Which luxury watch brand?

I'm an Apple Watch kind of girl but my mum is insisting in buying me a "proper" watch.

So just that really.

If you have a flash watch - which and why?

Do they hold value?

I sort of think I'll get one I can just wear rather than keep it for special occasions. (When I tend to borrow a lovely Cartier one of my Mum's anyway.....)

My omega constellation is 11 years old and pristine - I wear it daily and it's been through more with me than my DH

I have a Tag Aquaracer like this but with a blue face - seems the blue mother of pearl ones now don't have diamonds on the face these days. Mine's had nearly 14 years of daily wear and looks as good as new. I have had it serviced once and replaced the battery as and when it needed it so it has cost a bit to maintain but I love it and will never have another watch.

DH has an Omega Seamaster which I have to service for him secretly because he faints at the cost. Last time I had it done the chap at the watch shop told me Tudor are very good when it comes to servicing costs so if that's an issue it might be worth looking at those.

I love my Tag though, can't recommend it enough.

If you can I would buy a used ladies Rolex if you have the budget. Personally I don't care about resale value as I would never get rid of my watches unless I really had to. My budget doesn't stretch to the Rolex I would love unfortunately, but maybe some day!

I have this Omega Constellation which is my favourite, never seen anyone else wearing the same combo of rose gold, steel, dark brown face and diamonds. It's 5 years old and I have to be honest the bracelet on my other watch (Tag Carrera, pictured) has worn better and this watch is 9 years old. The bracelet on the Omega definitely has more light scratches on. I have also had to have the entire hand mechanism replaced on the Omega - luckily it was just within warranty or it would have cost £900.

Lucky you, just get whatever you like. I would say don't put it away in a box 'for best'. Make sure it's adequately insured and wear it and get pleasure out of wearing it!

I've just looked at the prices of new Rolex watches. I'm quite surprised to see that the watch I bought 12 years ago is now more than triple the price I paid for it.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 09/06/2022 17:42

If you want a classic rolex that holds value, you will struggle to get one from a shop these days, generally if they are available in a shop you are looking at the models with no particular demand, ergo they won’t appreciate in price or hold as much value.. As for Tag, if you are going to keep it then go for it, not going to hold value though.

Rado make some lovely watches.

MIL has a Patek Philippe. I had no idea it was worth much until I googled after reading these posts.

If I become a millionaire I am buying one of those.

AdoraBell · 09/06/2022 18:19

I like Omega Constellation, I have one with a mother of Pearl face but I want the newish one with the dark blue sparkly face.

Could you get to a jewellery shop and try some on?

SkiingIsHeaven · 09/06/2022 18:20

Love my Breitling Superocean.

I like Rolex, but really, as they are really just jewellery it’s really down to what you like the look of.

I’ve bought a few down the years, and they are all worth significantly more than they cost. The most recent one doubled in value pretty much immediately.

blue421 · 09/06/2022 18:22

I have an Omega Seamaster and I love it. I bought one as an anniversary present for my husband and he wears a £5 digital watch my brother gave him for Christmas. Which isn't annoying at all. Mine isn't scratched at all and looks pretty pristine.

I also have a Tag but I'm not so keen on it as it's two tone.

Three “really” in one line. Very poor.

blue421 · 09/06/2022 18:24

Are you sure it's not really poor.....? (I also notice my overuse of certain words the moment after I press post!).

cherrypiepie · 09/06/2022 18:33

I have a tag aquaracer and love it. I bought it from the Caribbean so it was cheaper.

Tag are the cheapest of Luxury watch brands and the man on the cruise ship told me because of the movement is quartz (or something about the movement) it's still Swiss made. He called it affordable luxury.

Anyway DH is a watch fiend and has a breitling (and many other active brand watches eg luminous) and is beautiful.

The battery in my tag didn't last though. They replaced it free of charge as is died before 12 months. But now it's going less than two years later (has end of life indicator)

Love my aqua racer and am saving a for another.

I have an ancient Rolex Datejust which I wear every day. It’s made of stainless steel and is the opposite of flash, but I still love it and it has held its value well. DP has a beautiful steel Rolex GMT Master ‘Batman’ which is now worth more than twice what he paid for it. There are currently massive waitlists for new Rolexes because demand outstrips supply. Tudor, a brand which is owned by the same company as Rolex is an excellent, affordable, obtainable alternative.

Have a browse around this site to see what’s available for what budget in the world of luxury watches.
www.watchfinder.co.uk/

Then head down to your local branch of Goldsmiths or Watches of Switzerland and try a few on.

cowsaysmoo · 09/06/2022 18:45

I've got Longiness that looks like one of the Rolex Datejust l, I love it and it doesn't have the horrendous price tag.

Yodaisawally · 09/06/2022 18:50

If you've got the budget - Patek Phillipe Nautilus. I like a chunky watch and I've got fat wrists so wear a means, and I dive so it does serve a purpose.

And your chances of being able to actually purchase on of those in a shop is zero!

Gandalfsthong · 09/06/2022 19:32

I have a Cartier tank with some diamonds down each side. Have worn it everyday for years, love it, it’s hardly scratched and a thing of beauty. Highly recommend.

josil · 09/06/2022 19:59

I have two Cartier, a Rolex and a Hermes. I love wearing them because they are beautifully designed but I'd say my carrier tank gets the most wear. Rolex is great and holds value but also a bit too common and also automatic ones heavy on the wrist

Isabelle70 · 09/06/2022 20:22

I have a Tag Heuer Aquaracer, it's 7 years old and still looks good as new. I wear mine all the time apart from woodworking. I was going to get the plain bezel then decided not buying again so got the one I really wanted.

I'd go Audemars Piguet. A code 11.59 one. Absolutely stunning and it's not a brand most people would know.

justforthisnow · 09/06/2022 20:33

I have a Tag, bought 2007 and still as good as new.
I do really want a Patek Phillippe but will take a Cartier Tank in lieu. Not asking much, me!

I'd forgotten these, they are to die for.
