Which luxury watch brand?

JuneyJune · 08/06/2022 16:03

I'm an Apple Watch kind of girl but my mum is insisting in buying me a "proper" watch.

So just that really.

If you have a flash watch - which and why?

Do they hold value?

I sort of think I'll get one I can just wear rather than keep it for special occasions. (When I tend to borrow a lovely Cartier one of my Mum's anyway.....)

I'd forgotten these, they are to die for.

I love my Omega constellation which I’ve had for 20 plus years and wear every day and it isn’t scratched or anything like a PP describes theirs as. Ideally I’d also like a Tank.

This has triggered some watch envy, having just stumbled across the Rolex Perpetual in turquoise.

Although I fear it may be one of those bizarre purchases where you need to take the Rolex dealer on a luxury week in St Bart's before they'll consider selling you one. That thread was very eye opening.

I'd love a Chopard watch. A friend has one and I covet it.

This one's nice www.chopard.com/en-gb/watch/388563-6014.html

I’m lucky that I bought most of mine before these sort of antics were necessary. I really wouldn’t want to play such stupid games to buy what’s a relatively “normal” watch.

Baystard · 09/06/2022 20:59

Another vote for Tag aquaracer 😊

JuneyJune · 09/06/2022 21:16

Thanks so much all.

It's funny a PP mentioned a memory of her Dad with one type of watch.

I can vividly remember the day my Dad bought his Tag watch (mens Aquaracer which I now have as he passed away not long ago) I was only young, maybe 8. So I think that's why I see Tags as a main brand.

Also have a few other watches of his, some "better" than the Tag but it's the one I think of as 'his'.

Haha so true!

We bought two wedding rings, a Tudor and a different Rolex before I got my Datejust

JaceLancs · 09/06/2022 23:20

I think it’s a family thing too
DM was bought a gold omega watch for her 21st birthday by my grandparents
DF had an omega he bought overseas in the 1940s
DB inherited a gold omega from Grandpa
I was the only family member without a ‘good’ watch so had to buy my own!!!

"Replica" = FAKE.

red4321 · 10/01/2023 18:33

Having just been burgled and lost various watches, the replica option looks quite attractive!

ttcstop · 10/01/2023 21:08

I have a Hermes, Cartier, Breitling and Rolex

I have them because they are all great for different occasions.

The Breitling is my favourite - but if you want something that can go easily from day to night then get Cartier.

Rolex holds its value more than any other brand but of course isn't exactly exclusive! So if you don't mind it being common then I'd for that if you're after value holding

Thefailinghousewife · 10/01/2023 21:42

I’ve got the Rolex datejust with the jubilee strap and diamond Bezel. I love it so much, but if I had unlimited budget I would def get a Patek Phillippe. They are bloody lovely! My rich (but an absolute wanker) ex used to collect watches and the things he used to have to do to get on waiting lists was ridiculous. He would spend fortunes on other items, lend sales reps his cars, take them to events with him……. It was frigging exhausting. They blacklist you if they hear you sell any of them too!

NotMyDayJob · 10/01/2023 21:49

I was very lucky that DH got my a datejust (two tone jubilee bracelet, diamond numbers, mother of pearl dial) for a special occasion last year but I'm under no illusion that it wasn't also as part of some strategy to get the rolex he wanted

pepperaunt · 10/01/2023 23:47

I see someone has just mentioned Chopard. I have 2 Happy Sport which I love, and find you don’t se them in other wrists too often

Ours are in a bolted down safe and all fully insured. Definitely the best option!

Boshi · 11/01/2023 13:08

Shocked at all these rolex stories! My DH bought a few in the last 8 years and all this was def not necessary although he was on waitlists

Rolex are having a laugh, people will buy other Rolexes to spend more money on the rolex they want 😵‍💫 just go for a more accessible brand, they’re all the same once they’re on your wrist

OP out of interest what did you go for?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 11/01/2023 16:57

I know this is an old thread, but I have an Hermès Heure H, which I absolutely love. I've got the medium size with the orange strap and I feel like it just elevates every outfit that I wear.

Greensalad · 11/01/2023 17:11

I have two Rado watches.. stylish discreet increase in value.. And always admired

pocketvenuss · 11/01/2023 17:54

Patek is the top of the pile. Rolex hold their value. Omega are a solid bet

Sobekneferu · 12/01/2023 03:07

Cartier, check out the Tank line

SirenDiMare · 17/06/2024 16:30

I quite recently took my vintage Audemars Piguet watch to a watchmaker, and he said the mechanics of it was extremely sophisticated and high quality. That he hadn't encountered a wrist watch of this caliber in ages. So, I would recommend Audemars Piguet. They are known for their quality and timelessness anyway, but it was nice to have it verified by a professional.

I also really like:
Chopard
Omega
Piaget

TotteringByRosie · 23/06/2024 21:14

I received a Rolex for a big birthday 15 years ago. It cost £5,000 new and I've recently had it valued at £16,000. Most importantly, I still love wearing it every day.
