

I’ll look into the other options you gave. Appreciate your reply. I’m a fan of your work on this board 😁

Lovely blue

botemp · 14/09/2022 10:24

A fan eek 🙈

Yes, the Arket one is a lot more basic. I think Arket does do an attempt at being an ethical business. Not sure if Acne is all that ethical, made in Europe though so there's that at least.

Forgot to mention Frenzlauer which is an Italian brand.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 14/09/2022 10:28

I love the blue one! Agree that the brown is a bit flat. Blue or orange for me, although it does mean you might not be able to wear it on all occasions depending on the rest of your clothes.

LizziesTwin · 14/09/2022 10:32

I like the blue, it would look good against most winter coat colours. A bright coloured bag is such a mood lifter.

nzeire · 14/09/2022 10:43

The grey! It’s beautiful!
I have a couple of grey bags and they are so versatile!

totalnamechanger · 14/09/2022 10:52

Oh thanks everyone, just been underground. Yes I love a bit of Klein/ ultra blue and have a couple of pieces of clothing in it. I’ll have a think about whether it would be versatile enough with the rest of my wardrobe. The pink and orange are beautiful in the flesh (and made my brown look quite sad) but I think too restrictive. Older pictures of the bag did indeed seem to have a warmer/ richer brown 😕 I don’t wear much grey at the moment, but it is a lovely colour of grey.

Yes, complete fan, Bo! 😆

Oh fuck it. Nice bag. 🫣something else to covet

deedledeedledum · 14/09/2022 11:02

Danse Lente seems to have gone awol. One left on sale at liberty that is pretty great https://www.fenwick.co.uk/women/bags/shoulder-bags/lake-jumbo-shoulder-bag/Lake-Jumbo-Shoulder-Bag-F21-57-5415.html?dwvarLake-Jumbo-Shoulder-Bag-F21-57-54155_color=BLACK#sc=0&start=1

Thanks so much for these thoughts and suggestions so far. Final bump before I decide 😄

Blow the budget and get the Loewe Puzzle Halo

Have you tried the size up, the one that's not cross body by any chance, I've always liked that one too and that one doesn't lose its personality in black. It's kind of big though.

I do also like the electric blue and if my main winter coat was navy I'd definitely consider that one. Or potentially trawl the secondhand sites, the cognac colour was a really nice warm full colour and probably what you were hoping for with the brown.

totalnamechanger · 15/09/2022 23:21

Well, it’s only a few steps away at Liberty, so it did cross my mind fleetingly. But then there are so many colours, with the mixed ones too, I wouldn’t know where to start 😁. Not to mention the extra pennies…. 🤔

As I currently have the brown Musubi with label attached, it would be easy to pop in and swap, so I’ve been reassessing just how boring the black would be, and just how impractical the orange is. The black looks much shinier in the shop than the brown and the other colours also really stand out in comparison. Liberty just have four colours, but I’d go elsewhere for the perfect colour.

Actually the colour contrast with orange would work with some of my clothes - including a couple of electric blue items! But still possibly too seasonal in comparison to a broad neutral? I think the bigger size is too big for me for the shape. I’ve seen a v nice looking big burgundy at Arket, but bought a basket bag from Arket in the summer with a cracked leather trim, so a bit wary.

I have to say some of the Yuzefi shapes (you mentioned) are gorgeous and ones to remember, but I’m quite keen to make Musubi work, as a medium sized bag, if possible.

Thanks for your thoughts. I enjoy the Paris threads and your contribution. It’s interesting to hear from people who have a wider frame of reference than UK cities.

botemp · 16/09/2022 10:33

Is there not a standalone Acne shop in London? They usually have more stock and often special editions that may just take your fancy.

I don't know if Liberty's carry them but the Lemaire camera bag (not the mini, that one is a useless size) is also really nice. They do some great classic colours but it also looks amazing in colour. Not sure how much it is in GBP, it's around the same price in Euros as the Musubi mini but IME Lemaire is more expensive in GBP.

So long as it's not your one and only bag I do think a bright coloured bag is a great asset to have, it's very cheery and eye catching.

(And if you're going to snoop around at Loewe despite better financial judgement, the Loewe moulded bucket bag isn't far off in price, and there's some overlap in style with their Flamenco bag. I would have also recommend looking at the Jil Sander Crescent bag but they seem to have discontinued that one).

impressivelycunty · 16/09/2022 11:42

I also covet the Musubi mini - I'm sure there used to be a tan one which was a much warmer colour. I think if I had to choose from the current range I'd go for the blue which would really stand out and actually looks pretty versatile. Such a gorgeous bag - timeless...

totalnamechanger · 16/09/2022 23:10

Yes, impressively the old tan colour was what I hoped I’d bought online. Alas, no. I feel that making the Musubi bag this clay brown can be likened to what Toast do to their models on a photo shoot.

The blue is so striking but it’s not so readily available (and as I wear that colour blue sometimes (today for one!), I wondered if I needed more of a contrast in a bag). So back to Liberty I went today, intent on purchasing the Orange. Which is bright and happy. Although I wondered if it was a bit risky, so was still in two minds.

The sales advisor went to the cupboard and found that they didn’t have any more orange in stock, except the one on the shop floor. So we looked at that one, turned it over and saw the very blackened corners it had been standing on. The advisor said it was more likely to look like that with the lighter colours - together with the more stretched out leather of the design (I’m sure you know what I mean, Bo?) So that was decisive for me on the brighter or lighter colours. I’m just not meticulous enough to avoid that type of corner damage and discolouration on that kind of bag- especially if worn regularly, which is more likely with a medium size bag than say an evening clutch.

So I bought the black 🤦🏼‍♀️ Which in my defence has a lovely almost dark grey or navy sheen and retains the beauty of the bag. No Toasting done to this model. I was half wondering whether to ring around the London Acne shops on the off chance that they’re housing an old tan or even a burgundy. Failing that though, it looks like it’s the black!

In the meantime, I’ve clearly been googling the other suggestions. The Loewe bucket has gorgeous colours and shape but seems too small 😅. The Jil Sander crescent colours are incredible too- but I can only find a slightly scratched second hand one from a site I don’t know. What sophisticated bags they have, though.

Thanks so, so much for the suggestions and thoughts and the fun they’ve bought! Now I’m aware of Sander, Danse, Yuzefi and other ideas for future requirements 😉

Good to hear you're happy with the black in the end. Sounds like they improved that colour at the expense of the tan colour Hmm. Get yourself some Cadillac Leather Lotion (the green bottle) to keep it nourished as that will help keep depth to the colour and hopefully offer a bit of protection with the more vulnerable aspects of the bag, it's brilliant stuff.

totalnamechanger · 19/09/2022 11:57

Thanks Bo- maintenance advice v much appreciated.

Now any advice on a MacBook bearing tote would be gratefully received (getting in early for Christmas/ Black Friday wish list, so in your own time 😄 ) Have been using a pretty but uncomfortable (chain straps) Sezane shopper for a few years. Considering Mansur Gavriel Everyday Soft Tote in claret. But also concerned re straps digging in. Also have a waterproof backpack, still uncomfortable…

OP posts:
botemp · 19/09/2022 12:29

Hmm, how heavy is it, I assume it's a 13" since you haven't keeld over in agony with a chain strap. I tend to be of the be sensible advice and get an ugly appropriate bag that your back will thank you for.

Knomo Maddox is a fairly good (but kind of boring) option as it is designed with laptop use in mind. The Wandler Joanna is a more lustworthy option but one you probably shouldn't overload.

I'm not a huge fan of Mansur Gavriel as they age so badly. Everlane used to have some bags made for laptops that don't look awful too but I haven't looked at their site in a long time, the Studio looks nice but also possibly quite heavy without anything in it. Cuyana is nice too but difficult to get outside of the US.

Mercurial123 · 19/09/2022 12:59

I have a tote from Kaii, great quality and made for laptops

shop.kaai.eu/

totalnamechanger · 20/09/2022 10:07

Ooo thanks Mercurial - ads for these had been springing up on my phone and I like the shape and the compartments- seems more practical and smarter than some one compartment totes. I wonder if more structure helps to not weigh it down too much? I hadn’t seen any reviews on this brand and don’t know anyone who has one so your thoughts are v welcome.

Thanks for the quality warning on the MG, Bo. I read a blog from a bag maker about quality issues but I thought she might be a little biased 🤔.

It is a bit of a holy grail, the nice looking, practical laptop bag. Mine is a 12.5 inch (I think) air. But I’ve already chipped the outside slightly so some padding would be helpful. Or I’ll have to use my laptop case which weighs down more.

OP posts:
totalnamechanger · 20/09/2022 10:21

I’ve also looked online at the Everlane studio in cognac. I hear it’s meant to be a Celine dupe 😁 It’s annoying that you can’t pop into shops and see actual colour/ feel with many of these brands as the online ordering/ waiting in/ maybe sending back is a bit faffy (pricey) . Was relieved to see the Cadillac lotion wasn’t £95 or something 😉

OP posts:
botemp · 20/09/2022 10:39

I've been to the Kaai shop in Antwerp a few times (they always participate in the Sample Sale week) so surprised to see them mentioned here. I wasn't overly impressed by them, nothing wrong with them either, just feels a bit like one of those brands that struggles to compete within its price point. Also, one of those brands that varies quite a bit from bag to bag.

Yes, I've never ordered anything from Everlane because of sending to and fro to the US feels excessive.

If it's a MacBook air you probably have more options. My laptop is very lightweight as well (under a kilo) and it means it can go in most bags with a neoprene sleeve without being an issue but I don't do a daily commute.

If you want to look secondhand the Celine Phantom Cabas was always a bit of an underrated beauty that can carry a (lightweight) laptop. Also one of those bags that looks more impressive in RL than pictures. There's different sizes though and often other bags are mistakenly listed under that name. A gorgeous The Row green tote bag just showed up in my inbox but I'm guessing that's not within budget...

totalnamechanger · 20/09/2022 10:51

No, the Row isn’t 😄- but the virtual window shopping is great on the way to work. I’ve never bought online second hand but am considering it. In some cases the savings look v tempting.
