Big but not overly formal UK summer wedding (think marquee & converted barn; couple are quite fashionable but older boho types).

I want a dress and some flat sandals/low heels + possibly some sort of cover-up for the church and evening. But I seem to have completely lost the ability to dress up ....and I've got a week to find an outfit! I've looked online in Hobbs, Jigsaw, Reiss, Monsoon, Mango, ASOS, John Lewis, Dotty P, Roman, Closet...lost the will to live and just don't know what would look dressy enough but not too 'mother of the bride'.

I'm 45, tall, size 12, hourglass, bit of a belly.

Absolute no-nos:

  • Jumpsuits
  • Above knee dresses (preferably looking for a midi or knee length; it's awkward to find maxi dresses at my height).
  • Towering heels
  • Frills and ruffles
  • Puff sleeves

I'll have a look for you, tell me what you like or don't like.

What about this?

It comes in lots of colours and would work with sandals or pumps.

I'm not 100% sure what the quality/fit is like but a friend (mid 40s/tall) recently bought a dress to wear to a wedding from Roman Originals.

Anthropologie?

Mosaic123 · 04/06/2022 15:20

Roman Originals are of decent quality and not expensive BTW.

ronswansonstache · 04/06/2022 15:24

I'm about the same age and size as you and have bought this for a wedding later this summer

Would you consider something like this: www.jigsaw-online.com/products/rainbow-ditsy-godet-maxi-dress-multi

It fits much better in real life. The waist doesn’t hang down like it does in the picture. It comes in at the waist and the top drapes a bit over it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/06/2022 15:36

I'm beginning to think that Roman must be paying MNers to advertise them. I see them mentioned loads on here, but I went into a store and thought everything was absolutely horrific.

What colours do you like, OP, and what sort of budget? Where do you usually shop?

Yewtown · 04/06/2022 15:42

How about something like this

with some bright coloured shoes and bag.

Haha! Definitely not being paid. I've only ever been in our local store once and, like you, thought it was pretty dire!

WakeUpandSmelltheKetchup · 04/06/2022 16:00

Regarding Romans, I couldn’t agree more, there is one in a run down part of a shopping centre in my MIL’s town. The clothes seem to be of poor fabric quality, frumpy and ill cut so I don’t even bother to pop in if we are passing by. A big step down from supermarket or Next IMO.

LemonPalmTree · 04/06/2022 16:04

I got this dress for a wedding and it’s one of my favourite dresses ever. It’s so easy to wear. It also has a version without sleeves if you prefer that

Lovely. I'm so tempted even though no occasions to go to this year yet.

Fairnair · 04/06/2022 16:53

I have the same dress as LemonPalmTree, but in a different colour. Comfortable & easy to wear. Good dress which can be dressed or down.

Fairnair · 04/06/2022 16:54

Dressed up or down (should have said).

Fairnair · 04/06/2022 16:55

Have you looked at the Hobbs Carly dress. Very good quality, & again easy to wear. It is available in several colours, got mine last year in sale for £99, navy with red, coral & yellow flowers on.
