This popped up on my FB feed

Does anyone actually like being called 'middle aged'?

I'm middle-aged, doesn't bother me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have the cardinal sins of being fat and having grey hair too!

Mochudubh · 01/06/2022 08:46

No, I'm very much middle-aged but wouldn't wear that skirt..

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 01/06/2022 08:46

Good on them for not being coy about their target market

KatieKat88 · 01/06/2022 08:46

I had that too and was most aggrieved, I'm only 34!! GrinI don't see why they need to mention age at all, pointless.

PuppyMonkey · 01/06/2022 08:46

Imagine the horror.Grin

ArtVandalay · 01/06/2022 08:47

It’s not exactly good marketing is it? Didn’t really need to be said.

Anytimeiseeit · 01/06/2022 08:47

I am middle aged, no point in being in denial about it is my view

ErrolTheDragon · 01/06/2022 08:47

No, but that's because ageism is too ingrained I fear. There's nothing wrong with being neither properly old nor young.

Mochudubh · 01/06/2022 08:49

If I reach 100 without succumbing to a hankering for floral crimplene, I'll die a happy woman.

I'd never heard of them, but this description made me take a look. I was hoping it was code for 'quite a lot of our dresses have sleeves', which appears to be the case.Grin

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/06/2022 08:50

Maybe their real target market is older women, and they are using the term middle aged to sound youthful and vibrant?

Why are you equating "middle aged" with "floral crimplene"?ConfusedHmm apart from you probably have to be middle aged or more to know what it is (or was - does it even exist any more?)

Fairyliz · 01/06/2022 09:05

Better than M & S marketing which involves a six foot, size eight 20 year old model.

Just like their customers 🙄

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/06/2022 10:04

Thanks to this thread I have checked out their website and there are several dresses I would happily wear, and one I will buy. I am in my mid 40s so let's see if they can make me look amazing Grin.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 01/06/2022 10:08

Bear in mind if you order online from Roman, you have to pay to return items.
I won’t bother with them again because of this, although some of the stuff is nice and I’m probably their target market.

BiggerBoat1 · 01/06/2022 10:08

I'm middle aged. No shame in that!
Good on them for calling a spade a spade 😀

Tryhard40 · 01/06/2022 10:11

Is it for real? It seems “off” somehow and very silly to put off potential customers who don’t see themselves as middle-aged.

Weird.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/06/2022 10:11

Oh that's a shame, I won't order it then. Having never bought from them I don't know how the sizes fit, and I wouldn't chance a guess. Thanks for the heads up!

SabrePrattler · 01/06/2022 10:14

It's funny the visceral reaction so many middle-aged people have to the term 'middle age'. I'm guessing that Roman Originals demographic are okay with being categorised as such.

TitInATrance · 01/06/2022 10:15

I’m middle aged and heading rapidly towards OAP status, so it would attract me and I occasionally use ‘middle-aged’ as a search term when looking for clothes. Far too old to be coy.

DSiS (61) wears a lots of Roman and loves it. I prefer natural fibres and shopping in-person.

**I’m pretty sure exchanges are free, but returns are £3.00.

WooNoodle · 01/06/2022 10:19

They actually have some decent stuff but agree that's a weird way of putting it

Zpoa · 01/06/2022 10:27

Love some of Roman clothes. Great quality!

Dilbertian · 01/06/2022 10:30

If they're aiming at a middle age maker, then how about having a middle aged model?

KateMcCallister · 01/06/2022 10:35

I've got a couple of friends that shop from there and they're not even 30 yet, their advertising is marginalising their customers if anything.

I'd never shop there, middle aged or not 😂
