What is the most ridiculous thing you have worn and in which decade?

I'm torn between the orange poncho c1975 or the 'snow-washed' denim jacket c1984.

Probably the latter as that was my choice, the former was chosen by some evil hag my mother.

In the seventies-Bright green polyester trouser suit (my mum was responsible for this horror).

In the eighties-too many crimes against style to list all but remember-mint green striped pedal pushers worn with matching stiletos and 'blouson' jacket,
frilly 'New Romantic' style shirt with velvet three quarter length trousers,
puffball skirt with black Doc Martin's shoes.

MamaG · 12/01/2008 17:56

a snood in the 80s

littleboo · 12/01/2008 17:56

Puffball skirt

bookwormmum · 12/01/2008 17:57

My animal jumpers combined with a pineapple updo (think Pebbles from the Flintstones) plus the ubiqitous puffball skirt circa 1987.

What was I thinking? .

bookwormmum · 12/01/2008 17:58

Oh yes, a snood and fingerless gloves .

Orange teamed with a purple coat in my case.

JingleyJen · 12/01/2008 17:58

In the mid 1980's I had a knitted skirt and jumper in the pattern of a persian rug coloured bright yellow and electric blue I wore it with bright yellow tights and electric blue pixi boots ..

sadly there is photographic evidence of this with my spiral perm on the shelf in my M&D's family room.

I'd forgotten about the electric blue boot thing. Oh dear, it's all coming back now.

Batwing jumper anyone?

littleboo · 12/01/2008 18:03

OOOH I had a hideous jumper with scotish terriers on with little tartan bows attached,..... now that is bad!

JingleyJen · 12/01/2008 18:04

OOhh I made my granny knit me a batwing jumper - had totally forgotten about them!

MAMAZON · 12/01/2008 18:05

in my teens i used to wear flowery M&S skirts with "bovva" boots.

at the time i thought i looked sooo cool.

looking back i looked like i had robbed a tramp

BrownSuga · 12/01/2008 18:11

In the early 90's I had a rather stunning multi coloured fluoro long sweater that I wore with black stirrup pants. Nice. Then there are the woollen multi green cullottes (sp?) in the 80s that my mother used to make me wear. I was so happy when the puppy chewed a hole in them...... but alas mother had them fixed. Then there were the dresses with the massive square lace collars and drop waists.

I have too many bad clothes memories from my childhood, I'm now a very tailored and simple or jeans & shirt wearer.

JingleyJen · 12/01/2008 18:13

BrownSuga it is funny to think about Stirrup pants they were banned along with leggings at our school in 1986 because they clung to the flesh too much.

1980s - about fifteen or sixteen?

Huge man's coat from Oxfam, gold pyjama top also from a chairty shop, weird green and yellow checked cullottes, and a wooly hat and Doc Martens.

I mean why? How 'individual' does a 15 y-o need to be?

twelveyeargap · 12/01/2008 18:22

A pair of these in baby blue, with hotpants. (I was skinny back then.)

I was on my way to a rave sometime in the nineties. I LOVED those boots.

twelveyeargap · 12/01/2008 18:24

Ooh and circa 1990, I went through a stage of wearing a tail coat. I can't remember why.

ahundredtimes · 12/01/2008 18:24

Oh actually I've just remembered a black velvet hotpant sort of all in one thing I bought once, when I was old enough to know better. God that was ridiculous.

ahundredtimes · 12/01/2008 18:24

[swoons at tailcoat]

Maidamess · 12/01/2008 18:25

I was a 'Rockabilly'.

My interpretation of this was to buy a bright yellow stretch ankle length pencil skirt. Baggy yellow shirt.

And I dyed a pair of teddy boy shoes yellow to complete the ensemble.

THE SHAME

whichwitch · 12/01/2008 18:26

Owning up to Hot Pants - can remember two pairs - one of which was orange - must have been late70's (so possibly out of fashion!!!!)and my excuse is I was very young

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 12/01/2008 18:30

You all look absurd.

I never owned a shirt with a big v-shape of tiny pleats down the front, no, not me. Nor a pair of black jacquard trousers. Certainly not, no.

One of my proudest possessions about 13 or 14 was a second-hand soft leather riding jacket. I wore it day and night . Teamed with deliberately mis-matched socks (black with pink or red and blue).

I can do the mis-match sock thing now without even trying .
