Just that really

@mynameiscalypso

I am only reading up on Shein now, as a result of this thread. The packaging was all that stood out for me, but was significant enough. I don't research every company before I purchase from them.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/05/2022 15:32

Lands' End are good for swimwear with shorts and skirts. Much more expensive than Shein obviously but reliably good quality. If you sign up to get their emails and then wait they have regular discount days so you will be able to buy full price items with 40-60% off.

obsessedwithsleep · 15/05/2022 15:34

Shein is the absolute pits ethically and environmentally. Please don't shop there.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 15/05/2022 15:34

Fits short, flimsy quality- think t shirt fabric for sweater, difficult returns. Shipping i think was from China? I won't bother again.

Snowraingain · 15/05/2022 15:36

No it’s awful. Poor quality. Dreadful for the climate and random strange fabric. Just dreadful. I’ve banned my teenagers from using it.

ReviewingTheSituation · 15/05/2022 15:47

It's as unethical as they come. There's the child labour for one thing, and then almost all artificial fibre materials, which are terrible environmentally.

ReviewingTheSituation · 15/05/2022 15:49

I hadn't seen the article linked above, but the line "most returns end up in landfill because it's cheaper than putting them back into circulation" is pretty sobering.

Notanotherwindow · 15/05/2022 15:55

Hit and miss. I've got loads of nice stuff from there but go by the measurements, not the sizes themselves and check reviews for fabric quality.

There are a couple of little drop down bits that tell you the exact measurements and what they're made from so use those and you won't go far wrong. Very easy to return stuff.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 15/05/2022 15:55

Check out the video posted by Justine Leconte regarding their - lack of - ethical credentials.

They "drop" something like the same number of new lines the likes of Zara do in 4 months in one month. Literally the opposite of sustainable fashion.

I get times are hard and we're all watching the pennies but I really wish there were better alternatives than Shein.

If you really still must buy them check out Vinted which is awash with the stuff and that gif awful Oh Polly label. Only worn once apparently Confused

TokyoTen · 15/05/2022 16:04

I ordered a red dress - cheap quality fabric, it wasn't at all as the pic showed (it was straight up and down, pic showed fitted). I wouldn't order from there again personally as I felt the pic was deceptive.

thinking of a swimsuit. free returns though

I couldn't recommend their swimsuits enough, and I usually struggle to get some to fit me properly. Just read the reviews and you will be fine.

daviesbrownsmithgreen · 15/05/2022 16:10

I've ordered from them before and never had an issue but I try to do some research on the product before I buy e.g. look at photos uploaded in the reviews section, look at what material the product is made out of etc.

However, I've recently stopped buying from there and I will never buy from them again. The fashion industry as a whole is extremely damaging to the environment but some businesses are significantly worse than others. All these fast-fashion businesses- Shein, Missguided, PLT, Boohoo and even Zara are making deliberate choices that they know is dangerous to the environment. I'm trying to make much better choices when it comes to fashion and stopping from buying these businesses is one of the first steps to that.

isthisit83 · 15/05/2022 16:31

I recently ordered 3 swimsuits from them and I was really happy with them. I had never heard of them but they came up on google when I was searching for modest swimsuits. There was really not a lot available from other retailers that covered my shoulders and zipped up to my neck. Not sure if I'd buy from them again just due to ethical issues pointed out.

FourChimneys · 15/05/2022 16:39

They are the epitome of fast, unethical and environmentally unfriendly clothing.

I can't imagine feeling comfortable wearing anything from them knowing that.

Gottoomuchgoingon · 15/05/2022 17:29

I've ordered lots for DD10 and a few bits for me. Read the description carefully and look at the photo to see if it could look shit.
I've never had a complaint with it.

Some stuff looks trashy in the photos so start by avoiding that

orchidsunrise · 15/05/2022 17:41

I read an article the other day about how shein is one of the worst companies globally for ethical fashion. They've grown faster than Amazon apparently and allegedly anything that is returned just goes into landfill.

The luxury of caring about ethics is beyond my pay grade unfortunately!
I'll leave that to the great and brilliant wealthy citizens.

Unless you mean you use shein to literally buy the basics so you don’t have to go naked, then just don’t buy as many clothes. New clothes and fashion items are a luxury. You looking cool on a budget is not more important than child labour.

1Week · 15/05/2022 21:30

What's ethical then? Because I've no reason to doubt that some of the more expensive brands produce in exactly the same way but charge big and pocket the difference

MumUndone · 15/05/2022 21:35

Please don't buy from this sweatshop using, planet destroying company ☹️

Divebar2021 · 15/05/2022 21:36

Any minute now someone’s going to say “do you drive a car and eat meat”. We’re going to hell in a handcart and we’re going to be doing in dressed in shitty, fast fashion

Mischance · 15/05/2022 21:37

Google reviews of Shein. They say it all.

ginslinger · 15/05/2022 21:38

they use child labour and have no regard for the environment -
