Roman Originals, what were you thinking?!

This popped up on my FB feed

Does anyone actually like being called 'middle aged'?

Roman Originals, what were you thinking?!

They sell a lot of Roman clothes online at Next . Some things are nice, some OK, some absolutely horrible. They probably have a higher percentage of polyester florals than some other companies. But then again so do Hush and Zara.

If I reach 100 without succumbing to a hankering for floral crimplene, I'll die a happy woman.

It's not crimplene, it's polyester. I think you'll find young women wear polyester florals - from Zara, H&M, Next, New Look etc - it's difficult to find much else at times.

EnglishPearFreesia · 01/06/2022 17:49

I'll answer the question. Given that we are living longer and based on familial longevity, with a GM of 90, if I am over 50, I guess I am middle aged. It is what it is.

Ribbena · 01/06/2022 18:35

I’ve just bought a dress from there thanks to this thread - never heard of them before!

Seniorandjunior · 01/06/2022 18:35

I don’t see many clothes or clothing ranging aiming to ‘make teens feel look and feel amazing again’ or ‘make middle aged men look and feel amazing again’ 🤣. Jesus wept.

It’s terrible marketing and a misogynistic slur and very ageist. Stop with the boxing people off into (misogynistic and ageist) categories.

Maireas · 01/06/2022 18:51

True, @Seniorandjunior - it's like there's an expectation that older women should feel bad about their appearance and ageing.

The advert actually doesn’t use the word “again”. I think it makes quite a difference from the way you’re looking at it

Seniorandjunior · 01/06/2022 19:01

My mistake but I don’t really think it makes much difference. My point remains - it still remains a misogynistic and ageist slur. You don’t see similar ads for other age groups and men. Don’t you see that?

I'm not yet middle aged, so am probably not the best placed to comment, but I think it looks a bit patronising, quite possibly.

I'd never heard of them, but this description made me take a look. I was hoping it was code for 'quite a lot of our dresses have sleeves', which appears to be the case.Grin

It is Grin

SpeedofaSloth · 01/06/2022 19:12

I am so middle aged that I can't actually read the text in the original advert as I haven't got my varifocals on.
I also wore a Roman dress for work today.
I like sleeves.

I don’t know really. I see on these boards daily that middle aged women often struggle with how they look, changing bodies and menopause etc. They lose confidence and often don’t feel amazing. I don’t suppose that young women and men feel like that in the same way.
I just don’t really see anything very concerning in the wording of this ad, more that it’s just trying to reach their target audience

Coffeepot72 · 01/06/2022 19:20

Not the best word to use in their marketing, even if it’s true!

Given that most people I know who shop there are over 60, I'd say they're being quite generous TBH.

I'm 42 and consider myself to be middle aged. Nothing wrong with growing old. It's a privilege too many don't get.

StellaAndCrow · 01/06/2022 20:14

I've had some nice batwing-style tops and jumpers from Roman - similar to Phase Eight but cheaper.

BUT in looking through all the links you brilliant people added on the summer dresses thread, what I know as "batwing" is apparently now "penguin-sleeved"!?!

EggRollsForever · 01/06/2022 20:48

At least they have moved on from their - what was it? "Winter "collection they were using until recently. I looked at this askance as it is not good marketing . I think they will put off some people who may have considered them. I googled middle aged and it said 40 -60 so at least I'm not middle aged. I am old 😂
