Anyone else not enjoy going to beauty salons?

I used to love having facials and stuff like that done, but after too many bad experiences, just don't enjoy going to salons or spas anymore. I've been kinda unlucky in that a lot of the beauty therapists I went to were pretty rude and thought nothing of insulting my skin, eyebrows etc. Its left me feeling a bit burnt and crap about my appearance. I see a lot of people say they dont enjoy the hairdresser, thankfully i actually enjoy going to the hairdresser because the hairdresser I have is amazing

Anyone else had similar experiences and just kinda feel intimidated going to a salon now?

I don't enjoy it either. I love treatments but I often feel places can be snooty, and can leave you feeling judged.

WhereAreWeNow · 19/08/2022 20:33

I never go to salons. I've always hated it. I'd much rather do my own nails and slap on a face mask rather than go to a salon. Hairdresser comes to my house because I hate hair salons too.

WhereAreWeNow · 19/08/2022 20:34

I don't know many women who do GP to beauty salons now I come to think of it.

DramaAlpaca · 19/08/2022 20:38

I think I've been to a beauty salon twice. I didn't enjoy either experience so I haven't been since. I do everything necessary at home. I do go to the hairdressers though, I don't mind that.

MissMaple82 · 19/08/2022 20:42

It's not insulting, they are just commenting on facts in order to create a package or treatment for you, such as you've got oily skin with lots of pimples, or you've got very sparse eyebrows, we can fill them if for you etc etc, you're probably oversensitive and taking it all the wrong way,

declutteringmymind · 19/08/2022 20:55

I find it all a bit too personal, too much hassle and a lot of beauty treatments aren't that effective. I go for certain facials but they're not fun, just a proper going over and getting things done that I can't do at home eg microdermabrasion. Massages are pretty shit too. Although I do fancy a sports massage by a physio.

shewhomustbeEbayed · 19/08/2022 21:05

I used to enjoy treatments and had regular waxes, facials, massages etc but had a really bad eyelash dye where my eyes were left badly stinging so since then have done them and my eyebrows myself.
I also find I now get really impatient and feel quite claustrophobic when thick masks are left on my face.
I now just enjoy a Phat glow facial lying on the bed after washing my hair.

InquiringMinds · 19/08/2022 21:11

I hate it, then began using Treatwell app and have found some lovely home based beauty therapists who left the salons they used to work in for similar reasons you are describing. Much nicer environments and way more relaxed.

FunsizedandFabulous · 19/08/2022 21:15

I find it terrifying. I also think they are expensive and don't work.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/08/2022 21:19

I am currently having a much needed ongoing treatment, at a beauty place and I hate going. The staff are very snooty and unwelcoming but it was the only one I could find near me for this. For most other basic stuff, I have someone mobile do it at home. Its funny, because a friend happened to wait for me this week and was shocked at how unfriendly they were to paying customers

NanaNelly · 19/08/2022 21:22

I didn’t always like them but dodgy upper arms and shoulders now mean that giving myself a good back scrub for example is difficult. So is putting on my bra for eg and I need help with it. Anyway, looking after myself the way I used to now takes it out of me quite a bit and because going to ‘the salon’ is a way of life where I live I now go every month courtesy of my children. I have a body scrub or a hamam, a massage and a facial then anything else on top of that like a manicure/pedicure/waxing I pay for myself. I quite enjoy my treatments but not because I look at it as a morning or afternoon at the spa. I just like the treatments and the spring it puts in my step as a woman who’s getting older and needing a bit of help.

NanaNelly · 19/08/2022 21:24

Sorry, just to add, I don’t find he process or the people intimidating at all.

Cantanka · 19/08/2022 21:27

I enjoy the treatments but always feel awkward paying as not sure if I’m meant to tip or how much etc

dudsville · 20/08/2022 10:09

That sounds awful having aspects of yourself criticised when you're going for something to make you feel good about yourself. I've never had an experience like that but I do not like going, so I stopped. The number of really good massages, facials, hair cuts, etc., I can count on one hand. Staff have always been nice to me, but that's not enough. I've been doing my own facials and hair cuts, etc., for years now and I get so many compliments before a person knows I do it myself. I highly recommend it.

Or they might be making it up in the hope of selling you more money.
Hairdressers do this by insulting the state of your hair. No, I don't want to buy their expensive creams. I stop going to ones who do that.

VacayingInTheHamptons · 20/08/2022 20:57

It’s one of my worst nightmares, I hate strangers touching me. 😬

I’ve never been to a beauty salon. My friend is a hairdresser so does my hair. My skin is pretty good and if it’s ever not, I’ll just have to look shit because no stranger is touching my face. 😂

echoisland11 · 20/08/2022 21:25

Thanks everyone, it's reassuring to know I'm not the only one that feels like this. 😂😂❤

@MissMaple82 nope I think I can tell the difference. One therapist told me my eyebrows were "a disgrace", if it were something as polite as telling me my eyebrows were just sparse I would have no problem with that

Never been to one. Or a spa. Don't appeal.

boredasusual · 20/08/2022 21:52

Shop around until you find one that listens to what you want and gives you that rather than offering advice on everything else. I had a bad experience at one place and never went back. Told the next place about that experience and that I didn't want judging and she was brilliant.

toffeechai · 20/08/2022 22:11

I like having someone else do my nails but I find the small talk utterly exhausting.

littlemisslozza · 20/08/2022 22:19

Not my thing at all I'm afraid. I don't find a stranger massaging me relaxing, and I'd rather curl up with a good book than make small talk. Same with hairdressers so I trim my own hair (it's straight) and paint my own nails!

sonjadog · 20/08/2022 22:29

I get my eyebrows shaped and my lashes dyed every 6-8 weeks and I find it quite painful, so can’t say I enjoy going much! I have been to many different salons over the years and they vary hugely. So if you don’t like one, then you may well like another. I sometimes get other treatments such as a pedicure but I have never done the «treat» type things they offer. Generally I think those are too expensive for too little result.

PumpkinDart · 21/08/2022 00:20

I'm always itching to leave, I like the end result but I get anxious and not relaxed although being waxed tends not to be a relaxing process.

redferrari · 21/08/2022 09:04

Yes I find it very annoying and too personals. Facials are the worst especially when they try to remove the white heads. Often leaves me with a headache. I think they do try and be harsh so you would come for a package to fix things or sell more products (always dermologica which is pretty basic I feel)
