Big but not overly formal UK summer wedding (think marquee & converted barn; couple are quite fashionable but older boho types).

I want a dress and some flat sandals/low heels + possibly some sort of cover-up for the church and evening. But I seem to have completely lost the ability to dress up ....and I've got a week to find an outfit! I've looked online in Hobbs, Jigsaw, Reiss, Monsoon, Mango, ASOS, John Lewis, Dotty P, Roman, Closet...lost the will to live and just don't know what would look dressy enough but not too 'mother of the bride'.

I'm 45, tall, size 12, hourglass, bit of a belly.

Absolute no-nos:

  • Jumpsuits
  • Above knee dresses (preferably looking for a midi or knee length; it's awkward to find maxi dresses at my height).
  • Towering heels
  • Frills and ruffles
  • Puff sleeves

I love some of the dresses on the Cos link, I wouldn't have thought of them for dresses.

I agree with you @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie re Roman Originals. I foolishly bought two things from them which looked good online but when they arrived the fabric was horrible.

I got this dress for a wedding and it’s one of my favourite dresses ever. It’s so easy to wear. It also has a version without sleeves if you prefer that

Omg this is stunning. I want one for a wedding i have in October. I am making myself sell off three dresses first, though!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/06/2022 17:27

Love the print of this Noa Noa dress . No idea what fabric/quality or sizing might be like though.

Also love this very boho Jigsaw one but it won't be to everybody's (anybody's?) taste and will fail your sleeve test.

And this fails all of your tests but I love it!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/06/2022 17:28

I nearly linked to this in red. It's beautiful, but I think W@MillieFromMars will hate the sleeves. Also, Whistles fabrics/quality can be so poor now - would need to see/touch in the flesh.

Ladywiddio · 04/06/2022 17:33

Noa Noa is good quality, have had several things from them over the years.

Roman Originals nah.Poor quality I find.

Wyse do some great dresses that can be dressed down too after the event? Won’t fester in the wardrobe never to be worn again? www.wyselondon.com/collections/dresses/products/jemima-fruity-floral-dress-multi-navy-regular

The closet London one is lovely!, sea salt one bit frumpy (sorry) be fine for work but not a wedding.Hobbs Carly dress a good bet too.

awaynboilyurheid · 05/06/2022 09:23

Oh just saw the Amelia blue whistles dress, that’s gorgeous!
can you come back and say if you liked any of the suggestions?

@LemonPalmTree i love the look of that one, am so sad it’s sold out in my size 😭

justaweeone · 05/06/2022 09:44

I'm beginning to think that Roman must be paying MNers to advertise them. I see them mentioned loads on here, but I went into a store and thought everything was absolutely horrific.

What colours do you like, OP, and what sort of budget? Where do you usually shop?

Yep agree. Not great quality imo!

lightisnotwhite · 05/06/2022 17:17

Or cheap as chips! Plain navy to dress up.

Lovely. I'm so tempted even though no occasions to go to this year yet.

The teal or the powder blue is lovely. There are some absolute horrors suggested but the Coast dress is by far and away the nicest.

That's beautiful.

User0610134049, meant to say re Pretty Kitty, they are quite good at getting stock back in. I have bought 2 dresses from there, the one posted, & a green velvet boat neck, both originally out of stock, I clicked the notify me when back in stock. It’s worth doing that if you really want that dress.
