Anyone else not enjoy going to beauty salons?

I used to love having facials and stuff like that done, but after too many bad experiences, just don't enjoy going to salons or spas anymore. I've been kinda unlucky in that a lot of the beauty therapists I went to were pretty rude and thought nothing of insulting my skin, eyebrows etc. Its left me feeling a bit burnt and crap about my appearance. I see a lot of people say they dont enjoy the hairdresser, thankfully i actually enjoy going to the hairdresser because the hairdresser I have is amazing

Anyone else had similar experiences and just kinda feel intimidated going to a salon now?

Me. I hate being touched, hate the time it takes, hate how much it costs to look no different.

I’ve also started volunteering and just CBA. I do need to go to the hairdressers though and I do get my nails done occasionally.

helloagainsun · 21/08/2022 10:34

I go to a very nice salon and have an eye brow wax and upper lip wax every month. If I had more disposable income I'd have a facial.

I don't particularly like having to make small talk when I have my nails done. That's because I can be quite shy and run out of things to say.

Baldieheid · 21/08/2022 11:48

I've had a couple of facials, which were given to me as gifts. I really liked the beauty therapist, she was friendly and gave really good advice, etc, but I just don't see the need to repeat them. I'm low maintenance and am happy doing facials at home. I'm absolutely not interested in any body treatments as I dislike being touched by strangers. The experiences I had were pleasant, but not worth me forking out for.

LoobyDop · 21/08/2022 13:22

I only ever used to go for painful things, so never enjoyed it. Then during lockdown I had no choice but to learn to do my own waxing, and I’d rather do that than risk catching covid or even a cold immediately before going on holiday, so I probably won’t go to one again.

helloagainsun · 21/08/2022 13:46

@Baldieheid - I thought I was the only one that didn't like massages. I don't like strangers touching my back.

sammysal · 21/08/2022 13:53

You're not alone on the rude comments - definitely had this too! I don't tip / use them again, and conversely the people who don't make me feel like crap I use again and tip. Vote with your feet!

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/08/2022 13:59

Generally I love them but one of the therapists blatantly looked me up & down with a face on her when I was last there. I’m a size 6 and some women don’t take it well.

Usually therapists are so nice though & I like a chat about skincare.

Lochnesslassie · 21/08/2022 14:57

My DH has a fairly well off friend who likes to treat all the women in the group to spa days while the men go doing "manly" things.

I would rather stick pins in my eyes but long ago ran out of excuses. I find it awkward, uncomfortable and a total waste of money.

The others all love it but they are all girly and feminine, I'm definitely not!! And I hate it when they start asking my skin care routine, apart from soap and water twice a day I don't have one

Since I moved back to 🇬🇧, I’ve tried lots of local beauty treatments but I just don’t find the staff that well trained, that enthusiastic and I always feel ripped off. The last pedi I had was quite nice at the time, but lasted a week and cost £50.

After trying many, I do my own:

Keratin treatments - much better than any hairdresser I’ve paid £120-200 to do.

Own mani and pedi with Dior products

Own laser/ hair removal treatments with Philips Lumea.

Own facials using Korean face steamer, own masks and face products.

I use a NuFace

Own self tanning with St.Tropez gradual shower tan, and face mist

Pluck my own eyebrows between salon (approx every 3-4 months)

Outsouced:

I get my hair cut and coloured

Have, on occasion had a lash lift. I may do it again

Sometimes have a brow tint and shape. Had brow lamination, but it dried them out too much.

Whitehorsegirl · 21/08/2022 15:38

The only time I booked a facial the therapist spent most of the time trying to sell me some products. A facial should be relaxing not a marketing exercise that adds stress to my day...

I tried again and had my nails and feet done and although the result looked good and the nail polish lasted much longer then when I do it, it was also quite unpleasant and a bit painful to have a pedicure done by them and it just took forever.

Generally I just find beauty salons expensive and pointless.

I have my eyebrows tinted on occasion but it is perfectly easy to just get an appointment at the make- up counter in big department stores to get that done well and quickly.

SundayTeatime · 21/08/2022 15:42

I’ve never been. I don’t know anyone who goes.

Solosunrise · 21/08/2022 15:46

I don't go any more. I had my legs waxed a few times and also found them rude. I went to more than one place and got the distinct impression they thought that only pretty young women were worth the bother. My hairdresser is lovely and comes to my house.

MarshaMelrose · 21/08/2022 15:49

I have my eyelashes done every month. The woman's really nice. We have a chat. So I enjoy it but I'd be so much happier if I needed no assistance with my looks at all!

Kanaloa · 21/08/2022 15:50

I don’t like it, or even having my hair cut. I hate the faff and how long it all takes.

It also annoys me when they make comments, which I’ve found many hairdressers and beauticians do. I think it’s to make you feel like they’ve done a better job/done you a favour. When they start off by going ‘ohh your eyebrows are SOOO PATCHY and your hair is sooo BAD’ then their substandard or very basic work is suddenly amazing because you looked so hideous before.

Vanderpump · 21/08/2022 16:51

I love it

WagtheDog · 21/08/2022 17:00

I hate it. I also hate the hairdressers.

PlattyJubes · 21/08/2022 17:33

I haven't been to one in over 10 years after my last experience. I'd been v unwell for over a year. Finally diagnosed with a chronic, disabling and life changing illness and had treated myself to a massage at a local luxury spa within a hotel. The massage was ok but afterwards the therapist gave me "feedback", which I hadn't asked for!. Told me what I needed to "work" on, such as breathing and posture. This was quite unsolicited and left me feeling like shit, so much so that I was in tears on the drive home. Admittedly I was quite emotionally fragile but I had gone for relaxation not to be lectured on my physical shortcomings, which were actually primarily related to my illness.

I do realise that not all beauty therapists are like this btw, but it has left me with an aversion to this day.

90redbaloons · 21/08/2022 17:57

I also don't enjoy it too much, it's the cost element for me along with the fact I never really had any treatment that wowed me that much that I haven't been able to do myself at home

This. I am happy to pay for a really great treatment and great service, however it feels difficult to find either to those these days. I have tried several beauty salons in my town, particularly two that market themselves as 5*, and the reality was far from it, and as you say doing your own treatment at home is just as good and far cheaper.

MinaN · 21/08/2022 19:55

love going to beauty salons but have seen the same lady for my hair, nails and eyelashes since i was 15! Completely understand how so many don't enjoy them however as have heard of so many rude beauty therapists and people have left feeling completely judged. Maybe trying to find a place you feel comfortable and relaxed if you are wanting treatments etc done but if you are not missing them i would save the money and do your own things at home!
