What do I wear under a short dress?

I’m a large woman, size 22. I’ve bought a gorgeous dress to wear for a summer wedding, the issue is, it’s short. Too short for me to feel comfortable with nothing underneath. But I’m hopelessly unfashionable. What should I wear underneath? Are tan tights a faux pas? I don’t want to wear dark tights. Leggings definitely wouldn’t look right under the dress. What do I do?

shorts then fake tan legs?

Suzi9989 · 23/05/2022 21:53

I'd say look for a longer dress. There are a lot of options out there. Enjoy yourself and be comfortable 💃

Cupcakegirl13 · 23/05/2022 21:58

Snag tights do great shorts to go under dresses I hate the phrase but they call them ‘chub rub’ shorts.

McConkeysPlate · 23/05/2022 22:00

Snag Chub Rubs

HeddaGarbled · 23/05/2022 22:04

’Barely there’ tights.

I basically wear little cycling/running shorts under everything, always have done. Always been paranoid about flashing underwear and this way I don't need to worry about that at all but can still wear as short as I fancy. I have two pairs of Nike/Adidas tiny tight cycling shorts for if I don't want them to show, a blue pair and a black pair. Both cheap-ish from Sports Direct. And a longer pair of cheapy black cycling shorts from George at Asda for if I do want them to show as part of the 'look'/ or don't care if they show or not.

hoomaeyya · 23/05/2022 22:11

I wear black cycling shorts under my shorter dresses.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 23/05/2022 22:14

Chub rub shorts. I'd go balls to the wall and get them in a bright colour. Much better than flesh coloured tights.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 23/05/2022 22:16

Shorts in a range of colours

Sharrowgirl · 23/05/2022 22:25

What colour is the dress and your shoes?

DontYouLeaveMe · 23/05/2022 22:31

😂 @GregBrawlsInDogJail i like your style!

@Sharrowgirl its a blue dress and I don’t have shoes yet but I’m thinking neutral?

I don’t want to change the dress, it’s pretty and I feel nice in it (which takes a lot!)

Surely not chub rub shorts if the dress is short?

Tights or bare legs OP

DeadButDelicious · 23/05/2022 22:34

I wear black cycling shorts under my dresses in the summer to avoid chafing and accidental underwear flashing. I hear good things about the snag shorts but I have had no need to purchase them just yet, they come in loads of colors so you should easily find a match.

NashvilleQueen · 23/05/2022 22:39

Please don't change the dress. Us larger women spend too much time buried under fabric.

Is it your legs yours worried about (ie too pale etc) or being uncomfortable? Depending on the colour and print you could go fairly radical if you're up for it

WouldBeGood · 23/05/2022 22:42

I’m in my fifties so would fake tan, as I’m blue white, and go barely there tights over the top.

If you have a nicer skin tone than I do/are young then bare legs, fake tan if you need it to smooth out any imperfections.

And knickers, in case it’s windy 😃

DatingIsDifficult · 23/05/2022 22:45

What about coloured three quarter leggings?

PurpleDaisies · 23/05/2022 22:46

I would just wear shorts style knickers in a neutral colour.

MarmiteCoriander · 23/05/2022 22:51

Have you checked that you can bend over and sit comfortably without things being on show? If its that short- is it really suitable for a wedding?

Is it your legs or underwear being on show you are worried about? I'd likely wear skin toned tights (or toeless tights if wearing strappy heels) and possibly short boxer style underwear or spanxs type pants.

DontYouLeaveMe · 24/05/2022 06:51

Sorry I should have said, yes it’s my legs I’m worried about. They’re very pale and fat knees. I can bend over and sit, it’s not that short, I just don’t feel like I’ve got nice enough legs.

Bit of fake tan will do wonders for your legs. Get one that builds gradually so you can control the colour.

If not your thing, then barely there nude tights.

WouldBeGood · 24/05/2022 07:36

The garnier gradual tan or st tropez gradual tan are both really good, and won’t make you orange.

i like the st tropez one as you can see where you’re putting it, then it develops nicely and doesn’t flake off. Moisturise with a bit of slightly shimmery moisturiser too, flattering.

if You go get tights make sure they’re not shiny as I always panic my legs look sausagey in them 😳

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 26/05/2022 09:16

Nude tights, get thin ones not shiny but not the cheap matt ones. You can get ones that have a small amount of shimmer like you have put body lotion on. They will make your legs look smoother, more even coloured and tanned. If you buy the right ones they have some sculpting properties too so will give you a smoother trimmer bum and tum.

Have a look around for good ones that are a suitable tone. M&S or John Lewis should have a decent range.

People will tell you they are out of fashion but they mean obvious looking tan tights. In fact loads of pictures you see of famous women with apparently bare legs they are wearing tights, Kate Middleton is almost always wearing tights at public appearances.

Either you feel you look nice in it or you don’t
If you are going to be pulling it down or stressing about your knees looking fat then maybe look for an alternative?
I have seen larger ladies look fab due to confidence and slimmer ones look awful due to lack of. If you don’t feel you can wear it don’t but bear in mind it’s doubtful anyone will be judging your pale skin and knees as much as you will.

Suprima · 26/05/2022 09:22

Fake tan and high high heels to give you some lift and make you feel more shapely.

What about coloured three quarter leggings?

Please don't do this, not for a wedding!

We'll, not for any occasion but especially a wedding
