Who's up for a wedding dress challenge?

Ritasdaughter1969 · 15/06/2022 08:43

OK, I get married in Italy in 3 weeks, 2 years ago I bought a dress, to be fair I wasn't 100% convinced when I bought it, but teenage daughters encouraged me - different from last time mum, suits the venue mum, different for you mum....you get what I mean.

Anyway yesterday went for dress fitting, on my own, I hate it. The Seamstress seems to think it will be OK when she's finished but I'm not convinced, but after spending close to £2k I don't know what to do. Wear it, feel uncomfortable and never want to look at the photos or get another dress.

Bearing in mind I only have 2 weeks before we fly out, what would you do?

If I go down the new dress route who can make suggestions?

I'm 5'2", size 14 sometimes a 16 to allow for my ample bust, hour glass figure (as in I have a good waist). V necks and wrap dresses suit me, a line to cover my mum tum.

I've already looked at Nancy Mac and Needle and Thread and whilst I like them they're nit right.

Wedding on a cliff in Capri , husband to be wearing cream suit and blue bow tie. Daughters wearing cornflour blue full length dresses.

Any suggestions welcome please?

I will be back later off now to queue to see Harry Styles tonight, wish me luck!

Goodness you look fabulous in that dress!
do you think it’s because you bought it so long ago? I’m getting married in 6 weeks (in Italy!) and I’ve tried my dress on so many times I’m kind of changing my mind! I’m keeping it though as I think it’s just familiarity.

ISeeTheLight · 15/06/2022 13:39

No suggestions sorry, but your dress is gorgeous!! What is it that you hate about it?

cessie322 · 15/06/2022 13:42

I'm no help because I love it on you too!

Lotsofpots · 15/06/2022 13:43

The dress is beautiful on you. BUT the sleeves are aging - I think if you could have the floaty sleeves removed it would feel like a different dress.

You figure looks divine in it!

1VY · 15/06/2022 13:45

Well that dress fits you well and it’s flattering.

But if you don’t like it there’s no point in everyone here telling you it’s lovely , it’s you who is wearing it.

My guess is that it’s the wrong style personality for you. What do you wear the rest of the time, at home / work / going out ?

Bunce1 · 15/06/2022 13:45

THE DRESS AND YOU ARE BEYONG GORGEOUS. BEYOND!!!

one small fix…

keep the current dress and have the sleeves shorted to just below the elbow and have them narrow not flared. The sleeves are not the right proportion for the rest of the dress.

minipie · 15/06/2022 13:46

Well don’t wear a dress you hate, that will spoil the day

BUT why do you hate it? Maybe it could be altered into something you like or even love? For £2k I would want to use it!!

If it was me I think I’d ask the seamstress to remove the sheer sleeves, or most of them leaving a little cap sleeve maybe. Especially for an Italy wedding. Maybe use some of that fabric to make a little sheer panel to cover a bit of cleavage (this would also give you the option of a more balconette bra which might change the shape/look?)

What is it you don’t like and what sort of thing would you be looking for instead?

ShirleyPhallus · 15/06/2022 13:46

I also think that dress is lovely on you. What kind of thing would you like instead?

MrsMitford3 · 15/06/2022 13:47

I love your dress-beautiful and really suits your figure.

Maybe chop sleeves to little cap just below the pattern?

Maybe you are just having last minute jitters? Because the dress stunning!!!

JustSmallFry · 15/06/2022 13:47

I think it looks great. Is there anything specific you have doubts about? I agree that maybe the sleeves cold go.

I also had doubts about my wedding dress before the wedding. Maybe it's just a stage we all go through

aquamarine1 · 15/06/2022 13:48

You look amazing in that dress

Cotherstone · 15/06/2022 13:48

That dress looks AMAZING on you!

What is it you don’t like? Because from an outsider perspective it’s absolutely beautiful and makes your figure gorgeous

RedCarsGoFaster · 15/06/2022 13:48

The dress is gorgeous - have you asked them to shorten the arms as well? They look a bit baggy.

What is it that you don't like?

FlatBottomedGirl · 15/06/2022 13:51

The sleeves don't work but I like everything else. I would remove sleeves entirely. Your description of what you are looking for matches up to the dress well! It's very flattering and suits your figure perfectly. Have a fabulous day safe in the knowledge you look great.

I love this first one. I've looked at it before and thought how lovely it is x

I do think this looks fab though! Beautiful dress and your figure looks great! Congrats on your wedding x

sorryiasked · 15/06/2022 14:15

I think the dress looks lovely but would be amazing without the sleeves.
But if you still hate it that much after alterations then you're going to have to look for something else.
Difficult to suggest anything without knowing what you dislike about it.

You look stunning!! I think the dress is beautiful.

I do agree with a previous poster. I think if you could get rid of the sleeves, it would be even better!

TunaSalad · 15/06/2022 14:26

The dress is FANTASTIC honestly you look great in it. I agree with others about the sleeves, either lose them altogether or have narrow just past elbow sleeves. The voluminous wrists are the only bit of the dress I don't like.

imperialminty · 15/06/2022 14:29

Gosh, you look incredible! It's perfect for the wedding you describe! I would also maybe take the sleeves off if you feel a bit overwhelmed by it, but I really think you should wear it.

Maybe ask why you don't like it? Is it very different for you? Is it a case of feeling silly/too much dress? I feel a bit like that in my wedding dress, which is a real ballgown princess number. I sometimes think is it too silly to dress up so much! But I keep thinking that it's for one day, and I want to have fun and push the boat out with what I'm wearing. Embrace it I would say!

Unless you really, really hate it. Then I would look at other dresses just so you don't always think about your day and associate it with a dress you hate, which would be such a shame. But I do wonder if you just feel a bit self-conscious because you never wear things like this in every day life (who does?!) and if thats the case, have fun I say!

Sprig1 · 15/06/2022 14:30

You look fabulous in the dress. I agree that you could lose the sleeves/shorten them/slim them down to improve it further.

Ritasdaughter1969 · 15/06/2022 14:35

Thanks all. All I see when I look at it is huge boobs. I've had the sleeves shortened to the length of my arms, I wanted the sleeves because no doubt prickly heat will be all over my arms.

In real life I would never wear lace/tule but didn't want anything similar to my previous dress.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look at them once I get home this evening
