Who's up for a wedding dress challenge?

OK, I get married in Italy in 3 weeks, 2 years ago I bought a dress, to be fair I wasn't 100% convinced when I bought it, but teenage daughters encouraged me - different from last time mum, suits the venue mum, different for you mum....you get what I mean.

Anyway yesterday went for dress fitting, on my own, I hate it. The Seamstress seems to think it will be OK when she's finished but I'm not convinced, but after spending close to £2k I don't know what to do. Wear it, feel uncomfortable and never want to look at the photos or get another dress.

Bearing in mind I only have 2 weeks before we fly out, what would you do?

If I go down the new dress route who can make suggestions?

I'm 5'2", size 14 sometimes a 16 to allow for my ample bust, hour glass figure (as in I have a good waist). V necks and wrap dresses suit me, a line to cover my mum tum.

I've already looked at Nancy Mac and Needle and Thread and whilst I like them they're nit right.

Wedding on a cliff in Capri , husband to be wearing cream suit and blue bow tie. Daughters wearing cornflour blue full length dresses.

Any suggestions welcome please?

I will be back later off now to queue to see Harry Styles tonight, wish me luck!

I used to get terrible prickly heat on the tops of my arms, until I changed my sun cream. I bought an expensive sun oil thing that I’ll find the name of if you’re interested?

Sorry to come back to you, do you happen to know the name of the oil - I'm up for trying everything. Thank you

It's a beautiful dress that suits your lovely figure

Are you sure its prickly heat and not PMLU?

Because prickly heat tends to happen on places where the sweat can’t evaporate, like back torso.

Polymorphic light eruption happens on parts of the body that haven’t been exposed to the sun all year and then suddenly we get a nice sunny day. So top half of legs and arms are classic.

This is my explanation as a sufferer, im sure there is a better way of putting it.

I know its a bit off topic but if you know what’s causing it you can prevent it. And prickly heat powder wont help if its not PH.

HTH

Having looked this up, I'd never heard of it before, I think this might well be what I get on my face, I have 2 lovely scabs on my temples from being out in the sun on Wednesday, so I can look into that a bit more thank you.

It's definitely prickly heat that I get on my arms though and even though I start to take antihistamine a few weeks before we go away to get it into my system my arms are always affected and it gets worse as the holiday goes on, I will try some different suncream just on the off chance that the one I use is making matters worse.

Thank you

Where is the dress from op?

You look beautiful btw, and I agree that no sleeves would make it look less fussy

It's an Essence of Australia I think

I love the dress! I agree with your daughters that it looks suitable for a hot venue as it looks nice and floaty. My dress was thick and weighed a tonne!
I wouldn't removed the built in cups, I think it could compromise the shape. I don't think you look too busty at all, honestly.
I think if anything the sleeves make it look a bit busy, I would be inclined to have them shortened to elbow length and made floaty.
I hope you find the right solution anyway and have a lovely day!

Ritasdaughter1969 · 18/06/2022 12:06

Thank you for all your help.

I have decided on covering all bases - but the sleeves will be staying, I discussed it with my daughters and they both love the sleeves - as I said they have been shortened now so they stop at my wrists and are not perhaps as overpowering as they appear in this photo.

I have ordered Spanx bodysuit with plunge front and low back, in the hope any padding or moulding is thinner than the cups in the dress, and that it will lift the girls up.

I have also ordered some stick on contraption as a fall back and some tape so I can have a play around for the best result.

I will get the prickly heat powder and try out some new suncream.

And I have picked out another dress just in case non of the above make it any better.

Thank you all again x

Those dresses from Asos are not going to compare to a £2k dress, they will feel quite cheep in compasison.

Goodness no of course not but if I were spending £2,000 on a dress for a second wedding I personally wouldn't have even looked at a "wedding dress". That budget would get something fabulous from say Erdem or Eponine. That dress isn't anything special.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 18/06/2022 13:19

Sorry, that was a bit harsh. I don't like "wedding dresses" . They're all much of a muchness, will never be worn again and there are so many fabulous dresses which could be bought on a "wedding dress" budget.

OompaLoompaa · 18/06/2022 13:19

I read your update but I think flutter sleeves would look nice and maybe a slight alteration to show less cleavage.

Fair comment.

But we don't always know people's circumstances, now or years ago, and everyone has different ideas of what should be worn to a wedding.

Glimpsing at the 2 retailers you mention, In case they had anything suitable for my standby dress, I have to say I wouldn't have been able to spend my budget at either. But I get your point I could have bought a really nice non wedding dress somewhere else, but I probably wouldn't have got the opportunity to wear something "that special" again either.
