Everyone is really tanned!

Maybe I didn't notice this over other summers, but I am seeing a lot of tans around, quite deep ones, that don't look fake.
Mostly younger women and girls, I am wondering if the cautions about sun damage have fallen out of trend? Or is this some exceptionally awesome bottled stuff?
I'm sure I've never seen so many tanned people for years. One friend of ours (guy in his 40's) turned up to visit with a deep tan that he said occurred in one day walking around Liverpool! So yeh, I get we have had some pretty strong sun and heat this year but it's like the warnings about sunscreen and UV damage have vanished.

Is anyone else noticing this? There's definitely always been a weird set of contradictions regarding sun tans - on the one hand most people will admit to being wary of cell damage and skin ageing, but on the other it seems just fine if you get your tan on a luxury holiday.
Scandinavians (I am generalising, I know!) don't seem scared of tans, nor those who enjoy yachts. Perhaps we lose our trepidation in the right situations...

I was young in the 90s and it blows my mind that anyone is still using sunbeds.

hedgehogger1 · 12/08/2022 22:35

I don't tan. Seem to have passed it on to my kids. My arms are browner than my (never sees daylight) belly, but without that you wouldn't know

ToooOldForThis · 12/08/2022 22:43

I live in a small town, the high street has its fair share of empty units and there can be quite a fast turnover of shops coming and going. Our demographic is quite elderly (only Tory area for miles around, sigh)
Anyway a really big unit became empty a couple of years ago and a tanning place moved in and it's still going strong! I was so surprised I thought tanning places had disappeared in the 80s!

A woman I knew died, age 29, from skin cancer after too much sunbed use. It's a real shame. It was in the newspapers at the time, her name was Zita if anyone remembers.

I'm not a fan of fake tan lotions and potions but it's at least a safer option.

Skinny Tan Gradual Tanner and Accelerator - Milk Chocolate is the best tanner I’ve used. It’s fool proof, so easy to apply, dries quickly and has a really minimal fake tan smell! It makes me the same colour as my husband who tans naturally and really easily.

anglesee · 13/08/2022 07:41

It's been hot. It's hard to
Not get a tan if you're out and about

There's nothing wrong with that. Going on sunbeds, burning, not wearing a factor
Are dangerous but skin going darker in summer
Is ok

MySleevesMayBeGreen · 12/08/2022 14:08

Fake tans are much, much better and natural looking that they used to be.
I get comments about my tanned legs and ooh you’ve gone brown in the sun- it’s fake.

What fake tan do you use?

gunnersgold · 13/08/2022 09:17

My tan is fake but looks real , there are such good ones now . Most young people fake tan !

My skin would never go the colour of bondi sands even after a week in the Maldives !

WisteriaHysteria22 · 13/08/2022 09:41

A lot of people have some olive in their skin me and DC have been slathered in factor 50 UVA and B and after going to Europe in May plus this summer we both looked pretty tanned. We’ll my DC’s lower legs do as they’re the only bit that’s not been covered by clothing or a wet suit. DC has been wearing a mineral sunscreen like emulsion and it has still caught them from just been out and out which what the summer hols are all about!

WisteriaHysteria22 · 13/08/2022 09:44

*pretty tanned due to having some dark in our skins, we have some Southern Slavic, Spanish and African heritage.

CherryogDog · 13/08/2022 09:56

I'm pale skinned red (well grey now) and spend a lot of time outside.
My arms have a light tan and plenty of freckles. My face makes me look like an ruddy faced alcoholic (I was once asked if I had a drink problem, I'm virtually tea total). My legs just stay white bar about 6 freckles on my knees, or if I lie in the sun they just burn.
Whatever fake tan I use on my legs (never mind that I can't blend it into my feet/ankles) it's always a different colour to my arms.
Any one similar to me found anything that works?

Changemaname1 · 13/08/2022 10:07

Another one who has finally found a decent fake tan ! Everyone complimenting me on my nice tan after a holiday - completely fake 🤣

I don’t like sunbathing , I don’t really burn easily I just don’t really tan easily either so not worth the potential damage . Always wear spf on my face to ( which does actually tan but I dont want the damage )

another who can’t believe sun beds are still a thing they are so bad for you

XingMing · 13/08/2022 12:02

I'm 66, and my skin is still pretty decent after a life in which I have ended up with a tan every summer. But my skin is quite olive, like most of my mother's family.

This spring I had a course of medically-supervised UVB treatments to clear up an immune eczema problem. I had a Mediterranean holiday booked and the nurses said to use SPF30 on arms and legs if exposed. I remembered for a few days but when I came back the nurse checked me over and said I didn't need any more UV from them for now (though I may have to return in winter). Humans do actually need exposure to the sun... just not an excess. There's a balance between melanoma and pallor.

SOLD....to the pasty fucker in the shade! 😄

AgnesNaismith · 13/08/2022 14:16

Good luck finding it @RestingMurderousFace they don’t appear to sell it on the site anymore and the only availability is on Amazon…..which I wouldn’t trust as legit.

Would anyone else care to share which tan they use to make them magnificently and naturally bronzed?

Yes me too. Seems like a new generation needs to have the danger message put across a lot more!

megletthesecond · 13/08/2022 14:35

For the first time in my 40 years I have non milk bottle legs. Bought a lumea in lockdown so I'm no longer waxing off the top later of skin. My legs are now rich tea coloured. Face always has sunblock on it.

All the best stuff gets discontinued. 🙄

I went for the Vita Liberata colourless gradual tanner instead, it gets good reviews. Think the guide colours irritate my skin so we shall see how I get on with this one.

Yes, please people do share your fake tan revelations!

I got it for £4 in B and M just recently! I bought 5 of them once I realised how good it was! Might go back for more!

Doggydarling · 13/08/2022 15:22

Coincidentally I had my hair done yesterday and the hairdresser told me she's put a warning on her social media for the blondes she colours to cover their hair while using sunbeds, I was surprised but she said the numbers of people in their early twenties to mid thirties using them has increased dramatically. The risks just don't bother them, having the 'right' look is more important. I'm 51 and love the sun but now spend most of the time in the shade c/w hat, sunscreen and wearing long sleeved linen tops!!!

Mallanie · 13/08/2022 15:29

We all lived through two years of being told we might die imminently. We’re broke, can’t buy homes, the economy is in the toilet and the world
is going to hell in a handcart

Difficult to worry about a future dodgy mole tbh. I bet smoking is on the rise too. We’re going out with a bang

safetyfreak · 13/08/2022 15:31

I am pale but have been using fake tan on my arms/legs.

I cant believe people are still using sunbeds when fake tan is about.

Violetparis · 13/08/2022 15:45

I like the Garnier Summer Body Light fake tan, cheap and smells nice too. I only put it on my legs so they are not like milk bottles when I bare them on holiday.

Thatboymum · 12/08/2022 18:26

I’m in my early 30s and have just in the last year started using 2 6 min sunbeds a week And loads of moisturising I’m a really nice colour now I’m normaly super pale , it all started after a holiday abroad and wanting to upkeep the colour , I do use suncream in the sun obviously and im aware of the risks of sunbeds but I like how it looks and makes me feel, During lockdown I used fox tan spray and lay in the garden and was super dark so try that if you want a more natural tan as it’s amazing

Please don't do this. White skin is way more attractive than scarring from melanoma surgery.
