Coat to wear with a dress

HesMyLobster · 28/08/2022 12:17

I have my dd's graduation at the end of September.
I've seen lots of her friends' photos over the last couple of months of people in summer dresses which looked perfect but I think the weather will have turned by then?
I have this dress which I think could work but can't figure out what to wear over it.
I've tried a blazer but it didn't quite look right. But will it be cold enough for an actual coat?
What would you wear with it?
(Feel free to add footwear advice too!)

I'm 41, size 16-18, mid length dark hair, prefer plain and neutral colours.
All my coats are black but want to avoid that as I've been told I'll blend into her gown in photos.

Before I saw the photo I was thinking a long trench coat then I saw the photo and see your point. What about a pashmina?

HesMyLobster · 28/08/2022 12:41

I don't want to look to "weddingy" (which may be the problem - I previously wore the dress to a wedding!)
Perhaps I need to rethink the dress . .

I think this coat (have it in my saved items) may look good over that dress, as the spots look cream. It's twill, so lighter than wool but kind of drapey, so not too formal. It's washable too, so all in all, a great transitional cream coat, especially for £59.99.

@Rina66 that's beautiful! Which shop is it? I recognise the website but can't place it!

Oh, glad you like it. H & M, not a lot of sizes in stock but click for an in stock notification as the reviews all say it's very oversized and to size down 2 sizes. Some stores have it in too.

HesMyLobster · 28/08/2022 16:46

I love it. However having looked at the additional photos I see what you mean about oversized!
I think too slouchy makes it almost too casual.
I want smart and formal but not too officey and not too weddingy!

Biker jacket? Unlikely to be cold enough for a proper coat.

Or something like this?

Pinkcadillac · 28/08/2022 20:40

A classic blazer?

blazer

dudsville · 28/08/2022 20:47

That orange coat is so pretty!

I think a blazer with your dress will look too much like a work outfit.

TheQueensCousin · 29/08/2022 13:25

What about a camel colour coat? Looks great with black but not too 'wintery' either.

inappropriateraspberry · 29/08/2022 13:30

Agree that a shorter jacket would look better. A biker/moto style would look nice, or you need something as long, or longer, than the dress.

NewYorkLassie · 29/08/2022 14:03

I find that style and length really difficult to pair with a jacket or coat. I usually go for either a shirt jacket (definitely not hip length) or long (you don’t want to much dress poking out of the bottom).

HesMyLobster · 30/08/2022 19:15

Ooh @TheQueensCousin I've been coveting a quality camel coat for years but never succumbed because black is more practical (I'm a spiller!)
Perhaps this is the excuse I've needed to invest! Anybody seen any fabulous ones before I start searching?

Depending on where the graduation is and time of day, you might not need a coat. If you do, then black would be ideal if you spill things a lot. Sorry I cannot recommend any.

whenwillthemadnessend · 30/08/2022 20:04

I love the m and co one but not keen on the colour. It's too nothingy. It would
Be stunning in a bright block colour.

Camel is so depressing a colour.

If you're getting an actual coat, go bright!

LookItsMeAgain · 31/08/2022 10:34

I think if you're looking for a jacket to wear with that dress, the issue you were finding with a blazer is that it is boxy and not nipped in at the waist.

Would something like one of these work do you think as a jacket:

Option 1

Option 2

Option 3

As for a coat, I'd imagine if you looked for dress coats so something that is fitted and flares out from the waist like https://www.lightinthebox.com/en/p/women-s-winter-fall-elegant-fit-and-flare-swing-long-wool-blend-coat-large-black_p8450078.html?currency=EUR&litb_from=paid_adwords_shopping&sku=1_50%7C2_36724&country_code=ie&utm_source=google_shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=17678464683&adword_mt=&adword_ct=&adword_kw=&adword_pos=&adword_pl=&adword_net=x&adword_tar=&adw_src_id=1463064549_17678464683__&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4-uZz-Lw-QIVEO7tCh1huQ4_EAQYBCABEgL2wfD_BwE this

Sorry - I don't think the link worked in my earlier post

This is the coat with the fitted waist and flared out appearance

Perhaps a Duster Coat www.nancymac.co.uk/collections/coats-dusters

TheQueensCousin · 18/09/2022 14:12

Sorry just getting back to this thread! Did you find the perfect camo coat? It is my absolute favourite colour for a coat and I will tell you now that I have five in different tones of camel!
