Everyone is really tanned!

Maybe I didn't notice this over other summers, but I am seeing a lot of tans around, quite deep ones, that don't look fake.
Mostly younger women and girls, I am wondering if the cautions about sun damage have fallen out of trend? Or is this some exceptionally awesome bottled stuff?
I'm sure I've never seen so many tanned people for years. One friend of ours (guy in his 40's) turned up to visit with a deep tan that he said occurred in one day walking around Liverpool! So yeh, I get we have had some pretty strong sun and heat this year but it's like the warnings about sunscreen and UV damage have vanished.

Is anyone else noticing this? There's definitely always been a weird set of contradictions regarding sun tans - on the one hand most people will admit to being wary of cell damage and skin ageing, but on the other it seems just fine if you get your tan on a luxury holiday.
Scandinavians (I am generalising, I know!) don't seem scared of tans, nor those who enjoy yachts. Perhaps we lose our trepidation in the right situations...

I'm waiting anxiously to get a sun-related lesion removed & biopsied from my right leg... cannot believe ppl don't care more about the dangers.

ChickPizz · 13/08/2022 21:48

I love a tan, but mine only comes from a bottle these days. I can’t believe people still use sun beds?! Retro!

Harridan1981 · 14/08/2022 12:58

I love skinny tan too, old school coconut water one

schmalex · 14/08/2022 15:26

When I lived in France everyone was so tanned. Even the doctor was telling my husband he needed to get in the sun more because he was too pale!

I do also think fake tans have improved a lot. I really like Coco & Eve mousse - I haven't had any issues with streaks and it doesn't smell horrible either.

Happymum12345 · 14/08/2022 17:43

I’ve been using factor 50 sunscreen on me and my dc, and we’re all very tanned now. I’ve tried my best to avoid the hottest parts of the day too.

lightisnotwhite · 15/08/2022 10:27

I’ve just got back from two weeks in the Med and I’m pretty brown - olive skinned anyway.
No one has commented as everyone else is so tanned this year!

Purpleberet · 15/08/2022 22:00

I can’t be fucked with fake tan, it’s too much effort for me!
im really worried about sun damage however I love the hot weather and could lie in the sun day on day out. I wear at least factor 50 to sunbathe and I still tan easily.

re how many people about seem to be tanned. I’m genuinely shocked at how many people still use sunbeds, I thought they were a thing of the past. All ages including people who preach about looking after their body, it seems so risky to me but they will say they only do a few minutes

SimonaRazowska · 15/08/2022 22:11

I am quite tanned this year

Use factor 50 every day

But am outside a lot (in my spare time I like to be outside)

It's been wall to wall sunshine here for the past 2 months (South coast)

I think it's just the weather!

Radyward · 15/08/2022 22:37

Im irish . Will tan eventually but burn first. I absolutely hate sunburn. Went on holiday to portugal. Despite my best efforts the very last day. I Burnt just a little. Thought it looked awful. So Unhealthy.. i would prefer to stay pale BUT I dont i love fake tan.my absolute favourite is the St tropez watermelon gradual tan mousse.omg so.many people think its real.. i put it on my face and all
I just feel better with it on . Have tried Bondi Sands and Vita Liberata and not great on pasty me But must work for others . Going to investigate the coco and eve one asap !

LBF2020 · 15/08/2022 22:41

I have been using the sun beds this year for the first time in many years as I'm trying to build a tan for wedding. It's made a massive difference to my skin (acne is settled and eczema has disappeared.)
I understand they are very bad for you, but the difference it has made to my skin (in the short term) is incredible.

FromEden · 15/08/2022 22:43

I live in a hot climate and if I'm out in the sun I do wear factor 30 or 50 but end up with a tan anyway. It's pretty unavoidable with strong sun, unless I become a hermit and never go outside. Even going outside when the UV levels are low in the evening still results in a tan. Once you don't get burnt I don't see the issue, it's a natural reaction to the sun.

FromEden · 15/08/2022 22:45

Also, I think the health issues caused by a lack of sun exposure and vitamin d deficiency are far worse than being tanned and more common that skin cancer. There is a happy medium

Lovetok · 15/08/2022 22:53

@SommerTen so worrying for you, so sorry to hear this. My sister had a stage 0 lesion removed a few years ago - lucky they caught it early. She’s had to change her whole lifestyle, can’t be in the sun at all.

The bride and groom at a wedding I was at recently had gone on holiday the week before for the sole purpose of tanning. The bride’s tan was so dark it looked odd, IMO. And I’ve learnt so much about skincare in the last few years, I just see a dark tan like that and think ‘wrinkles/cancer’ I don’t understand why people do it.

LittleGreenBeetle · 15/08/2022 22:56

It's been a sustained sunny summer this year, in case you hadn't noticed!

IWishIWasABaller · 15/08/2022 23:02

I definitely noticed the same thing this summer abroad . Women and girls in the tinest bikinis sunbathing from 9am till 7pm barely moving only to apply suncream . Never saw such tanned people in my life recognized many as sunbed colour definitely none with fake tan unless they were absolute experts at applying !! Also spotted several applying layers of babyoil I thought that carry on had gone out of fashion in the 80's

Agree that there has been a massive uptake in sunbed usage too I was getting my nails done recently and the amount of people using the sunbeds was incredible. The girls working there told me it's open from 7am till 10 pm and there is a constant stream of people using the beds. I asked so people care about the cancer risk anymore and they said in their opinion people are more concerned with their short-term appearance than the long term effects

apairofblueeyes100 · 16/08/2022 10:14

My 21 year old dd is now using tanning beds.

I have done my best to advise her not to and outlined the risks to her health and also her future skin from a cosmetic view.

I have never used them myself and would much rather she fake tanned but she sadly won't heed my words.

downfield · 16/08/2022 10:16

i guess love island influence, people are very tanned on that

GalactatingGoddess · 16/08/2022 10:22

I am very tanned, also mixed ethnicity black and Asian though so I tan easily.

Maybe it's because people weren't going away over the last couple of years as much so less tanning prep and real tanning
